TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: BLUES AT SABRES

Stat of the Night: The Blues have outshot their opponents in 8 consecutive games including a season-high 47 shots (including 37 over the final 2 periods) and 85 attempts (22 blocked, 16 missed) last time out vs. WSH. It was their highest shot total since they logged 49 on Jan. 14, 2012 vs. Minnesota and the 15th time overall they have recorded over 45 in a game since 2000-01. Dating back to the 2nd per. of a 2-1 win over PIT on Nov. 9, the Blues have posted 9 or more shots in 14 straight periods while holding their opponent to 9 or fewer in 12 of those frames. Overall, the Blues have held their opponents under 25 shots in each of their last 6 games including 20 or fewer in 5 of those outings. In November, the Blues have accrued a +85 shot differential which is 16 clear of 2nd place, VAN. That mark has translated into a 6-2-1 record thus far. League-wide, they share 7th in shots per game (31.3) and 3rd in shots allowed per game (25.1).

Recent Series…The Blues have won back-to-back games vs. the Sabres including a 4-2 win in their last meeting on Jan. 21, 2012. Dating back to 1999, the Blues are 12-2-0 including 7-1-0 on the road. Their winning percentage (.857) since then is their best against any NHL team. An additional trend is that the Blues have scored at least 3 goals in each of their last 8 contests Beast vs. the East…The Blues are a league-best 30-9-5 in inter-conference play since 2010-11. Their +42 goal differential since then is 13 better than other team from the West. This season, they are 6-2-0 including outscoring the opposition 27-16 Get Backes…David Backes posted 1 of his 3 career 4-pt games vs. BUF in their last meeting. Backes added a +3 rating in that game, joining him with Pavol Demitra and Doug Weight as the only Blues with two 4-pt/+3 games since 2000. After 4 PIM last time out vs. WSH, Backes sits with 699 for his career, 1 minor shy of becoming the 12th Blue in club history to reach the 700 PIM plateau. Overall, Backes would become the 26th NHL player to serve as much time since entering the league in 2006-07. He would also join ANA’s and PHI’s Scott Hartnell as the only players with at least 700 PIM and 300 points Strong Goaltending…Jaroslav Halak has won back-to-back games vs. the Sabres (1 shutout) including stopping 48 of 50 shots he’s faced in that span. Brian Elliott has faced BUF 11 times in his career, earning at least a point in each outing. His 9-0-2 record and .940 sv% over his career (since Feb. 7, 2009) are tops among all goalies while his 1.81 GAA is 2nd only to NJ’s Martin Brodeur (at least 10 starts) Milestone…Barret Jackman will appear in his 663rd game as a Blue tonight, passing Garry Unger for 4th on the franchise list. He is now looking up at Brett Hull, who sits in the 3rd slot with 744
