Arsenal, top of the table with 22 points, have only lost one league match this season, on the opening day against Aston Villa, but have been beaten by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and Chelsea in the League Cup in the past week. The visit of Liverpool (1730GMT), on 20 points, is only the second time they have met a team with realistic top-four ambitions following a win over local rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Manager Arsene Wenger fielded a weakened side against Chelsea and he said it was important not to read too much into recent results. “Let’s not jump too quickly to conclusions because if you take the points we have made since the first of January, we have made more than anyone else,” he told reporters after the 2-0 home loss to Chelsea. “I believe that a longer distance reveals more about the quality of a team than the last few games. It is difficult to swallow that happened to us in the last week, but the mistakes are not so big that it cannot be corrected.” He acknowledged, however, that it was vital to get back on track against Liverpool, for whom Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge scored all the goals in last week’s 4-1 thrashing of West Brom, especially NEWCASTLE: Newcastle United’s English defender Mike Williamson (right) vies with Manchester City’s Montenegrin striker with tough games against champions Manchester United and sur- Steven Jovetic during the English League Cup fourth round football match between Newcastle United and Manchester City at prise packages Southampton to follow. “It’s a difficult (run), but that’s St James’ Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. — AFP part of the season. • Football Agents in the Biggest Five European Football Markets an Empirical Research Report
FOOTBALL AGENTS IN THE BIGGEST FIVE EUROPEAN FOOTBALL MARKETS AN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH REPORT FEBRUARY 2012 Raffaele Poli, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Giambattista Rossi, João Havelange Scholarship, Birkbeck University (London) With the collaboration of Roger Besson, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Football agent portrayed by the Ivorian woodcarver Bienwélé Coulibaly Executive summary While intermediaries acting in the transfers of footballers have existed since almost the birth of the professional game, the profession of agent was not officially recognised until 1991 when FIFA established the first official licensing system. In November 2011, there were 6,082 licensed agents worldwide: 41% of them were domiciled within countries hosting the big five European leagues: England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France. This research project firstly investigates shares in the representation market of players in the five major European championships. By presenting the results of a survey questionnaire, it analyses the socio-demographic profile of licensed football agents in the above mentioned countries, the business structure of their activity, the different kinds of services provided, and the way in which they are performed from a relational point of view (network approach). The analysis of shares highlights that the big five league players’ representation market is highly concentrated: half of the footballers are managed by 83 football agents or agencies. Our study reveals the existence of closed relational networks that clearly favors the concentration of players under the control of few agents. Footballers are not equally distributed between intermediaries. Conversely, dominant actors exist alongside dominated agents. One fifth of the agents having answered to our questionnaire manage the career of half of the players represented on the whole.

Brother of Italy, Italy woke up... These are the first words of the Italian National Anthem. One country, 4 world cups numerous friends and enemies. But one thing the nobody can deny is the masterclass of Italian Coaches. Excellent in tactics, always extremely well prepared team and above all intelligence and flexibility. The last representative of the big Italian Coaching School is Claudio Cesare Prandelli. An ex player of Juventus, he played under the guidance of legendary Giovanni Trapattoni, winning recognition and trophies. A real fighter, despite he lost his wife in 2007 he continues to have the same desire and ambition for the game. Born in Orzinuovi in 19.8.1957 he was always the most hard working player in every club that he played. Outside of the pitch he is always smiley and humble. The Italian football federation after two failed choices trusted him till 2014. The immature experiments of Donadoni and the old time classic stubbornness of Lippi are over. Cesare keeps his nose down, he is not selling magic ideas and he is trusting a standard squad. He gives always chances to in-form players but he keeps on mind that Squadra Azzura represents whole nation so he needs to be serious and concentrated on what he does. He never speaks for the past and he rarely comments or compares opponents.

  • Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players
Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players by Mohammad-Amin Nabavi A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2019 Mohammad-Amin Nabavi ABSTRACT This thesis examines the use of neural network modelling and ordinal logistic regression on a single season of data (2015-16) to score or rank soccer players. These scores and ranks are then compared with ones from FIFA EASports that are based on a much more extensive data set that includes more variables as well as historical data. Using repeated measures one-way ANOVA and subsequent multiple comparison testing, we conclude that a neural network model with ten nodes in one hidden layer is able to generate scores statistically similar to FIFA EASports, while ordinal logistic regression cannot. We confirm this result be also examining the ranks obtained by both the neural network model and the ordinal logistic regression model. Spearman rank correlations are also examined and confirm that a neural network with 10 nodes in one hidden layer also generates ranks statistically similar to FIFA EASports. We also demonstrate the use of association rule mining on one team’s data from the 2015-16 season to identify players and combinations thereof that are associated with winning (or not winning) a match. Analyses are based on data from the Italian Serie A League 2015-2016 season. ii Acknowledgements These past couple of years have proven to be the hardest period of my life so far.
