Trieste, 24th September 2015 – 11 regattas in ten days, over one hundred events on land, an important cultural programme in association with the city theatres and museums and the introduction of FuoriRegata, an event aimed to promote all sea sports. This is what Barcolana 2015 will be. The event will be even greater this year: its length has been doubled, more events will take place in the first week of October, and the Barcolana Village will be even bigger, reaching the Porto Vecchio (the Old Port). In addition, many sport events will be organized, so creating a bond between sailing and other sea sports and a rich cultural programme will be developed, destined to become even more important in the next editions.

“A great team work – states Mitja Gialuz, Chairman of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano – with the collaboration of institutions, sponsors and local sport associations has allowed us to reach the goal we had set ourselves: turning the Barcolana into an even higher quality event. So, this year Barcolana will last ten days, it will focus on sailing, without neglecting other sports and initiatives, and will be aimed to entertain spectators and promote, beside sailing, our region and every sea sport. Barcolana should be conceived as a container of events, with sailing being its core event, bringing a cheerful atmosphere and many attractions and initiatives to the city.”

Barcolana will start on Friday 2nd October this year, with the inauguration of a series of exhibitions and an opening concert performed by Remo Anzovino, who is considered one of the most important and innovative national musicians by both reviewers and the public. The concert will take place on the “Ursus” pontoon, thanks to the collaboration of the Guardia Costiera Ausiliaria (Auxiliary Coast Guard). Barcolana will then continue until 11th October, when the 47th Autumn Cup Regatta will be raced. About two thousand boats are awaited at the start line, with over 20 thousand sailors on board. After the good result of the 2014 edition, when 16% more competitors than 2013 entered the regatta, the Barcolana organizers have worked hard this year and have invested resources to achieve even better results.

As far as sailing is concerned, this Barcolana edition will be characterized by the return of important athletes, such as Paul Cayard – who will helm AnyWave – and Vasco Vascotto – who will be on board Robertissima III. Furthermore, there will be no expected winners, as the boat Esimit Europa 2, which took part in all the last five editions, will not line up at the start line. The challenge for the absolute victory is definitely open! Other competitors will be Alberto Bolzan, an ocean sailor from Romans d’Isonzo, a little town in , who will helm the 70-foot boat “Tempus Fugit” together with other local athletes, and the boat Maxi Jena, with Furio Benussi and Mitja Kosmina on board. Some athletes will be guests of the event too. Among them there will be the French ocean sailor Isabelle Joske, who has been chosen by Generali – Barcolana’s Main Sponsor – as an ambassador of sailing in France and the Italian actress Marianna De Micheli, who left months ago from Genoa to sail toward Trieste together with her cat.

Besides Generali – which will be once again the main sponsor of the event – also illycaffè will be one of the great partners of this edition. The company has realized the Barcolana poster thanks to the collaboration

with the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto and will support the new “Barcolana Chef“ regatta. After the success of the 2014 edition, Land Rover will again sponsor the Extreme40 regatta. Land Rover Extreme 40@Barcolana will offer for the second time in Trieste the chance to enjoy the performances of 40-foot acrobatic catamarans. Four crews will challenge each other in the Bacino San Giusto. They will also race on Sunday, when the Barcolana regatta will be starting, livening up the Rive and entertaining with great performances the spectators waiting for the competitors’ arrival at the mooring.

Among the important innovations introduced this year there is a great promotion of the event nationally. Rai Radio2 will be the Barcolana official radio and will broadcast its programmes from the Barcolana Village on Sunday 11th October. Linea Blu, the Italian TV programme hosted by Donatella Bianchi, which is broadcast every Saturday afternoon on Rai Uno, will be entirely focused on the Barcolana on Saturday 10th October. The programme will be broadcast live from Trieste for a hour and a half from a stage in front of the Scala Reale, thanks to a high-level production. The Friuli Venezia Giulia division of Rai will support the event too, offering a live broadcast of the regatta on Sunday 11th October, as well as numerous updates from the Barcolana Village in the days preceding the regatta. “We have achieved a very important goal. – explains Mitja Gialuz, Chairman of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano – We have improved the promotion of the Barcolana, addressing a significantly larger audience than in previous years. The collaboration with Rai will allow the Barcolana to enlarge its horizons, so promoting both the event and the region. Also the local newspaper “” will be one of the media partners of the event, contributing to telling the great collective Barcolana story together with the regatta organizers”.

BARCOLANA APP – Barcolana has become a smart event this year and will be closer to its public thanks to the most modern communication systems. The collaboration with Unicredit has led to the realization of Barcolana Charter, a project aimed to launch the “Bluewago” start-up. The initiative has been launched in June to offer sailors the chance to hire boats or places on board a boat. This collaboration has also led to the development and release of the Barcolana App, which has been realized by Ikon for IOS and Android and will soon be available on their respective stores. “The App is a very innovative instrument for us – says Mitja Gialuz – it is the first release of a three- year project, which will allow spectators and sailing enthusiasts to live all the Barcolana events from their mobile devices. In this first phase of the project we focused on the calendar of the event. By downloading the App on their mobile devices, users will be able to receive up-to-date information about the Barcolana events taking place in the city, about their locations and their starting and ending times. In addition, they will receive reminders about any event via push notifications. A smart way of living the Barcolana, which allows spectators to be always up-to-date and not to miss any event”. The App includes another amusing function, thanks to which users can edit their photos by choosing one of the Barcolana wallpapers and post them directly on their social networks or send them via email. Among the partners of the event will be Tim Music, which will create a playlist for the event on its platform and bring famous deejays in Trieste on the occasion of the Barcolana concerts.

BARCOLANA 47 AT SEA: 11 REGATTAS IN 10 DAYS YOUNG, FUN, CHALLENGE, EXTREME 40@BARCOLANA, CLASSIC, TRI-ESTE AND JOTUN CUP HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED BARCOLANA CHEF AND GO TO BARCOLANA HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED AUTUMN CUP: NEW STARTING TIME AT 10:30 ON 11TH OCTOBER THE COURSE HAS NOT CHANGED. FINISH LINE OFF PIAZZA UNITÀ D’ITALIA

Never without a regatta. Every day, from 2nd to 11th October, there will be a chance to race a regatta, and not only in Trieste. The first Go To Barcolana sailing rally will start in Split. Thanks to the collaboration between Croatian sailing clubs and marinas, a sailing rally will accompany in complete safety yachts from Split, Rijeka and Izola to Trieste to compete in the Barcolana regatta. Shipowners from Split will leave in the first weekend of October. They will have the right to moor for free in any of the ACI Marinas along their route. Then boats from Rijeka and other Croatian harbours will join them and on Saturday 10th October boats from Izola will join the rally too, in order to reach Trieste in time for the Barcolana.

THE FIRST WEEKEND OF OCTOBER – The most appreciated regattas of the Barcolana have been confirmed. In the first weekend of October the Optimist class will compete in the Barcolana Young, which will again be the last stage of the Kinder sailing circuit. In the same days kitesurfers and windsurfers will compete in the Barcolana Fun. Thanks to the support of new sponsors (040 Group and quiconviene.com) many innovations have been introduced in this event, such as the downwind regatta for windsurfers and kitesurfers, with a course stretching from the Molo Audace to the . The traditional jumping contest between kitesurfers will once again entertain spectators in the Bacino San Giusto, with the special participation of the Cape Verdean athletes. The wakeboarding competition at the Ponterosso has been enhanced too. Athletes of the discipline will indeed have the chance to perform their jumps from an amazing springboard.

MONDAY 5TH OCTOBER: A NEW EVENT – On Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th October a new event will take place, which was conceived by Emanuele Scarello, one of the most famous cooks in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Scarello has involved ten Michelin-starred chefs in the initiative, which is aimed to promote Friuli Venezia Giulia and its traditional products. Illycaffè and Pasta Zara have joined the initiative. First, the chefs will sail on board ten one-design class boats, then they will challenge each other in illycaffè kitchens. Only one ranking will be drawn up at the end of the competition. After Barcolana Chef – this will be the name of this new challenge taking place between buoys and kitchens – a multimedia recipe book will be created by the chefs, containing recipes which can be realized with the products usually stored in a boat’s galley.

EXTREME 40 @BARCOLANA – After the evolutions of windsurfers, kitesurfers and wakeboarders and the challenges of young sailors and chefs, it will be the professionals’ turn. Land Rover Extreme 40 @Barcolana is back in Trieste. After the Istanbul stage of the Extreme 40 circuit, the catamarans will compete in Trieste before leaving for Australia. From Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th October, professionals of the circuit will challenge each other in a series of regattas in the Bacino San Giusto, not far from land, thanks to the collaboration of Samer & Co. Shipping. This year for the first time the final regatta will be raced on Sunday 11th October in front of the dam in Porto Vecchio while the Autumn Cup will be starting in the . So, spectators waiting for the Autumn Cup winners on the Rive will be able to enjoy a great show of acrobatic sailing.

FRIDAY 9TH AND SATURDAY 10TH OCTOBER: FIVE UNMISSABLE CHALLENGES – The long weekend starting on Friday 9th October will be characterized by a number of regattas and great shows for spectators on land. On 9th October, the second edition of Barcolana Challenge will take place, the regatta raced by the last edition category winners, who will compete on board Este24 one-design class boats. As the regatta is raced on an equal footing, the crews will be the only protagonists of the challenge. Yachts’ dimensions and any other factor will not count anymore. The 2014 category winners will challenge each other in three different races, including a regatta by night in the Bacino San Giusto. Here, on the same day, the crews of the 2.4 paralympic class and the shipowners of the different divisions of the Italian Navy League will challenge each other too. Saturday 10th October will be a day full of events. The Este 24 circuit will arrive in Trieste for the final stage of the 2015 season. Yachts will compete in two buoy races and a regatta by night in the Bacino San Giusto for the second edition of Barcolana Tri-Este. Also yachts belonging to the Meteor class, one of the most numerous classes in the Barcolana, will compete in a regatta by night. In the morning the Barcolana Classic – the challenge among classic yachts – will take place. Later, after sunset, spectators will support the Ufo28 boats during the intense Barcolana Jotun Cup competition taking place along the Molo Audace.

SUNDAY 11TH OCTOBER, THE BARCOLANA REGATTA – The course of the last edition has been confirmed. The finish line will be just off Piazza Unità d’Italia, as was scheduled for the 2014 edition, when however the regatta had to be reduced due to light wind conditions. An innovation has been introduced this year as far as the starting time is concerned. The 2015 Barcolana regatta will start in the usual 1.8 mile long stretch of sea between Barcola and Miramare on 11th October at 10.30 a.m. (instead of 10 a.m., as in previous editions). This decision was made after taking into account the weather conditions. In case of a dead calm sea, a delayed starting time grants more time for the wind to begin to blow before the start of the regatta, so that yachts won’t have to wait too long at the start line. On the other hand, in case of a strong bora wind, it is more likely for the wind to calm down before the start.

BARCOLANA BECOMES EVEN BIGGER ON LAND: THE VILLAGE REACHES MOLO IV, NEW LOGISTICS AND NEW EVENTS

BARCOLANA DELLE IDEE: THE CULTURAL PROJECT OF THE EVENT WILL START

CHILDREN’S AREA: OVER 1,600 SQ.M. COVERED WITH INFLATABLE GAMES AND THE CHANCE TO PRACTICE MANY DIFFERENT SPORTS

PORTO VECCHIO: THANKS TO THE BARCOLANA TRAIN, THE EVENT WILL BE CONNECTED WITH THE HYDRODYNAMIC PLANT

This edition of the Barcolana will definitely be larger in terms of size and number of event on land. This will be a growth both in dimensions and in the number of events. The Barcolana Village will stretch as far as Molo IV and will be connected with Molo Zero and the Hydrodynamic Plant through a train made available by the Port Authority in the Porto Vecchio. There will be a great number of events and initiatives, thanks to the work of both the Barcolana organizers and the partner FuoriRegata.

“The growth of Barcolana on land – explains Mitja Gialuz, Chairman of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano – will involve the areas of Molo IV and the Porto Vecchio and is aimed to entertain spectators and offer them cultural initiatives. In the first two weeks of October, Barcolana draws the attention of hundreds of thousands of people and of numerous mass media all over the world. This year we will work on a cultural programme focusing – besides sports – on sea economy, maritime culture and traditions. We don’t want to create an event just for professionals and experts. On the contrary, we want to be popular and to address an increasingly large audience. So, our motto is popularization. Last year we started to make our event popular through a documentary produced in association with the videomaker Pablo Apiolazza. The documentary was presented in September at the “Sail In Festival” of Bilbao and had a great success. This year we want to continue with this project, focusing on the themes of freedom of sailing and of pleasure of discovery”.

THE BARCOLANA DELLE IDEE – For years, Barcolana has been lived and told as a regatta. An extraordinary regatta, the most crowded regatta in Europe, but always a sport event.

Actually, Barcolana has become much more. As Paolo Rumiz said in a video about the spirit of the Barcolana produced by the Svbg in 2014, Barcolana is a “huge collective event”. It’s an event which allows Trieste to discover its European dimension. The town does so every year, when it reflects itself in that sea that made it rich in the past and that today represents a horizon of freedom and future.

“This year – explains Mitja Gialuz – we have decided to continue on the path we took in 2014, to enhance the event and turn it into an occasion to reflect on the maritime identity of this city. So, the “Barcolana delle Idee” was created. It is a cultural programme focusing on maritime culture and including important exhibitions and events. This programme has also seen a collaboration with Bompiani, publisher of the book “I Mari di Trieste” (The Seas of Trieste), which will be presented on Friday 10th October. Barcolana delle Idee is a journey through memory, which allows to enjoy the freedom of sailing, be it in one’s soul, in one’s life or at sea. A sense of freedom which is typical of Trieste. Anita Pittoni described the city as the European Philadelphia, that is a harbour where castaways find shelter, dreaming the same dream as Robinson Crusoe: building a city. Today, the inhabitants of this corner of Europe are aware that they have to look to the sea to find their future. The Barcolana is an occasion to think together about this horizon and this free and plural identity”.

BARCOLANA LAB – A museum, a workshop and a photographic exhibition at the same time, this is what BarcolanaLab is. Thanks to the support of the CRTrieste Foundation, BarcolanaLab will take place from 2nd October in the Magazzino delle Idee (located in via Cavour, entrance parallel to the sea), next to the entrance to the Porto Vecchio. It is a museum area offered by the which will offer different itineraries focusing on the sailing world.

Organized by the reporter Leopoldo Petto, Barcolana Lab is a fascinating exhibition of sailing ship models which was realized in association with the Aldebaran maritime Association, the Museo del Mare (Museum of the Sea) of Trieste and many private collectors. Visitors will be able to “sail” among about one hundred amazing models and live the evolution of sailing ships, from large wooden vessels dating back to the xviii and xix Century to the current highly technological boats.

An important part of the exhibition will be dedicated to nautical archaeology. Thanks to the archeological superintendency of Friuli Venezia Giulia and to the University of Udine, the most significant finds recovered during the excavation of the relict of a Roman ship found in the Stella river will be exhibited. A model of the Roman ship discovered will be exhibited too.

The workshop of model building and the workshop of archaeology will fulfill the didactic aim of the event, addressing in particular the students of Trieste’s middle schools. The model building workshop will show students how to build a little boat with the help of expert model builders, using a building kit specifically designed and realized for them. Then, on Saturday 10th October, the day before the Barcolana regatta, all the models realized will be launched at sea. In the workshop of archaeology, archaeologists of the superintendency of Friuli Venezia Giulia will accompany the students, with the help of didactic materials, through a unique journey to discover river navigation in ancient Rome.

The Magazzino delle Idee will also turn into the “Museo della Barcolana” (Barcolana Museum). Many posters of the past editions will be exhibition, and the peculiarities of this edition will be illustrated. BarcolanaLab has launched a challenge for the 50th edition of the regatta, which will take place in 2018. The challenge consists in writing a “collective story through images” of the regatta, composed of the numerous sea stories which have made this event unique in the last 47 years. A wall in the Magazzino delle Idee will be dedicated to the Barcolana stories: every sailor who has taken part in the regatta at least once can hang a picture of their boat and tell a story, an old episode or celebrate a crew.

In addition, there will be a photographic exhibition organized by Claudio Ernè, who has selected photographs from his archive depicting early XX Century race sailing boats.

“NOTTE BLU”, THE SEA-THEMED THEATRE MARATHON – Five theatres and one theme: the sea. For the first time this year the theatres of Trieste will host a special Barcolana-themed programme on Saturday 3rd October. A marathon involving Trieste’s theatres: Teatro Rossetti, Teatro Verdi, Teatro Miela, Teatro Teatro Sloveno and Teatro Contrada. A special night, full of theme-plays to create an artistic and cultural atmosphere on the occasion of the Barcolana. This amazing night has been organized with the collaboration of the lyric Theatre Foundation “G. Verdi”, the Teatro Stabile of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Teatro Stabile Sloveno, the Contrada-Teatro Stabile of Trieste and the Bonawentura – Teatro Miela. The “Notte blu” will be a kind of itinerary. From 9 pm to midnight, spectators will have the chance to attend different sea-themed plays in the different city theatres. The “Notte blu” will be inaugurated with an opening Choir and Orchestra performance at the Teatro Verdi at 9 pm, and the event will be closed with a performance at the Teatro Miela at 00:59. The theatrers , Teatro Sloveno and La Contrada will show plays that will be repeated three times and will last about 25-30 minutes, so that spectators will be able to attend plays in all the three theatres. The collaboration and the mutual support between Barcolana and the city theatres in the most lively and attractive week of the year is a great accomplishment for the city in terms of cultural offer and promotion of tourism (you will find the detailed programme in the calendar of the events attached here).

A GREAT VILLAGE – The Barcolana Village will be open from Wednesday 7th October to the evening of Sunday 11th October. The Trieste seafront – the Rive - will remain the traditional heart of the Village, hosting a mooring area along its quays for spectators to admire the beauty of the vessels, hospitality areas for sponsors, and temporary stores. But the Village will be even larger this year. The Molo IV will host sport and children’s activities (with entertainment and inflatable games) and an area to promote initiatives of institutions and associations. The Village was designed by the architect Giovanni Damiani (design team: Giovanni Damiani, Sofia Dal Piva and architect Giulia Bassi, Valeria Marzano, Federico Richter Crismancich and Marco Schmid) and will stretch as far as the city this year. According to the project, the Village will reach the Ponterosso and stretch up to the pedestrian area between via Cassa di Risparmio, Ponte Curto and via Trento. This structure is aimed to direct visitors to Piazza della Borsa and to bring the Village closer to the city, so that the Rive will not be the only attraction for tourists and spectators, but the whole city centre will be involved in the event. Another important innovation has been introduced this year: That’s the Sailing Show, an area supervised by Motomarine and dedicated to nautical equipment, which will host exhibitions of the main companies operating in this sector.

A NEW SYSTEM OF SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT - Thanks to the collaboration between the Port Authority, the Municipality of Trieste and the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, the Porto Vecchio (the Old Port) will provide areas to improve the logistics of the event. It will host car parks for spectators, a foot path and a cycle path to reach the city centre and also a train inside the port itself. This new transport system will allow to reduce traffic, offering visitors coming from outside Trieste and willing to reach the Rive areas to park their cars. Visitors can park their cars in the Porto Vecchio and then walk or ride in complete safety along the foot and cycle path connecting Magazzino 26 with Molo IV. Otherwise, they can take the Barcolana train connecting the Hydrodynamic Plant (so the moorings in the Molo Zero) with Molo IV. Once at the Molo IV, visitors will find themselves inside the Barcolana Village, at the heart of the celebration, which will also include the area of the Rive and the Stazione Marittima. Over 3kms will be livened up for ten days by the Barcolana festive atmosphere, contributing to making Trieste cheerful and lively, from Barcola to Piazza Unità d’Italia, and celebrating an event which is growing on land too.

FUORIREGATA – The areas of Barcola, the Porto Vecchio and the Rive of Trieste won’t be the only areas of the city involved in the cheerful and lively atmosphere of the Barcolana. Thanks to FuoriRegata, also the old town and the city’s high streets and pedestrian areas will live the great celebration and will be protagonists of the event. FuoriRegata will organize exhibitions, performances, cooking shows and events for children in many public and business areas of the city. (You can find further information in the dedicated release).

BARCOLANA IN MUSICA – The Barcolana soundtrack has been confirmed for this edition too. Piazza Unità d’Italia will once again host two nights of free concerts for every sailing and music enthusiast. Anyway, an amazing innovation has been introduced in this event too. On Friday night, different local bands will challenge each other in a music contest. The winning band will open the Saturday night concert. Tim Music, a music streaming platform which organizes and takes part in live events, shows and previews, will be one of the media partners of the event. A playlist named “Barcolana” will be created in the Tim Music App including songs of the band winning the contest.

The deejay and radio speaker Alessio Bertallot will be the editorial and artistic director of the platform and he will also be one of the judges of the contest. (Further information about the Saturday night concert will be available in the next few days). BARCOLANA FESTIVAL, FIRST EDITION MANY SPORTS AND JUST ONE PASSION: THE SEA

IN THE BACINO SAN GIUSTO SWIMMING, SUP, ROWING, WATERPOLO AND A HIKING DAY

A great passion for sports and the sea. This is what participants of the Barcolana Festival have in common. The event has been created to involve and show different sea disciplines within the Barcolana event. “We want to enlarge our horizons – explains the Chairman Mitja Gialuz – We want to live the Barcolana as a great festival, an occasion to have fun, entertain visitors and experience the sea. So, we decided to collaborate with our partner sport associations and to create new partnerships in order to organize a heterogeneous event, addressing a larger audience. Everybody loves the sea and sailing in Trieste, but other sports should not be excluded. That’s why we decided to collaborate this year”.

Many different challenges will take place in the same areas used for the Barcolana regatta and its many sport events. The first challenge will be the Sup Cup, which will take place on 3rd October and will bring to Trieste one of the trendiest disciplines at the moment. All that’s needed is a surfboard and a paddle to surf near the shore. Then, the wakeboarding challenge will follow. Even though no sail is needed to wakeboard, the discipline was included in the event Barcolana Fun. Competitors will perform jumps and evolutions in the Ponterosso channel, with the help of a surfboard, a winch and a springboard.

On Sunday 4th October, Barcolana Nuota will take place. It is a long-distance swimming event in the Bacino San Giusto, organized with the Trieste swimming association Nuotamatori. Competitors will swim along a course stretching over a mile with the finish line in Piazza Unità d’Italia. Then, it will be the turn of waterpolo. The team Pallanuoto Trieste will celebrate its first season in the Italian major league and it will do so in the Barcolana cheerful atmosphere. In addition, in the weekend of the Barcolana regatta, Barcolana Rema will take place. The event, organized with the Saturnia Rowing Club, will consist in a regatta involving 4-person and 8-person Yoles, which will race off the dam in the Porto Vecchio. Rowers from Trieste will take part in the event too. The last event will be focused on trekking, with a walk along a panoramic path allowing to enjoy the Barcolana from a different viewpoint, far from the traffic of the city.
