FOR EDUCATORS GETTING STARTED This guide includes a variety of materials designed to help educators and students prepare for their visit to the exhibition The Munich Secession and America, which is on view at the Frye Art Museum, January 24–April 12, 2009. Materials include resources and activities for use before, during, and after visits. The goal of this guide is to challenge students to think critically about what they see and to engage in the process of experiencing and discussing art. It is intended to facilitate students’ personal discoveries about art and is aimed at strengthening the skills that allow students to view art independently. -

EVENTS IN 5673—INTRODUCTION 221 EVENTS IN 5673 JULY 1, 1912, TO JUNE 30, 1913 INTRODUCTION I In the events of the year 5G73 for the Jewry, the Balkan Wars rank first. Waged with incredible brutality, they brought widespread suffering to the Jews in the former limits of the Turkish Empire. The success of the Balkan States has re- sulted in the transfer of 120,000 Jews from Turkish sov- ereignty, under which they have lived since their exile from Spain and Portugal. Servia and particularly Greece now have large Jewish communities within their territory, and the Bul- garian Jewry will be greatly enlarged. Roumania adds to her population and citizenship the Jews of Silistria. For the Balkan Jewry, the change involves new conditions, social and economic as well as political. Their situation in what was formerly Turkey in Europe, and their future, as described by the representatives of the Jewish organizations of Europe and America that united for the work of relief, cannot but be of great concern to the Jews the world over (see pp. 188-206). Notable in connection with the Balkan War are two things: the prompt and generous response of the prosperous Jewries in Western Europe and America to the Balkan distress, and the effort to secure a guarantee for the civil and political liberty and equality of the Jews in the conquered territory. An in- ternational association, the Union des Associations Israelites, 222 AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK was formed for unifying relief work and effort toward the re- habilitation of the ruined communities. Representatives were dispatched to the scene to insure systematic action, and a study made of the situation with a view to the permanent improve- ment of conditions among the 200,000 Jews in the former boundaries of Turkey in Europe. -

Angel 2017 PhD Abstract A Moral Persuasion: The Nazi-Looted Art Recoveries of the Max Stern Art Restitution Project, 2002-2013 Sara J. Angel Department of Art University of Toronto Year of convocation: 2017 In 1937, under Gestapo orders, the Nazis forced the Düsseldorf-born Jewish art dealer Max Stern to sell over 200 of his family’s paintings at Lempertz, a Cologne-based auction house. Stern kept this fact a secret for the rest of his life despite escaping from Europe to Montreal, Canada, where he settled and became one of the country’s leading art dealers by the mid-twentieth century. A decade after Stern’s death in 1987, his heirs (McGill University, Concordia University, and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) discovered the details of what he had lost, and how in the post-war years Stern travelled to Germany in an attempt to reclaim his art. To honour the memory of Max Stern, they founded the Montreal- based Max Stern Art Restitution Project in 2002, dedicated to regaining ownership of his art and to the study of Holocaust-era plunder and recovery. This dissertation presents the histories and circumstances of the first twelve paintings claimed by the organization in the context of the broader history of Nazi-looted art between 1933-2012. Organized into thematic chapters, the dissertation documents how, by following a carefully devised approach of moral persuasion that combines practices like publicity, provenance studies, law enforcement, and legal precedents, the Max Stern Art Restitution Project set international precedents in the return of cultural property. -

Die Lücke von mittlerweile fast einem Jahrzehnt wird nun mit zwei Bänden weitgehend geschlossen, die jeweils vier Jahre umfassen: ein Band für die Jahre 2003 bis 2006, ein zweiter für die Jahre 2007 bis 2010 . -

ANHANG Die Döllinger-Bildnisse von Franz Lenbach Von Tanja Söder 1. Zur Erforschung von Franz Lenbachs Döllinger-Bildnissen Franz Lenbach* 1 stand mit Ignaz von Döllinger spätestens seit Beginn der 1870er Jahre in Verbindung. Jedenfalls schreibt Winfried Ranke, daß »eine durch Döllinger vermittelte Bekanntschaft mit dem britischen Staatsmann William Gladstone Lenbach 1871 und 1881 sogar nach London führte«2. Florst Ludwig3 zufolge schuf Lenbach bis in die 1890er Jahre 12 Bildnisse von Döllinger, auf denen er ihn in den verschiedensten Altersstufen festhielt. Nach meinen Untersuchungen existieren jedoch mindestens 25, meist undatierte Porträts. Ihre chronologische Reihenfolge wurde bislang von der Forschung nicht zureichend geklärt. Als Auftraggeber kommen verschiedene Personen in Betracht; es handelt sich dabei vermutlich um Freundschaftsbildnisse. Das Döllinger-Gemälde des Lenbachhauses München4 trägt die Inschrift »Ign.v. Doellinger/ Verehrung/ Vollst./ F Lenbach«. Olaf Gulbransson 1873 Oslo - 1958 Tegernsee (Bavaria) At a very early age, Olaf Gulbransson already displayed outstanding drawing skills. It was therefore no surprise that at the age of twelve he should be admitted to the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Oslo. He began producing caricatures for Norwegian satirical magazines as a student and earned widespread recognition for his work through exhibitions at home and abroad. In 1902, he met the Munich publisher Albert Langen, who offered him a job on the permanent staff of the weekly satirical magazine Simplicissimus he had founded in 1896. Gulbransson moved to Munich and between 1903 and 1944 was to be one of the magazine’s most popular caricaturists. Highly acclaimed and widely liked, he was noted for his eskimoesque appearance and a passion for nudism. Eduard Wasow, Olaf Gulbransson, 1929 Gulbransson shot to fame and popularity among Simplicissimus readers with a series of portraits titled Berühmte Zeitgenossen [Famous Contemporaries]. This 59-part series was published in irregular intervals from 1903 onwards. The portraits testify to his extraordinary ability to accurately portray human gestures and facial expressions using as his models prominent figures from the world of art, literature, music and intellectual life such as Franz von Lenbach, Gerhart Hauptmann, Siegfried Wagner and Theodor Mommsen. The portraits, executed in pen and ink, display a soft, smooth, highly precise linearity that dispenses with any excessive distortions and provides a humorous glimpse of the character and self-image of the figures portrayed. His caricatures on current political and ethical issues, many of them published as full-page illustrations in Simplicissimus, enjoyed equal popularity with the magazine’s readership.
