Both images are the stuff of fiction and don’t reflect the work women such as Zamejtis did in police stations around the country to save other women from seemingly hopeless fates. The popular 20th-century image of prostitutes as gum-snap- ping, sharp-tongued women in high heels filing into a police station past a line of amused male cops did not reflect the reality Zamejtis and other policewomen witnessed. The truth about prostitution glossed over or ignored by society included a nightmare world where drug addiction drove women to sell their bodies, and violence at the hands of pimps kept prostitutes on the street. Cops such as Zamejtis could look beyond labels like “women of the night” to see women enslaved by drugs and violence. They also saw the horrible reality of domestic violence at a time when police officers were not trained or equipped with protocols to stop abus- ers and protect abused women. Expressions like, “She must have had it coming,” or, “Geez, he’s a great guy, he’d never hit a woman,” rang louder than cries for help from women living in deadly domestic situations. Laws, training and programs all provide 21st-century protections to women facing abuse. Tragically, women still die at the hands of abus- ers, but it is worth thinking about the women vic- timized by sexual exploiters or abusers decades ago who were shown a path out of Hell by cops such as Clara Zamejtis.

HOUSTON (AP) — Tom Brady led one of the greatest comebacks in sports history highlighted by an unbelievable Julian Edelman catch that helped lift New England from a 25-point hole against the Atlanta Falcons to the Patriots’ fth Super Bowl vic- tory, the rst ever in overtime. The Patriots scored 19 points in the nal quar- ter, including a pair of 2-point conversions, then marched relentlessly to James White’s 2-yard touch- down run in overtime to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 Sunday night. Brady, the rst quarterback with ve Super Bowl rings, guided the Patriots (17-2) through a tiring Atlanta defense for fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 6-yard pass to Danny Amendola and a 1-yard run by White, which came with 57 seconds remaining in regulation. White ran for the rst 2-pointer and Amendola did the deed with a reception on the sec- ond. Brady, winning Super Bowl MVP for a record fourth-time, nished 43 for 62, the most attempts in Super Bowl history, for 466 yards, also a record, and two touchdowns. “You know, we all brought each other back,” Brady said. “We never felt out of it. It was a tough battle. They have a great team. I give them a lot of credit. We just made a few more plays than them.” Before the stunning rally — New England already held the biggest comeback in the nal period when it PHOTO | ASSOCIATED PRESS turned around a 10-point de cit to beat Seattle two PHOTO | ASSOCIATED PRESS James White celebrates after his touchdown Tom Brady reacts after of cials ruled Edelman’s during the second half of Super Bowl 51.
