The Royal Darwin is now seeking to appoint an inspirational and resilient leader as its new Director, General and Acute Medicine and the Rapid Assessment and Planning Unit with a demonstrated track record of senior clinical leadership and the ability to lead and manage change and foster collaborative working relationships in a collegial environment. The successful applicant will strengthen clinician engagement and gain the support of all stakeholders for new models of care to improve health outcomes, especially for indigenous Australians. The successful candidate will be an active, outcomes-focussed clinical leader of the Division of Medicine, with the ability to contribute to clinical governance as well as organisation-wide, effective and timely strategic change within agreed financial targets.

The Royal Darwin Hospital is co-located in the northern suburbs of Darwin with the 100 bed Darwin Private Hospital. It is a University teaching hospital affiliated with (NT medical program), the Menzies School of Health Research and the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre. With 361 beds it provides a broad range of services in specialty areas to the Darwin urban population as well as serving as a referral centre to the whole Top End of the , a population of around 200,000, including rural and very remote Aboriginal communities. There is a strong clinical focus on Indigenous health and chronic diseases. Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) is the only tertiary level hospital, which supports other smaller hospitals including Palmerston Regional Hospital, Katherine Hospital and Gove District Hospital as major referral centre. RDH has almost all major medical and surgical specialities (except cardiac surgery) and level 3 ICU and Emergency departments.

Palmerston Hospital with 116 beds is a subacute service and opened in August 2018 as an extension of Royal Darwin Hospital, including an Emergency Department, Day and low acuity Surgery, Rehabilitation, a Medical ward, a GEM ward and Ambulatory care services.

DIVISION OF MEDICINE

Division of Medicine is the largest of the 4 major clinical divisions with thin RDH. This consists of almost all medical speciality units including General and Acute Medicine (GACM), cardiology, Respiratory, Renal, Infectious disease, Cancer services, Haematology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Geriatrics, Rehabilitation and Palliative care.

GACM in the largest clinical unit with 6 medical units (one unit based at PRH) and responsible for approximately 150 Inpatients beds and 4500 annual separations.

DIRECTOR OF GENERAL & ACUTE CARE MEDICINE & RAPID ASSESSMENT & PLANNING UNIT

POSITION PURPOSE

The Director of General and Acute Medicine & Rapid Assessment & Planning Unit (Director) provides expert leadership for the Department of General and Acute Medicine (GACM) and Medical Admission and Planning Unit (MAPU) and supports the Medical Co-Director with implementation of business priorities.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director is responsible to:

• Provide expert leadership for the Department of General and Acute Medicine (GACM) and Medical Admission and Planning Unit (MAPU). Support Medical Co-Director with implementation of various health business priorities including safety and quality and patient flow. Provide Clinical Service within GACM and (or) and medical sub-speciality. Assist with divisional clinical governance and operations through a close working relationship with RDPH senior leadership. • Provide leadership in fostering partnerships between healthcare providers across a range of disciplines and services to enhance the capacity for multi-disciplinary care. Establishing and refining organisational structures and work practices to support service delivery and review of best practice clinical processes, and implementation of evidence based medicine and systems. • Undertake quality improvement activities, review and revise policies, procedures and guidelines. Contribute to research agenda about the complexities of management of chronic diseases in the Northern Territory. • Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces • Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

The incumbent must:

1. Be eligible for general, and/or specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent; and 2. Hold specialist training as a GACM physician or extensive experience in the area of GACM.
