Holiday plan

The school’s holiday plan for 2019/20 is available on the school’s website and school communications platform Aula (see Communication).

Pre- and after school care

Students in nursery class and Primary 1-3 are entitled to a space in the school’s After School Care, which is located on the ground floor of the school. New nursery class students are automatically enrolled in the After School Care from 1st August the year they start school and will receive information from the After School Care in June. New students in Primary 1-3 must write to Uri Harlam, the Head of After School Care, at [email protected] to enrol. The opening hours in the After School Care are 6:30-17:00 on school days and 7:00-17:00 during the holidays.

Transport and parking

There are bike and scooter racks by the school’s three entrances. If you are travelling by train, the nearest train station is Carlsberg Station – about a five-minute walk away.

Practical information before school start – nursery class 1

There is also an Apcoa carpark below the school (Franciska Clausens Plads), which you can access via Bohrsgade. You can park for free in the designated kiss and ride zone for max. 15 minutes on weekdays from 07:30-09:00 and 14:00-17:00. Please turn your engines off when parked.

Bus passes

The school can order a bus pass for students travelling on their own to/from school free of charge provided the following criteria are met: • The child is resident in the Municipality of and • The route to school (according to www.krak.dk) is: o more than 2.5 km for students in Nursery class to Primary 3 o more than 6 km for students in Primary 4 to Secondary 1 o more than 7 km for students in Secondary 2 to Secondary 4 o more than 9 km for students in Secondary 5 If the student is resident outside the Municipality of Copenhagen, the parents must pay for the transportation. This also applies to transportation between home and after school events and confirmation preparation.

To request a bus pass, please write to the school secretary Lizanne Frederiksen Düring via the school communications platform (Aula from August 2019) or send an email to [email protected].

Class schedule and meeting time

The doors to the class rooms open at 8:00 and classes start at 8:10 each day. Finish times vary depending on the individual class schedule, which is available on Aula (see Communications). If there are changes to the class schedule, you will be notified in advance and the change will be shown on the class schedule. If your child is not in class by 8:10 a.m., your child will be registered late or absent. If your child is late, we kindly ask you to accompany them to the classroom and drop them off without disturbing the class.

Absence

In case of absence due to illness or other reasons, parents must inform the teacher via Aula. If you require days off or holiday outside the scheduled school holidays, you need to request and obtain written approval, or the absence will be registered as absence without permission. Class teachers can provide up to two days off per year. Anything beyond that requires the permission of the school’s management. The school only approves such leave in special circumstances as longer periods of absence can impact the child’s learning and disrupt the class.

Practical information before school start – nursery class 2

If your child needs to attend an appointment with a doctor or dentist during school hours, please notify the teacher in advance via Aula. We strongly encourage parents to schedule the appointments after school if possible and that parents bring their children back to school after any appointments during school time.

Lunch and milk

The children need to bring their own lunch to school unless they have signed up for the school lunch through the culinary school/madskolen. They should also bring a small, nutritious snack for the short morning break, which is easy to unwrap and eat, and a drinks bottle with water, as we advise that they drink water regularly during the school day. Clearly label lunch boxes and drinks bottles with your child’s name.

Parents can create an account and order lunch for their children through the culinary school/madskole: https://europaskolen.skolemad.dk/

Parents can order milk for their children for the long lunch break through Mejeriernes Skolemælksordning: https://www.skolemaelk.dk/bestil-maelk/. See information in English.

Birthdays

We encourage the celebration of birthdays in the class and outside school. In Danish schools, it is generally agreed that birthday parties should include the whole class or all the girls or all the boys. Some classes agree to group birthdays into four annual parties for the early autumn, late autumn, winter and spring birthday children. Parents also often agree on a gifts policy. These things are usually agreed on a class basis at the first parents meeting in the class.

On your child’s birthday, you are welcome to bring a cake to class. Please inform the class teacher in advance and ensure you bring everything needed to eat the treat (e.g. napkins or disposable plates) and that the cake is pre-cut. Please consider children with allergies in the class. We do not allow candy.

Play dates and play groups

We encourage parents to organise playdates after school with as many children in the class as possible. The class teacher can help parents organise play groups to ensure that all the children get an opportunity to make friends and play with a wide range of children in the class.

Class Parents and Parents Council

At the first parents meeting of the year, the class elects four class (contact) parents. Class parents help organise coffee mornings and other events and activities in the class and welcome new families to the class. One of the class parents is also elected to represent the class on the school’s Parents Council, which meets 3-4 times a year. A substitute should also be elected.

Coffee mornings

We organise coffee mornings in the classes several times a year, normally from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. The class teacher will notify you of the dates. Usually the class parents help to organise what each family should bring.

Indoor shoes

The children should bring non-slip shoes for indoor use to avoid wet and dirty shoes in the class rooms. The shoes should be kept in a bag outside the class room.

Change of clothes

The children should always wear clothes appropriate for the weather and have a change of clothes in case the clothes get wet. The change of clothes should be kept in a bag in the wardrobe and should be clearly labelled.

School bag and pencil case

The children need a school bag and a pencil case. Both should be clearly labelled with name and contact number. In nursery class, we recommend a small school bag. In Primary 1 and up, we recommend a normal size school bag that can hold an A4 folder and a few books. Students in Primary 1-5 should also have a gym bag for PE.

The pencil case should have the following contents: • Pencils (min. three) • Colour pencils • Eraser • Pencil sharpener • Ruler • Glue stick

Practical information before school start – nursery class 4

We expect the children to bring their pencil case every day containing these items and pencils to be sharpened. Please start checking the school bag and pencil cases with your children at least once a week so they learn how to prepare for school. It is important that the pencil case is designed so it is easy for the children to find the items they need.

Wardrobes and drawers

Outside each class room there are wardrobes for each of the children. Unfortunately, the wardrobes are not very big and can quickly get very messy, so we encourage you to keep your children’s change of clothes and shoes in a bag with your child’s name on it. Please help your children keep the wardrobes tidy and ensure they take home items they no longer need at school. Each of the children also have a drawer inside the class room where they can keep their books, papers and pencil cases.

Books/educational materials

The teachers will provide the children with all the books and educational materials required during the school year. In nursery class, these books are generally always kept in the child’s drawer.

Communication

For information about school and class activities, events or current issues - or if you need to contact a teacher or another parent - you should use the school’s online communications platform.

All public schools in Denmark are introducing a new communications platform called Aula in the school year 2019/20. You will be able to log on to aula.dk from 1st August 2019 provided you have a NEM ID or Uni Login (both require that you have a CPR number). If you need help obtaining a CPR number and NEM ID, please contact the international citizen service at International House Copenhagen: https://ihcph.kk.dk/. Unfortunately, the school is not able to assist with this.

Please check Aula at least twice a week and ensure you keep your contact information up to date.

Lost and found

Lost and found items are placed in the boxes in the After School Care on the ground floor. High value lost and found items such as wallets and mobile phones are kept in the school’s office on the 1st floor. Students are generally asked not to bring valuables to school. The school can accept no responsibility for loss or damage to the personal property of students.

Mobile phone policy

Students are not allowed to use or access their mobile phones during the school day. Important messages to or from students and parents must go through the school's office or staff in the After School Care.

All mobile phones/electronic devices must be turned off and handed in to the teacher at the start of the first lesson. The teacher will keep the phones/electronic devices locked away securely until the end of the school day, when they are returned to the students. The school and After School Care cannot be held liable for loss, theft or damage to mobile phones/electronic devices.

Photography

The school uses photography and video to communicate our activities and events and provide a variety of information about the school on Aula, the school’s website and other platforms. When you log on to Aula for the first time, you will be asked to give your consent that we may use photos and video of your child. You can withdraw your consent on Aula at any time.

Field trips

Off-site field trips will be organised during the year for educational purposes, linked to the school’s curriculum, to enhance and enrich our student’s learning experience. When you log on to Aula for the first time, you will be asked to give your consent that your child may participate in off-site field trips. You can withdraw your consent on Aula at any time.
