The purpose of this component is for students to develop their listening and appraising skills through the study of music across a variety of styles and genres. The content is grouped into six areas of study, containing either two or three set works. This component gives students the opportunity to reflect on, analyse and evaluate music in aural and/or written form. To achieve this objective, students need to use their knowledge and understanding of musical elements, context and language to make critical judgements about the repertoire and context of music within the areas of study. Students should also study a range of pieces beyond these set works. The suggested other musical pieces for each area of study (see Appendix 4 of the specification) provide students with breadth, enabling them to place their knowledge of musical elements, context and language in a wider context, and apply their knowledge and understanding to more pieces of music. The suggested other music can help students to relate their learning to music in the set works, but their study is not compulsory. Teachers can identify and teach other pieces of music to support their students’ learning. The following music and musicians are examples of how each of the areas of study can be approached from a diverse range of other perspectives. The pieces have been chosen to encourage students to think beyond the mainstream and over-represented composers and styles of music, and instead to consider alternative and less well-known types and origins of music. -

Enya the Discography
“…vaulting cathedrals of sound, framed by luminous piano, shimmering synthesizer orchestrations, and, above all, the seemingly infinite layers of vocal harmonies...” Enya The Discography With her blend of folk melodies, synthesized backdrops, and classical motifs, Enya created a distinctive style that more closely resembled new age than the folk and Celtic music that provided her initial influences. Enya, birth name Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, was born in Gweedore, County Donegal, in Ireland in 1961 to a musical family, the fourth youngest of nine children. Several of her siblings formed the band An Clann As Dobhair in 1968, renamed as Clannad in the 1970s: Eithne joined the group in 1980, playing keyboards and providing backing vocals on a couple of their albums. In 1982, shortly before Clannad became famous for "Theme From Harry’s Game", producer and manager Nicky Ryan left the group and Eithne joined him to start her own solo career. As a musical group, Enya is collaboration between three people: Enya herself, who composes and performs the music; Nicky Ryan, who produces the albums, and Roma Ryan, who writes the lyrics in various languages. Enya is an approximate transcription of how Eithne is pronounced in her native Irish. Journal of Psychosocial Studies Volume 10, Issue 1, May 2017 Failure, guilt, confession, redemption? Revisiting unpublished research through a psychosocial lens MARCUS FREE Abstract This article offers some critical reflections on a case of failure to bring a qualitative research project to completion and publication earlier in the author’s career. Possible explanations are considered in light of insights derived from the ‘psychosocial’ turn in qualitative research associated particularly with Hollway and Jefferson’s Doing Qualitative Research Differently (2001/2013). The project was an interview-based study of the life experiences of middle aged and older Irish emigrants in England, conducted in the late 1990s in Birmingham and Manchester. The article considers the failure as a possible psychic defence against the anxiety that completion and publication would be a betrayal of the interviewees, many of whom described experiences distressing to themselves and the interviewer. The psychoanalytic concepts of ‘transference’ and ‘countertransference’ are used to speculate as to the role of the unconscious at work in the interview encounters and how, despite class and generational differences, psychodynamic fantasies relating to both interviewees’ and interviewer’s migration histories and experiences may have impacted upon each other. Introduction Many researchers leave unfinished projects behind them and experience varying degrees of regret and uncertainty as to the reasons for reluctance or inability to bring the research to fruition. This article concerns a qualitative research project from earlier in my career that never reached completion and remains a source of guilt and shame for me. It revisits the research critically using a psychosocial lens in an attempt to identify and consider the possible underlying reasons for this failure. -

A History of the O’Shea Clan (July 2012) At the beginning of the second millennium in the High Kingship of Brian Boru, there were three distinct races or petty kingdoms in what is now the County of Kerry. In the north along the Shannon estuary lived the most ancient of these known as the Ciarraige, reputed to be descendants of the Picts, who may have preceded the first Celts to settle in Ireland. On either side of Dingle Bay and inland eastwards lived the Corcu Duibne1 descended from possibly the first wave of Celtic immigration called the Fir Bolg and also referred to as Iverni or Erainn. Legend has it that these Fir Bolg, as we will see possibly the ancestors of the O’Shea clan, landed in Cork. Reputedly small, dark and boorish they settled in Cork and Kerry and were the authors of the great Red Branch group of sagas and the builders of great stone fortresses around the seacoasts of Kerry. Finally around Killarney and south of it lived the Eoganacht Locha Lein, descendants of a later Celtic visitation called Goidels or Gaels. Present Kerry boundary (3) (2) (1) The territories of the people of the Corcu Duibne with subsequent sept strongholds; (1) O’Sheas (2) O’Falveys (3) O’Connells The Eoganacht Locha Lein were associated with the powerful Eoganacht race, originally based around Cashel in Tipperary. By both military prowess and political skill they had become dominant for a long period in the South of Ireland, exacting tributes from lesser kingdoms such as the Corcu Duibne. -

Ireland – Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula Bicycle Tour 2021 Individual Self-Guided and Guided 8 Day/7 Nights Our Safari starts and finishes in Killarney, shadowed by the MacGillikuddy Reeks and adjacent to the famous Muckross National Park. We head deep into the Iveragh Peninsula along quiet backroads toward the villages of Sneem and Glenbeigh. We then head to the Dingle Peninsula, the most westerly point in Europe, and sees us cycling along the dramatic Slea Head coast amongst Neolithic ruins with a wonderful view out to the Skelling and Blasket Islands. We rest amongst the great array of shops and restaurants that the town of Dingle has to offer. The weary may pause for a well- earned pint in the famous Dick Macs pub, which doubles up as a cobbler! After our rest day the Conor Pass stretches the legs again as we take in the stunning vistas of the peninsula from its lofty perch before enjoying the freewheel down to lunch. Our last day's cycle takes us through the Gap of Dunloe and Black Valley, a fitting finish to this dramatic tour, before we end up all too quickly back in Killarney. BiblioMara is an indexed, annotated bibliography of written material relating to Ireland’s coastal and maritime heritage; that is a list of books, articles, theses and reports with a short account of their content. The index provided at the end of the bibliography allows users to search the bibliography using keywords and authors’ names. The majority of the documents referenced were published after the year 1900. What are ‘written materials relating to Ireland’s coastal heritage’? The BiblioMara bibliography contains material that has been written down which relates to the lives of the people on the coast; today and in the past; their history and language; and the way that the sea has affected their way of life and their imagination. The bibliography attempts to list as many materials as possible that deal with the myriad interactions between people and their maritime surroundings. The island of Ireland and aspects of coastal life are covered, from lobster pot making to the uses of seaweed, from the fate of the Spanish Armada to the future of wave energy, from the sailing schooner fleets of Arklow to the County Down herring girls, from Galway hookers to the songs of Tory Islanders. -
