We acknowledge for their financial support of our publishing program the Canada Council for the Arts, the Arts Council, the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Media Development Corporation, and the Government of Canada through the Canada Book Fund (CBF). Cover illustration by Marie-Louise Gay Dear Friends,

When we are acquiring books for the Groundwood list, the first question we ask is whether the submission is strong enough to be published in book form and kept in print, as many of our books are, for decades. Other questions follow: Is it a story that will resonate with children? Will it delight, entertain and inform them? Is it original, beautiful, important? Does it give us goose bumps? If we say yes enough times in answer to these questions, we have found ourselves a new title to cherish and champion.

But a strong publishing program doesn’t magically happen just because you’ve taken a bunch of wonderful books and thrown them all together. List planning requires its own set of questions: Do we have books for readers of every age, from babies and toddlers to young adults? Do we have something new from authors and illustrators who are already well known and well loved? Is there a new author or illustrator to celebrate? Do the books, looked at as a group, represent North America’s ethnic, racial and cultural diversity? Occasionally we have a season where, despite all our efforts, there is a gap on the list, a season where it just feels that there is something missing.

I’m happy to say that Fall 2014 is not one of those seasons. We have a new board book for young readers who love animals and jokes. We have groundbreaking new books from Marie-Louise Gay and Deborah Ellis. And we have a first-time author/illustrator to introduce. We have funny books, serious books and books that are just plain gorgeous. I hope you will agree that this really is a list that has everything. And I hope you will agree that there is a book here (maybe even more than one!) for every child.
