As I visited other people’s houses and, aged seven by now, took my own solid state transistor radio off to boarding school with me, I was made aware of The Light Programme, now Radio 2, and Sparky’s Magic Piano, Puff the Magic Dragon and Nelly the Elephant, I also began a lifelong devotion to radio comedy as Round The Horne, The Clitheroe Kid, I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again, Just A Minute, The Men from The Ministry and Week Ending all made themselves known to me. -

It analyses the relationship between the physical location of TV series production at Elstree Studios, UK, the representation of place in programmes, and the international trade in television fiction between the UK and USA. The TV series made at Elstree by the ITC and ABC companies and their affiliates linked Britishness with an international modernity associated with the USA, while also promoting national specificity. To do this, they drew on film production techniques that were already common for TV series production in Hollywood. -

Detailed Responses to the recommendations of the report, Voting Rights for Prisoners, are set out below: Recommendation 1 The Committee recommends that: The Welsh Government and National Assembly for Wales Commission introduce legislation to give all those Welsh prisoners who are serving custodial sentences of less than four years the right to vote in devolved Welsh elections. Mohammad Asghar and Mark Isherwood do not agree with this recommendation. Response: Accept The Welsh Government believes that enabling at least some prisoners to vote will send very strong and positive messages to prisoners that they still have a stake in society and, in turn, that they have responsibilities towards society as a whole. Enfranchisement based on sentence length will strike a reasonable balance; we agree that a custodial sentence of four years is an appropriate threshold, which acknowledges the nature, gravity and circumstances of the offending. Accordingly, the Welsh Government will work to introduce legislation in this Assembly to enable prisoners from Wales serving a custodial sentence of less than four years to vote in devolved local government elections. We shall work closely with the UK Government and partners to implement such legislation. We estimate that some 1,900 prisoners out of a total of about 4,800 prisoners from Wales would be enfranchised. The recommendation concerning Assembly elections is directed to the Llywydd and it would be for her, in the first instance, to respond in the context of the Senedd and Elections (Wales) Bill. Financial Implications – The financial implications of providing for prisoner voting will be addressed as part of the negotiations which will take place with the UK Government. -

If you are entering a State Prison for the first time you will be interested in what is expected of you, as well as what will be provided to you, by the Georgia Department of Corrections. This booklet will answer some of your questions. It outlines the rules and regulations of the Department, as well as the disciplinary and grievance procedures that will apply to you during your incarceration. You will also learn about the programs offered through your institution. There are rules and regulations, which you will be expected to observe while in prison as you prepare for your release from prison. You will be treated humanely and you will be allowed to earn opportunities to change the life habits that helped put you in prison. -

What Is a Lighting Director?
What is a lighting director by Martin Kempton What is a lighting director? Simply put - a lighting director designs the lighting for multi-camera television productions. He or she instructs the crew of electricians in their work in addition to guiding the team of operators who usually sit with the LD in the lighting control room. All this while working closely with the director and the rest of the production team to deliver the best possible pictures. However, there's rather more to it than that, and on this page on the website I explain where LDs work, what kinds of shows LDs work on and give some of the background to what we do. It's important to point out right away that simple 'illumination' is actually a relatively unimportant part of our work. Current TV cameras are capable of operating in very low light levels so it would be quite possible to see what was going on in most studios simply by switching on the houselights. Fortunately, producers and directors realise that the result would look pretty awful. Another thing is also worth making clear – a lighting director is not an electrician. He or she might have been once, but an LD is not another name for a crew chief or gaffer. Most television LDs do not have electrical qualifications, although some may have. In any case, this is not a requirement of the job. The electrical supervisor (gaffer) is in charge of realising the LD’s design in the studio from the rigging and electrical point of view. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Hertfordshire Research Archive ‘Filmed Across the World, Made at Elstree’: How television made at Elstree in the 1960s and 70s brought a global experience to the small screen The various studios of Elstree and Borehamwood were, in the 1960s and 70s, home to globetrotting adventurers including The Saint, Department S, Jason King, Danger Man, and The Baron. While many of the shows made featured the globetrotting exploits of their leading characters – Simon Templar, international playboy; Jason King, Interpol agent and novelist; and John Drake, spy and fixer for international organisations – the production crew rarely, if ever, left the confines of the TV sound stages and backlot, except for a brief dash down Borehamwood high street or into rural Hertfordshire. This paper will discuss the operations and technical methodologies used on a weekly basis by production crews in their attempts to recreate Rome, Paris, Madrid and even the Sahara Desert on small budgets, using stock footage and with limited materials. During the 1960s, the studios of Elstree and Borehamwood produced some of the most adventurous and prolific television productions in the UK. Three major studio sites (all of them actually in Borehamwood, not in Elstree) – MGM British Studios, Associated British Productions (ABPC) and ATV Studios – were all producing television content 52 weeks of the year. “Elstree’s” output during this time was at its peak. Production crews at Elstree were able to make shows with an international flavour, while barely leaving the studio.
