KAKIRA OUTGROWERS RURAL DEVELOPMENT FUND (KORD)

Location: Jinja, Setting: Rural/Urban Established: 2005 Staff: 6

Mission and Objectives:

The Mission of KORD is to improve the quality of life of the community within a 50km radius of Sugar Limited (KSL) by facilitating the provision of loans, and implementing community development projects.

KORD’s focus areas include; Access to financial services by farmers, improving community service delivery infrastructures namely education, roads and health facilities, environment conservation through institutional and household energy saving stoves, care and support for OVC, water and sanitation and fundraising for community development projects.

Community and Client Description KORD is committed to supporting the provision of infrastructure services to communities within 50 kilometers of Kakira Sugar Limited (sugar cane growing zones). The majority of these communities are Outgrowers (about 9000 registered farmers), and are located in 22 sub counties in Jinja, , Iganga, Luuka and Kamuli Districts of Region. KORD focuses on services that directly benefit Sugarcane Outgrowers, but also implement projects that are of benefit to the broader community. The community generally is peasantry and entirely depends on sugarcane growing, transporting and selling as a business. A few farmers have diversified to small scale food crop growing.

KORD PROGRAM AREAS: 1. Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) 2. Community road rehabilitation 3. Education – classroom and science laboratory construction 4. Agriculture 5. Health, water and sanitation 6. Environment conservation

KORD’s proposed projects for 2017 Interns (Internship Opportunities):

KORD has three (3) priority projects areas for participants to choose from:

a) Economic Strengthening Project: Vulnerable households within KORD’s area coverage have failed to access credit to start up small scale enterprises that bring in daily household income due to lack of collateral required by banks.

KORD is considering a project to address this problem. The project is set to focus on grouping these households into village saving and loan associations of not more than 30 members each and trained in basics of saving and group dynamics. Members will be supported by the project to pool resources together; get loans out of the pool of funds at an agreed rate but not more than 5% so as to start up small scale enterprises and also use the savings to meet other basic requirements like access to health.

The students can help with forming a pilot village saving groups, work with the community to develop the saving group structures and portfolios; design training curriculum for the pilot group and conduct relevant capacity building trainings.

b) Water and sanitation Project: All the five districts of KORD operations are characterized by limited access to clean and safe water, with big implications on the quality of life of the local citizens. KORD has identified some communities in dire need of water and wishes to rehabilitate some springs with continuous flow of water as a cheaper source compared to sinking boreholes. The students working together with the community and the KORD staff can help with provision of access to clean; protecting water springs and sources and formation and training of water source committees on their roles and responsibilities.

c) Access to education/health Project: KORD is annually supporting 200 vulnerable children to access formal education of which 53% are girls. KORD provide them with scholastic material (books, pencils, pens, mathematical sets and sanitary towels for the girl child) and school fees. KORD realized that one of the challenges attributing to the low school retention for girls was the monthly periods as they lacked sanitary towels to use. Giving sanitary towels every term is not sustainable, KORD is thinking of training some school going children, their teachers and some members of community in the art of making sanitary towels from locally available resources. This will make the sanitary towels cheaper and more readily available. In addition, community members can start a small enterprise out of the project thus earning a living from making the sanitary towels.

Supervisor Information: The organization reports to a team of Board of Directors who are 6 in number with a neutral Chairman. The Annual General meeting composed of Outgrowers and Kakira Sugar limited, are at the apex where all report. Management is a small team of 5 headed by a CEO, supported by 2 support staff and various Board committees. The CEO has been the supervisor of all the interns but sometimes delegates the OVC Project Officer for integration of project cross cutting issues.
