Once Upon a Mattress Character Breakdown: Women:

Princess Winnifred the Woebegone (aka Fred): (25-40) Vocal Range - G3-E5, Mezzo-Soprano/Belt. Extensive acting and singing; most of it while on the move. Must have good comic timing; excel at physical comedy; and exemplify the word "energetic." Princess Winnifred is a friendly, down-to-earth, clumsy and extremely likeable tomboy. She has an upbeat attitude, is out-spoken, out-going, gutsy and strong. Fred doesn't give a hoot for the ways of royalty and will not stand on ceremony. She is courageous and outrageous, but she and the meek Prince Dauntless fall for each other almost immediately.

Lady Larken: (18–30) Vocal Range – A3-G5, Soprano. Extensive singing. Able to do simple steps while singing. Young and vulnerable Lady Larken is our damsel-in-distress. She's gentle, trusting, and loyal to the love-of-her-life, Sir Harry. Pregnant with his baby, but not married (as marriage is forbidden), lovely Larken still manages to personify innocence. She is scared and desperate, but courageous, within limits.

Queen Aggravain: (50+) Vocal Range – Ab3-B4, Mezzo Soprano/Alto. An excellent actress who has a stage presence that commands attention; and practically vibrates with negative energy. Has to talk very fast (but clearly) during a long "Mamalogue." Queen Aggravain is the wife of King Sextimus and the mother of Prince Dauntless. Conniving, imperious, bossy and over-bearing, the narcissistic Queen will stop at nothing to get her way.

The Ladies-in-Waiting The Ladies sing and dance and have extensive stage time throughout the show. They are good actresses who stay in character and react with facial expressions and body language as the story unfolds. Must be able to sing while moving and/or dancing; keep time clapping and/or stamping feet to music; and be willing to double as needed. The Ladies are all named, as follows:

Lady Rowena: (40–60) Singer and Dancer with some lines and a lot of stage time. Rowena is the head Lady-in-Waiting. She is the epitome of a stately, courtly Lady and does her best to train the others in her image. This includes giving them her special "look" when their behavior is less than perfect.

Lady Merrill: (25–50) Singer and Dancer with some lines and a lot of stage time. Although stately and courtly most of the time, Lady Merrill can be excitable and has a down-to-earth side that shows up on rare occasions.

Lady Lucille: (20–40) Singer and dancer with some lines and a lot of stage time. Younger and less disciplined than Rowena or Merrill, Lady Lucille doesn't have as good a grip on her emotions and sometimes blurts out what she thinks. She is high-spirited and excitable and may have a nervous tick.

Lady Beatrice–Court Dancer: (25–40) Singer and featured dancer. Must be high energy. Lady Beatrice and her partner, Sir Harold, dance a lively duet and are featured in a production number. She is a stately and courtly Lady-in-Waiting who lights up when performing as Court Dancer.

Lady Mabelle: (20–40) Singer and dancer who doubles as French Lady. Should be a good physical actress – Mabelle changes body language (and costume) from that of a stately Lady-in-Waiting to a sexy French Courtesan and back again.

Princess #12: (18–30) Actress; no singing or dancing. Projects and enunciates well. Young and attractive, Princess #12 is innocent, eager and regal. (Will double in the ensemble).

Nightingale of Samarkand: (16-40) Vocal Range: Gb4-G5 High Soprano – The singer of the court. MEN:

Prince Dauntless the Drab: (25–40) Vocal Range – A2-G4, Baritone/Tenor. Extensive singing. An excellent and energetic actor who has good comic timing. Must excel at physical comedy, including being thrown to the ground several times during one of his featured songs. The son of Queen Aggravain and King Sextimus the Silent, Dauntless is a mama's boy who meekly gives in to his dominating mother's wishes. Although he's likeable, good-natured and bright enough, our poor Prince is socially immature – almost childlike. He's lonely, falls hard for Princess Winnifred, and matures a bit more in every scene after he meets her.

Minstrel: (20–45) Vocal Range - C3-G#4, Tenor. Extensive singing. Comfortable with some physical comedy. Must be able to smoothly segue back and forth from the narrator (who speaks and sings directly to the audience) to a character in the story that relates only to the other characters. He's intelligent, inquisitive and a quick thinker who fits easily into new situations. A doer, not just a reporter, our minstrel is gutsy, has a sense of humor and admires Lady Larken.

Wizard aka Cardamon: (40–60) Does not have to sing but a sense of musical timing is a plus. Dances a little, but not necessarily well. Must be willing to master a few simple magic or sleight-of-hand tricks (training and props will be provided). Ability to impersonate a modern TV quiz show host is a plus. The perfect role for an actor who doesn't sing, the Wizard is the Queen's "advisor". Often imperious and somewhat scary, our Wizard is actually a frustrated magician/showman currently doing a "Wizard gig."

Jester: (20–45) Vocal Range – C3-F4, Tenor/Baritone. Extensive singing and dancing. A high-energy actor with good comic timing who excels at physical comedy and makes the most of his props. Must be able to learn basic dance steps plus a few variations. Ability to do tumbling or acrobatics is a plus, but not a must. Ability to tap dance or do soft shoe is a plus, but not a must. The court comedian, our jester is bold, intelligent, energetic, a quick-thinker and a cool conniver. He's loyal to the mute King and has mastered how to communicate with him and interpret the King to others. Knights, Ladies, and even the King and Prince, frequently follow the charming jester's easy-going leadership.

King Sextimus the Silent: (50+) Lots of stage time, but just a couple lines. Must excel at pantomime, especially over-the-top facial expressions and gestures. Should have good comic timing and enjoy physical comedy. Although the king does not sing, he participates in duets and trios through pantomime, which must be performed precisely on musical cues. A sense of rhythm is a big plus. Mute (because of a curse) until just before the finale, the aptly named King Sextimus communicates his thoughts, feelings and schemes through mime – often resembling a game of charades. An audience favorite, the bawdy King is both lovable and lustful. Although hen-pecked by the Queen, he maintains his good spirits and is a caring father and a loyal, protective friend.

Sir Harry: (25–35ish) Vocal Range - C3-E4, Baritone. Extensive singing. An excellent, energetic actor who enunciates and projects well and carries himself like a leader. Must be able to move while singing and learn simple dance steps. Brave Sir Harry is the highest-ranking Knight in the Kingdom and always gets the job done. He has stately manners and is cocky, career-oriented and somewhat anal; but overall, Harry is a good man. The audience will chuckle at his stuffiness but like him anyway. Sir Harry loves Lady Larken, who is secretly pregnant with his child.

The Knights The Knights sing and dance and have extensive stage time. They must be good actors who stay in character and in the moment; care about the outcome; and react with facial expressions and body language as the story unfolds. Knights will be asked to double as needed. Possible doubling roles include Pantomime characters in the prologue and various castle workers. All Knights should enunciate and project well and carry themselves with pride. Our Knights are named, as follows:

Sir Studley: (25–45) Some lines. Singer and dancer. Sir Studley is next in rank under Sir Harry. A favorite of the Queen, he's pompous in court, but fun-loving behind the Queen's back.

Sir Luce: (25–45ish) A few lines. Singer and dancer. Sir Luce is also stately in court but fun-loving when the Queen isn't looking. He's friends with Sir Studley and Sir Harry.

Sir Harold – Court Dancer - aka 1st Knight (25–45ish). A courtly Knight when not letting loose on the dance floor, Sir Harold is a singer and a featured dancer (with Lady Beatrice) during a production number. They dance an energetic duet.

Ensemble: Various Court/Townspeople (8-80)

All: Everyone in the show, no matter what role he or she plays, will also be a stagehand. Set changes will be "choreographed" and assigned with costume changes in mind. When your character is not in a scene you may also be asked to join with the ensemble.
