C. G. Jung, The Concept of the Collective Unconscious, http://www.bahaistudies.net/asma/The-Concept-of-the-Collective-Unconscious.pdf

Page 100: “Christ himself is ‘twice-born’: through his baptism in the Jordan he was regenerated and reborn from water and spirit.” In my view, this interpretation is too literalist. JC, who didn’t need to be reborn, was merely pointing to the possibility of rebirth for those who would be willing and able to solve the prospective mystery of the cross through discipleship training. So there’s a failure on Jung’s part to grasp the essence of the Gospel. It doesn’t matter how educated one is; to solve the mystery, one has to “submit” to discipleship training, which doesn’t presuppose a relationship of power and subordination but merely a dedication to carefully examine the evidence that Jesus allegedly is God the Father, the trinity concept being wholly unbiblical.

C. G. Jung, Your Negroid and Indian Behavior, http://themeltingpoints.com/uploads/Your_Negroid_and_Indian_BEHAVIOR.pdf

When Jung says “To our subconscious mind contact with primitives recalls not only our childhood, but also our prehistory” and “It would be difficult not to see that the Negro, with his primitive motility, his expressive emotionality, his childlike immediacy, his sense of music and rhythm, his funny and picturesque language, has infected American behavior,” it’s a bit hard to know what to make of it, because of the term “to our subconscious mind.” But the word “infected” seems to suggest that he perhaps had a racial bias, particularly since he doesn’t seem to challenge how our subconscious mind perceives blacks. And the fact that the article is a bit too Eurocentric (“European representatives of the species”) does seems to lend credence to this possibility. Still, he did make very valuable contributions to our understanding of archetypal psychology, but it’s too bad that he failed to apply his archetypal insights to his own racial prejudices if any, since racism is an archetypal reality. In brief, racism and ethnocentric prejudices are a pervasive reality throughout much of the world. But white racism is probably the most dangerous kind given the great power disparities between the white and non-white worlds. Thus there’s a moral responsibility to challenge notions of white supremacy, even if they’re tacit.

Also, pertaining to the last §, it bears stating that Christianity is no less ferocious today. The forms the ferociousness takes are no doubt different today compared with ancient and medieval times, but in terms of the scale and gravity of the criminal violence perpetrated in our time (in this case, the reality of Western state terrorism and economic strangulation courtesy of private power but in no small measure fueled by Christian fundamentalist groups in the US), actually the ferociousness of ancient and medieval times have nothing on contemporary barbarism, even if the usual victims are largely out of sight from the West’s purview.

Michael Parenti, The Logic of U.S. Intervention, http://www.kropfpolisci.com/foreign.policy.parenti.pdf

Don’t think Parenti has his facts straight when it comes to Ethiopia under Mengistu, since his dictatorial regime was quite brutal even while somewhat benefiting the disadvantaged masses through a massive literacy campaign and other limited reforms as well as by putting a cap on wealth acquisition for business people (all of which can be said to be progressive-like, albeit in very relative terms or within definite limits). In other words, Parenti’s view on Ethiopia during that time is neither qualified nor nuanced, since dissidents and even non-dissidents were persecuted during Mengistu’s bloody reign, often with fatal outcomes. I suppose this goes to show that there’s nothing inherently innocuous about a Marxist-Leninist government (which is a bit too charitable, because a strong case can be made that Leninism in particular is an anti-human system that shares some essential features with liberal democratic ideology). It all depends on how the doctrines underlying such a government are interpreted and implemented by certain leaders with certain propensities in the Third World, since there have been some governments with such a leaning who have benefited their people in somewhat significant ways (like in some parts of Latin America, for example) while keeping abuses of power to a minimum, much to the consternation of Uncle Sam, while in others the outcomes have been quite horrible. In Soviet Russia the outcome was disastrous in many respects even while securing at least minimal social and economic security for the masses. But given the fact that hierarchical structures are almost always extremely harmful in humanistic terms, salvation is to be found elsewhere: in anarcho-syndicalist theory and practice, which is sharply at odds with state socialism/Soviet-style communism. Anarcho-syndicalism is not likely to be a perfect system, since imperfections have to be tolerated even under the best of conditions, but it does beat state capitalism and state socialism by orders of magnitude.

But this work has other significant problems, discussed briefly in John Taylor Gatto’s The Underground History of American Education.

I think there’s a need to decode the last paragraph of this article: she implicitly views failure as unwillingness, thereby justifying torture, since intense psychological intervention and pharmacological management are forms of torture. The former may be debatable, depending on the type of therapy used and, crucially, depending on the therapist’s framework and techniques. But the latter claim about pharmaco. mngt is totally uncontroversial.

Douglas Bloch, Living in an Age of Melancholy: When Society Becomes Depressed, http://www.madinamerica.com/2014/06/living-age-melancholy-society-becomes-depressed/

Bloch talks about the failure of parents, schools and businesses to consistently impose natural consequences for unethical behavior. Apart from the fact that you can’t impose something that’s natural, this is a dangerous view, because it’s the failure to provide affectional security and emotional freedom, primarily in the family system and secondarily in schools, that accounts for the lack of ethics that prevails in our societies. He also talks about the need “to directly face the existential meaning of this pathology” called depression. But it’s not a pathology. It’s a natural reaction to oppression or great misfortune or simply to too much stress. What’s pathological is how society reacts to it, or to those who suffer from it. To rectify this problem, we need to turn to the writings of Barry Spector for valuable insights and sensible guidance. The author also says: “People who are depressed describe themselves as disconnected […] from their core selves.” This is not entirely true, because if there is disconnection it has to do with the fact that there’s too much pain in their lives which they understandably shut down by becoming depressed for the sake of short-term survival, arguably (this is a complex issue that requires a long, careful, nuanced and compassionate discussion). Again, Barry’s work is indispensable for understanding the way out of depression in a genuine and sustainable way, since recovery cannot be done solo nor with the help of a therapist for that matter, especially not when complex PTSD is also part of the picture. The solution, in brief, has to be ritualistic/shamanistic and communal.

Sad and disturbing that there’s so much unwarranted faith in neuro-pharmacological agents among mental health professionals. But also that things like addiction are classified as forms of mental illness, in actuality in some cases and prospectively in others, as in the case of obesity, believe it or not. How come such denial of reality, even delusions, don’t qualify as mental “illnesses” or disorders? If they don’t qualify as such, then addictions, extreme mental and emotional states, self-destructive behaviors, etc., should not be medicalized either, for these are social and spiritual problems that can be treated or cured if by treatment or cure we mean getting to root causes as opposed to finding ways to alleviate symptoms. Also, as might be expected from such a work, the question of addiction to power and wealth, which is the worst kind, is conventionally but disgustedly left out of the discussion. This is the “inevitable” outcome of what it means to be highly educated in a formal sense.

In the last paragraph of this article, it’s almost as if the author not only is lamenting the prospect in question but is implicitly calling for Washington to weaken or destroy it. But I’m not suggesting that a Chinese imperial system would be benign or desirable, merely that he would have needed to explicitly state what his position is in regard to this matter, not least by chronicling or highlighting, even if only briefly (or at least referring the reader to reliable sources that document the following), the US’s imperial depredations since at least the end of WWII, and how and why even a countervailing force in international affairs to US power would be desideratum within limits, since the ultimate solution to the world’s many deep crises is not hegemony but an anti-hegemonic agenda across the board. Unless this type of forward-looking perspective is habitually mentioned and emphasized by the libertarian left, the masses will never sustainably grasp the need for thoroughgoing change in the international order, in my view.

There are useful insights in this article, but also significant shortcomings, most notably the fact that the author sees addiction as a medical problem hence as requiring psychiatric attention and intervention. Since he obviously sees nothing inherently wrong with the use of psychotropics beyond the side-effect disadvantages that are assumed to be overshadowed by the supposed benefits of such treatment nor with CBT (cognitive behavior therapy), he’s thereby implicitly demonstrating an authoritarian approach to solving emotional and social problems, which is a self-defeating enterprise and a futile exercise.

Martin Armstrong’s blog: Today’s Turning Point on ECM, http://www.armstrongeconomics.com/armstrong_economics_blog

Welcome to Armstrong Economics, http://www.armstrongeconomics.com/

It’s a shame that Armstrong pushes the notion of “true capitalism” in his writings, because he doesn’t even come close to demonstrating that it can work, or has worked in the past. It’s precisely because “true capitalism” was such a disaster (leading to the Great Depression and other serious problems before that) that the state started to intervene in the economy and in social life so radically since the end of WWII, in order to sustain private power at the expense of the taxpaying middle and lower classes. So what he calls “true capitalism” is totally unviable. But what we have can’t be said to be viable either, since it couldn’t stand on its own feet, or pull its own weight, without massive public subsidies and other forms of artificial support. Still, his cycle theory is interesting.

Bryant Welch, Torture, Psychology, and Daniel Inouye: The True Story Behind Psychology’s Role in Torture, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bryant-welch/torture-psychology-and-da_b_215612.html

Welch says: “Using funding from the Department of Defense he has also launched a campaign for psychologists to be given legal rights to prescribe medications. The torture issue is, of course, quite different.” The way he makes the transition from the first to the second issue, and the fake negative comparison, indicates that he’s not aware about the premise of psychopharmacological treatment. Which is to say, torture, and the most exquisite kind. He also says: “Psychologists are amongst the most moral and ethical people I know.” In my view, this is a very dubious claim. They are no different from any other profoundly indoctrinated and insufferable professional group in moral and ethical terms. For example, projection is central to psychotherapy. And projection, which is crazy-making, is about exercising unaccountable power, hence can reasonably be called a form of “subtle” torture. Also, clinical psychologists tend to be manipulative, have no qualms about using the down- on-the-victim approach, and etc. In other words, they are behaviorists and, as such, are agents not of their clients but of hierarchically organized society, even if there may be some exceptional psychologists who go against the grain, but it would be very surprising if they constitute more than a small minority.

In my view, there are significant flaws in this work (particularly when it comes to the understanding of Jesus’ Gospel teaching and the failure to make a distinction between spiritual and humanistic values; granted that one would expect the two to overlap to a limited extent at least, and they no doubt do; but the extent to which they don't has to do with the inevitable chasm between spirituality and secularism, nothing else, or not much else), but I still think that parts of the book makes for very interesting reading.

Page 2: “…neurogenesis is enhanced […] by some antidepressant treatments.” I think this is a dubious claim given how harmful psychiatric drugs are, generally. Even when they seem to work for a small minority, no one understands how and why they work. So I think the claim ought to be taken with a generous scoop of salt, nay, even rejected. Page 10: “…several disorders […] have to varying degrees a common etiology and are modulated by genetics…” I can accept the former argument, but not the latter (at least not without qualification), in the light of what is known about how it is the environment, even in utero, that shapes our genes (cf. Gabor Mate, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts). The failure to make this distinction almost invariably leads to genetic snobbery: “such people are genetically inferior to the rest of us, so we are justified in mistreating them with impunity,” which is exactly the mindset that generally prevails in the mental health professions.

For more, visit Dr. Carl Hart’s website at http://www.drcarlhart.com/. Hart is insightful, and the data that he conveys seem credible, although one would, of course, need to read his book to be more convinced. But there are problems in his articles: 1) He assumes, like most intellectuals do, that those in positions of power are respected because overall they “mak[e] contributions to this society.” Specifically, he is referring to Bush, Clinton and Obama, but especially the last two. But neither of these Presidents have made any significant contributions to their society. Their modes of operations and their styles were no doubt different, but they all undermined democracy in their own ways by benefiting private power at the expense of the common good, nationally and internationally; they, like all their predecessors during at least the post-UN Charter period, were major thugs (as are many or most of their clients throughout the world, of course); 2) Hart is playing it safe by assuming that there can be significant benefits, but also significant harm, in prescribing licit psychoactive substances. Which is why he hedges himself by saying: “If the risk benefit ratio is favorable I’m all for that child being administered that drug [Adderall Amphetamine] to help control their symptoms.” But it’s known, albeit not widely because of who controls the flow and, less significantly, determines the content of information in our societies (I say less significantly, because there’s no official censorship in the West, even if there is voluntary internalization of unexamined assumptions as well as voluntary subservience to external power), that the symptoms are not caused by any kind of disease of the brain, but have their roots in environmental/psychosocial factors in almost all cases.

There are blunders on pages 257, 261 and 262, because the discussion overlooks the fact that SSRIs, even though he claims that they are effective in treating obsessive thinking in subjects with obsessive-compulsive disorder, are extremely harmful in other respects, so at what cost is this supposed improvement brought about? The author’s faith in pharmacological agents in the context of at least PTSD is unwarranted. And it really isn’t much more than faith, because on p. 262 he says: “Success has been claimed for just about every class of psychoactive medication…” But claiming success is a far cry from proving success in the majority of cases. Peter Breggin has writings that deal with this subject in a satisfactory way, but Withaker’s Anatomy of an Epidemic is the best source when it comes to the serious dangers of neuro- pharmacological agents.

The statement on page 21: “At this time in history … punitive treatment of drug addicts” is not necessarily true, or not always true. Clinton is the most extreme example of a leader who favored punitive treatment of drug addicts over more humane alternatives. But even the Obama Administration’s record is dismal in this respect, if I’m not mistaken. As H.G. Levine states in “Global Drug Prohibition: its uses and crises” at http://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/~hlevine/hglevine-global-drug-prohibition.pdf, “In the US during the 80s and 90s, [despite their mutual animosity towards each other] the [major] parties united to wage the “War on Drugs’. They even competed to enact more punitive anti-drug laws, build more prisons, hire more drug police, expand anti-drug military forces, and fund many more government sponsored anti-drug messages and ‘drug-free’ crusades. Opposing political forces around the world have disagreed about many things, but until recently they have often joined together to fight ‘drugs’.”

On the last page, Cone says: “a Leninist vanguard party is a tribune of the people, which fights against all aspects of social oppression on the basis of an internationalist revolutionary program.” He also says “The Bolsheviks of Lenin and Trotsky were intransigent fighters for women’s liberation as an indispensable part of the fight for the emancipation of the working class from exploitation.” Both statements are patently false! Cf. Chomsky, Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of Propaganda, among other works. In brief, the notion of an American (or any other) workers state is highly dangerous, at least in the long run (that was what Lenin’s vanguard party was thought to be in the beginning, and to a limited extent it was, but look how it turned out, very predictably: it soon crushed the soviets and arrogated all power to its maximal leader and his party, hence honesty dictates that we acknowledge that the Bolshevik revolution was really a counterrevolution). Workers’ Councils without a state or any other concentration of power is the way to go for those who wish to realize substantive freedom.

Since it’s been established that Lubitz was taking neuroleptics, it’s very reasonable to conclude that he was chemically lobotomized. It’s bad enough that this kind of thing happens at all, but the fact that there still seems to be no ban on the use of anti-depressants and other mind-altering psychiatric drugs by all pilots in the US at least, is shocking. What CCHR does in behalf of psychiatric patients (advocating for their rights to say No to ‘coercive treatment’: an oxymoron if there ever was one) should not, in my view, be disparaged on account of its bad reputation in the realm of religion, even if the accusations leveled against it are true. Why? Because most people, including almost all persons assuming institutional roles, are guilty of compartmentalization, which is the curse of our age. And the reason we ought to give CCHR the benefit of the doubt in its worthwhile endeavors (with or without impeccable results) to protect psychiatric patients’ rights is because there’s nothing even in the laws of nature that prevent human beings from acting in socially and morally desirable ways in some contexts even while acting in morally and socially objectionable ways in others. Why we have a notorious capacity for compartmentalization is difficult to address here. But Alisdair MacIntyre appears to have dealt with this issue in a satisfactory way in an article titled “Social Structures and Their Threats to Moral Agency.”

The problem is that not every anarchist is an anarcho-syndicalist but every anarcho-syndicalist is an anarchist. And the two groups have significant differences in spite of their similarities in a number of respects. But I can’t possibly enumerate their similarities and differences here. Links have been shared in the past that address this issue, as is also being done in today’s entry.

To my best knowledge, there’s no such thing as psycho-genetic illnesses unless these are caused by lesions in the brain, which are rare outside the context of biopsychiatric interventions. In other words, it is possible to talk about psycho-genetic illnesses or lesions in the brain in the context of accidental injuries to the head in a number of cases, definitely in the context of psycho-surgery and ECT, and highly likely in the context of chemical therapy, especially in long-term “treatments.”

The fact that student results in terms of grades remain dismal is actually a blessing in disguise. The tacit message is that students are rejecting the system even if they may not fully understand why. If they did, they’d proudly lead a double life by playing dumb in school while being smart and dynamic outside its confines, or simply by rebelling against the whole system en masse in an organized fashion, ideally with the support of their parents.

The author says on p. 8: “A change of antidepressant appeared to make a significant difference to his mental state and he was slowly able to put his life back together again.” It is true that a small number of people appear to be helped not only by antidepressants but also by ECT. But the key word, which even Mitchell revealingly uses is: appear(s). The goal with ECT is brain damage, which is known within psychiatry, though never admitted officially including and especially to the public. And the goal with psychotropic drugs is torture, since no other fate must be even implicitly expected from those who deviate from the norm even if the deviance is not premeditated. To say that some people are helped by such drugs, no matter who says it, can never detract from the fact that these drugs cause chemical imbalances that may or may not have existed prior to medication but which in any case have not been proven to cause depression or other types of emotional and/or mental disorders/disturbances, since people with high, low and normal levels of serotonin become depressed, as studies have shown. Same with dopamine, if I’m not mistaken.

Gatto claims, in chapter 9, that the doomsday scenarios of environmentalists are part of the deliberate creation of crisis by Fabian evolutionary socialists. There may be truth to this to an extent, but we really have to be very careful here because the threat posed by cataclysmic climate change to the prospects of species survival is very real. After all, there are solid scientific grounds for being alarmed about the future that awaits us (very likely within this century) if we don’t reduce CO2 emissions drastically and quickly. If anything, the studies use models that underestimate the severity of prospective threats. Just because scientific models may not be able to make predictions with 100 percent certainty, does that mean that a nonetheless high likelihood or near-certain prediction is thereby worthy of inattention or rejection? The stakes are too high. And global warming is already a reality, as are localized and/or regionalized disasters, which are causing lots of fatalities.

Problem on p. 94: “GI benefits to particular courageous Americans.” I defy West to point out a single US military intervention that was legally and morally justified, ever, but especially during the post-UN Charter period. The point is that given such a basic framework, it’s misleading to talk about courageous Americans. I think the GI bill has been a good thing inasmuch as it was (originally) part and parcel of New Deal measures that benefited disadvantaged groups in American society upon returning from service abroad. And there may have been instances of courage as when one soldier made costly sacrifices for the sake of his fellow soldier(s), or defected (in which case he becomes an enemy of the US forever), but not otherwise. West maybe did not know better, in 1993, than to fail to recognize these facts and fail to make such distinctions. But far more likely than not he does today. Still, I haven’t seen him offer a corrective. But even in his more recent talk titled “Race Matters,” he portrays US foreign policy as being imperialistic but not always. Even during those short periods when there haven’t been wars in which the US has participated, are we to thereby surmise that the empire was on a break? What about economic and cultural imperialisms? These are permanent fixtures of Western foreign policy. Still, great book.

Page 44: Granted that Jefferson was partly a classical liberal, but he was also a slave owner, among other crimes. That hardly qualifies him to talk about virtue with a high degree of credibility despite some useful insights of his which have been documented. Page 46: It’s one thing to protect and support an outward form of social order provided it is genuinely antiauthoritarian. But all forms of government are by definition authoritarian hence are illegitimate by assumption, at least in the last analysis. Thus the ideals of virtue cannot emanate from any form of government, as Wilhelm von Humboldt eloquently showed in The Limits of State Action.
