VOL. 57, NO. 19 DIOCESE OF OAKLAND NOVEMBER 11, 2019 www.catholicvoiceoakland.org Serving the East Bay Catholic Community since 1963 Copyright 2019 Seven little ones join the Body of Christ MICHELE JURICH/THE CATHOLIC VOICE MICHELE JURICH/THE CATHOLIC Richard Denoix, left, and Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ. Bringing the Word of God to sisters, brothers behind bars By Michele Jurich Staff writer While “When I was in prison, you visited me,” from Matthew 25:37 might be the one most cited on prison ministry, Richard Denoix, detention ministry coordinator for the Diocese of Oakland, offered, too, Mark 6:34: “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd he had compassion on them because they were like sheep with- out a shepherd, so he began teaching them many things ”. Denoix, who is in formation to be ordained a deacon of the Diocese of Oakland, said, “A sheep without a shepherd . That’s how we should look at our sisters and brothers in jail . They are so hungry for the Word . Like sheep without a shepherd, they’re lost . “We’re here to bring the Word of God, the message of the Gospel of love and mercy to all, without exception . That’s what we do ”. He looked out on a gathering of about 80 people who serve in detention ministry in the Diocese of Oakland in the Cathedral Parish Hall on Oct . 23 . Among them were Missionaries of Charity Sisters and Dominican, Franciscan and diocesan priests . These men and women are the ones who carry the good news to the incarcerated . In Alameda County, detention ministers serve at Santa Rita Jail and the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin and Juvenile Hall and Camp Sweeney in San Leandro . In Contra Costa County, they serve at John Davis Juvenile Hall and the Martinez Detention Facility in Martinez; the Marsh Creek Detention Facility in Clayton; the West County Detention Facility in Richmond; and the Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Facility in Byron . The conference included presentations on suicide prevention and the effects of trauma . But it centered on meeting the spiritual needs of those they serve . Representatives of ministries at the correctional facilities spoke about the needs of each place . Not all who minister to the incarcerated do it in person . Javier Martinez, who attended the conference, said he and his wife Cristina are part of a ministry at Concord’s Queen of All Saints Parish that writes letters, in Spanish,

By Rev. John Prochaska Special to The Catholic Voice I have now been ministering in the Prelature of Sicuani for 3 .5 years and it has been way too long since I have shared a bit of my experience of my missionary work . Quite often there are articles and advertisements for pilgrimages in The Catholic Voice . I have had the bless- ing and privilege to lead a number of pilgrimages during my priesthood: Holy Land; Footsteps of St . Paul (Greece and Turkey); Italy; Fatima, Lourdes and Spain; and one year ago to the home of Pope Francis (), Lima and Cusco . Spiritual pilgrimages are a blessed opportunity to grow in our relationship with God; to be renewed mind, body and soul; to form a small faith com- munity (even if only for a short time); and to connect with peoples, cultures and histories of other places – those significant and not so significant . Here in the Andes, spiritual pil- grimages are also very important . The people don’t have the thousands of dollars to go to the Holy Land or Europe, but there are many local pil- grimages that they can make to popu- lar sanctuaries in the area: Señor de Huanca, Señor de Qoylloriti, La Virgen de Copacabana and La Virgen JOHN PROCHASKA/SPECIAL TO THE CATHOLIC VOICE THE CATHOLIC TO JOHN PROCHASKA/SPECIAL de Chapi . Social scientists, in research published on Popularresistance .org, dubbed the increased interest of seniors in social issues and community causes a “silver revolution ”. This passion among local seniors to work for social causes and back political issues does not represent new hobby-like endeavors to fill idle time in their lives . Rather, social activism was instilled early on by their parents, and it remained an important priority . “They taught us to have a Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other to reflect on the Gospel message with what was happening in the world,” said Oakland resident Meg Bowerman, 69, recalling her parents’ encouragement . One of her eight siblings had special needs, so her parents were big advocates for mental health . That issue became a VOICE THE SCHOLZ/SPECIAL TO CATHOLIC DAVID special interest to the family .
