Chief Editor's Note

The Evolving Field of Nursing Mei R. Fu, PhD, RN, FAAN Chief Editor

Nursing is an ever‑evolving field, with new innovations in technologies and practices arising every day. In this issue of CANA Global CONNECT, we explore new changes in nursing practices, such as Dr. Jing Jing Shang’s work on home health care; as well the changing demographics of registered nurses through Professor Fidelindo Lim’s article on NYC Men in Nursing. The stellar work by Dr. Shang and Professor Lim highlights the importance of diversity in both nursing practices and personnel. Home health care increases the efficiency of health care services for patients; however, it comes with different risks for patients, such as infection, that must be addressed. Similarly, the growth of male nurses in the workforce is important and necessary to address the diverse needs of patients that nurses encounter every day; however, it also requires male nurses to come together— such as through NYC Men in Nursing—to help its members to overcome the hardships that come with being a minority in the nursing field through mentorship and other community‑building events.

President's Message

Dear CANA members:

Please join us at CANA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 10am to 2:30pm at Confucius Mannings Pharmacy Conference Room (36‑22 Main Street, Flushing, NY 11354). The AGM serves as an opportunity for CANA to inform members of what CANA has accomplished throughout the past year. At the meeting, the committee directors will give reports about their committees. Any changes or amendments to the bylaws and procedures can also be approved by the members at the AGM.

This is also an election year for CANA Executive Board Officers (President, VicePresident, Secretary, and Treasurer). The officers will be elected for a term of two years at the AGM. The Nomination Committee was announced by the Board of CANA at the monthly Board meeting on August 23, 2018. A mass email has already been sent to all CANA members about nominations and election of Executive Board Officers. To be eligible for an Executive Board Officer position, application forms must be submitted by candidates, or other supporting members, to the nomination committee. The candidate with the most votes at the AGM will be eligible to hold the position.

We encourage our members to join the CANA Executive Board and take a leadership role in the association. One of the functions of CANA is to provide opportunities for leadership training, working with a team and enhancing communication skills. CANA provides a platform not only for participation in community services, but also networking with other professional organizations. Please join us at the AGM on October 6, 2018. CANA needs your continued support!

Sincerely

Ada Leung President, CANA

Research Highlights

Infection in the Home Health Care Setting Dr. Jing Jing Shang PhD, RN, OCN Columbia University School of Nursing

The ultimate goal of Dr. Shang’s research is to improve patient outcomes and quality of care through nursing care. Her current research seeks to understand how best to promote quality patient outcomes and improve nursing services in the home health care (HHC) setting.

Infection is prevalent in HHC, the most rapidly growing health care sector. Infection prevention and control is challenging in HHC because of the uncontrolled environment, limited sources for infection control, and intermittent nature of the care. Despite this significance, the research in this area is limited and many of the HHC infection prevention and control guidelines are based on evidence from the hospital setting and/or expert opinion. Dr. Shang’s research inquiry tackles this healthcare issue from a variety of perspectives and makes important clinical and policy relevant contribution.

Our 20th Annual Fundraising Gala was held on Friday, May 11, 2018 at Mudan Banquet Hall in Flushing, , New York. This year, our Outstanding Honorees were Main Street Radiology for Excellence in Community Engagement; Jyming Wang, MD, PC for Lifetime Achievement Award; Mingder Chang, PhD, for Excellence in Community Service; and Sue Ling Lee, RN, MPA for Excellence in Nursing Leadership.

Thank you to Dr. Jyming Wang who performed a Latin ballroom routine with her dancing partner, Mr. Delyan Terziev, at the Gala. Partners in Care Visiting Nurse Service of New York Chinatown

In conjunction with Partners in Care, CANA is holding monthly recruitment events at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York office in Chinatown to help health agencies to recruit Chinese speaking nurses. Due to the rising demand of bilingual health care personnel, it is important that CANA work with other health organizations to fulfill this need in our community.

Volunteering at Health Fairs

CANA volunteers participated health fairs to provide high blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) screening, to promote healthy eating, fall prevention, and mobility assessment. Our volunteers can speak Mandarin, and other dialects. By volunteering in health fairs, our volunteers helped attendees to understand health information, thus improving compliance. So far, CANA volunteers have participated health fairs in Queens, , Brooklyn, and New Jersey, with more health fairs scheduled in next two months.
