[email protected] 9 Article type: Progressions 10 Abstract length: 164 words 11 Main text length: 3073 12 1 13 Abstract 14 The term “salience network” refers to a suite of brain regions whose cortical hubs are the anterior 15 cingulate and ventral anterior insular (i.e. frontoinsular) cortices. This network, which also includes 16 nodes in the amygdala, hypothalamus, ventral striatum, thalamus, and specific brainstem nuclei, co- 17 activates in response to diverse experimental tasks and conditions, suggesting a domain-general 18 function. In the 12 years since its initial description, the salience network has been extensively studied, 19 using diverse methods, concepts, and mammalian species, including healthy and diseased humans 20 across the lifespan.
