See the additional information elsewhere on our website (volunteer and boat sign- up forms) and in the Foghorn. At this point we expect about 60 vets and family to join us for a “Day on the Bay” on sail and power boats offered by PYC and NYCP members for the enjoyment of these Wounded Veterans. The previously postponed Navy Cup from June will be held September 14-15 at Bayou Grande Marina. This is a Club competition and we have the largest participation from PYC, PBYC and Navy in the past few years. Saturday (14th) will be the PHRF (larger sailboats) competition on Pensacola Bay with the small boat (One-Design) competition on Sunday starting at Noon on Bayou Grande. The Sunday races can be easily viewed from inside our clubhouse (Crow’s Nest) or the surrounding balcony. Come out and enjoy an afternoon. Thanks to all the competitors and Race Committee members for being a part of this grand tradition in Pensacola. I want to give you a heads-up on the end-of-year Commodores Ball on December 4th (Wednesday). This year we will be holding the Ball at the Hilton Garden Inn-Airport/Medical Center. We hope you will reserve the date and plan to attend. The banquet food will be extra special and their Ballroom will be decorated for the holidays and provide a perfect, intimate setting for our celebration. Cost will be same as previous years. Full details will be published next month with invites going out in early November. Take care and enjoy life. It is worth it! See you soon at the Crow’s Nest.

GALLEY BITES By Julie Connerley

NYCP's "chefs" are great company at the monthly meetings, regardless of whether they have cooked something to share with others, or, as is sometimes the case, picked up something from a local restaurant. This month we are highlighting the House of Chong--a Westside Pensacola institution which opened in 1961. Rick and Joanne Cherberg have enjoyed House of Chong for years, and as Joanne explained, "A while back, someone posted the recipe for House of Chong's famous Cashew Chicken on the internet-- but why cook?" The Cashew Chicken was, as expected, a huge success at a recent meeting. Thanks guys. Most of us have the best intentions, but sometimes life gets in the way. If you find yourself running late to the meeting, take a cue from Rick and Joanne. Call in a "to go" order from one of Pensacola's many great eating establishments! Bon appétit!

Where in the W rld is the NYCP Burgee?

This is a variation of the “Where’s Waldo” drawings that were popular several years ago. Basically, members of the club can submit pictures - to the Foghorn Editor or an NYCP board member - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club events. Each month the picture(s) submitted will be published in the Foghorn and selection of the pictures which are unique and of interest to the club members will be in the running for an award at the end of the year. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate.

Iva Prosser and the Navy Yacht Club burgee at Lake Arrowhead, San Diego, CA

We are taking the Club burgee on the 1,000 water miles Triangle Loop of historic New York and Canadian canals on our 28 ft pilothouse trailer boat "Cat O' Mine". We launched on the mid Erie canal, cruised north up the Oswego river and 7 locks, across Lake Ontario at 26 MPH into the Thousand Islands. Entered Canada at Kingston, the start of the Rideau canal with 49 locks with hand-cranked gates and valves up to the Flight of Eight locks in downtown Ottawa, Ontario into the Ottawa River. And 2 locks. That eventually leads to Montreal, Quebec, where we had to remove the radar dome to Coquina as she was decorated for Husband's Celebration enter the 186 year old Lachine canal with an 8 foot air of Life. The burgees hanging from mast to boom are height limit, 5 foot draft limit, through the city and 5 from yacht clubs, local, national and international we've locks into the St Lawrence Seaway shipping channel with visited...and the signal flags spell out HUSBAND across all the ocean-going ship wakes for 45 miles (sporting!). the front of the boat – Julie Connerley. Sorel marks the start of the Richelieu River and canal system and 2 more locks. The Chambly canal and 9 locks bypasses some rapids on the Richelieu and leads into northern beautiful Lake Champlain and the US border. The south end of Lake Champlain leads into the Champlain canal with 11 locks and joins the Hudson River, which eventually leads back to the east entry of the Erie Canal at Mile 0. We put in at mile 160. Tonight, we’re at mile 25 on the Champlain canal, 800 water miles and 30 days and nights onboard so far. The Erie canal has another 35 locks, plus we have a lock on the aft cabin door, but we hardly ever use it. Sailboats can sail up the ICW into the Hudson River and do variations on the loop; many marinas here specialize in mast stepping. You can see our AIS ‘Cat O’ Mine’ transmission signal on the map on www.Marinetraffic.com. Marina and free WiFi doesn’t usually have the bandwidth to upload pics, but we will when we have it. This Club burgee may be a bit scruffy with all the lock rubbing and wind by the time we get back, so we were hoping for a 20% discount if we need to replace it.
