Salute to Elvis!

2011/12 The Thirties & Forties May '13 Official magazine of The Cadillac La Salle Club of NZ [Inc] formed 1973 write to the editor - [email protected]

or those of us that are Elvis affectionos, a replica pink ‘56 Caddy is a sight to behold, especially when the example has been painstakingly and lovinglyF re-created over nearly a decade. Hawkes Bay CLCNZ member, Brian Pascoe had a dream. His inspiration in the form of an image of Elvis standing alongside his ‘all pink’ mid fifties Caddy, right down to the black and white ‘hounds-tooth’ (chequered pattern) upholstery - attention to detail is high. I have seen a number of great Cadillac examples here in NZ and this would be by far, one of our clubs very, very best. Well done Brian and Colleen - it’s a real credit to you both and deservedly appear on this months cover! Let’s hope we can see you and you ‘56 at the 40th! each Hop (‘BH’) 2013 continues to build on the solid success it has enjoyed since year 2000. The 13th, was no less big, brilliant and we all basked in the later summer sun. The weather was marvellous and for five days one couldB be forgiven for thinking we were well into the first month of autumn enjoying blue skies and mid 20s every day. I counted BH car sticker numbers over 1100 and on the Saturday, they reckon there was in excess of 100,000 people in town. That could well be accurate - the crowds were simply huge all day and into the night. The funny thing that intrigued me was the number of more senior folk (older than me of course) in their 60s; 70s and some in their 80s rockin’ and rollin’ well into the night and out-numbering the teenagers at 10 to 1 - i counted! Old rock n’rollers never die, they attend beach hop! ur picture at the top of this page this month is ‘Beach Hop on a platter’ (or could it be The Platters?) ust in on the email is the news that YOUR NZ club magazine, FINZ has won another ‘Old Cars’ “Golden Quill” O - how grand and well done my fellow members and all those overseas CLC members who have contributed to FINZ inJ the past and hopefully will continue into the future! s the winter months grow closer, take note our Sky-TV medium is launching a new Channel ‘13’ at 1300 hours on May 13th! It’s called the ‘Jones’ (can someone email me and let me know the connection). It is entirely made up ofA old TV series, all those that were a ‘blast from the past’- like Bonanza; Star Trek; Dad’s Army; Open All Hours; Happy Days; Kojak; The Sweeney; The Beverley Hillbillies; Mork and Mindy; The Thunderbirds and more. Should be cool! s i close for this month, I am working on next months issue already (in my mind) and let me just say it will be “great” Aastly - if anyone from down under is going to the Grand Nats in Boston, please let me know. I’d love to speak with you about your plans and maybe you can do a story for me? Just email me at: [email protected] and i willL ring you. Ok, thats it for this month. Us BOP members are going to the ‘drive-in movie’ of ‘Grease’ in a few days time, i’ll report back on our night out. Until next month, cruise safe ~ Ron.

Celebrating our 40th Anniversary in 2013!

2 cadillacclubofnz.org Beach Hop 2013 at the beach in , NZ Over summer, NZ serves up a great menu of big car events to attend. Kumeu Car Festival in January; Concours de’Elegance in February (both in Auckland); Beach Hop in March - not forgetting the bi-Annual ‘AmeriCARna’ in New Plymouth - next will be 2014. One of the biggest is ‘Beach Hop’ drawing Kiwis from all parts of NZ including the ‘deep south’; Australia and even the USA. This year, the event # 13th, attracted over 1100 entrants and said to be over 100,000 people attending the main Saturday event. It was literally ‘bumper-to-bumper’ old cars and ‘shoulder- to-shoulder’ entrants and spectators. A group of us BOP members went along and had a great time. Read about what we got up to and drool over the many, many cool cars and characters that make Beach Hop, tops! ..ed

The ‘Hop’ runs Wed thru Sun. Day one is at the old gold-mining town of Waihi. The building to the far left is a historic 1800s mining pump house. It has not only been moved several hundred metres from a previous site (in one piece) but is now a ‘sound shell’ of sorts, echoing fab rock music from ‘Tim & The Rockets’. Local school children danced and even some colourful rock n’ roll dancers got into the act! Pic at far right is the ‘Martha Gold mine’ - still in business and making money or should that be ‘mining money!’ - ed

American iron as far as the eye can see. Some parked alongside the mine itself. Nice Mopar, Ford, Buick, Caddies and T-birds - many in mint condition

The Fairlane above was ‘oh so pretty’ and colours really suited it. Amazing black ‘57 Bel Air. Mint ‘65 Impala rag top. CLCNZ member, Gloria from the BOP wearing colour matching flowery dress to co-ordinate with partner (and CLCNZ member) Ted William’s early 50s Buick with modern running gear and interior. Ted, an upholsterer by trade, created an ‘vinyl LP record hand-bag’. From the enquiries, he could sell a few!

Lavender Impala was a nice example. Gorgeous black mid-50s Fairlane. CLCNZ member, Neville Carter’s mandarin-orange ‘65 Caddy whilst ‘61 was lowered and loaded. Your ed loved the black ‘63 Galaxie, both it and the ‘66 Impala were superb examples. More pics follow....>>>

3 cadillacclubofnz.org Beach Hop 2013 at the beach in Whangamata, NZ

Not often you see 3 AMX Javelins. Big Bad orange; red/ white and blue and Big Bad green examples. Mercury treats above and below

Here’s that Galaxie - wow! Look at the crowd in Waihi town. Now here’s a rarity, ‘65 Rambler Marlin - great order too.

All around there are 50s Pontiacs, Mercs and Chevs - most in mint order and period colours - glorious! To the right, BOP members Kevin and Christine Condor’s lovely ‘61 alongside BOP Delegate, Steve Gill’s ‘65 affectionally known as ‘Black Betty!’

Here’s our own “Sam Hunt” - a man with a way with his words and always, a ‘pen at the ready!’ - ed. Beach Hop, it was a date on the calendar. The time arrived to participate in it, which we did. Now we have arrived back home from it. The next best thing is to write about it. Cruised into Whangamata 5.30 pm. You could feel the town just starting to come alive with the build up of people, cars, caravans, hot rods, trucks and bikes that make up the exciting beach hop scene. The Lincoln [once known as the Corvette] - a quiet watering hole, at this stage, to quench ones thirst after a pleasant drive. Meeting up with a few early birds, from our BOP club and making plans for this awesome event. Accommodation is a rented condo right opposite the Whangamata club. A big thanks to those club members who thoughtfully arranged our grouse digs for the beach hop. Wednesday morning and its group up time to cruise to the Waihi scene. Five hundred classic vehicle’s squeeze into the main street of Waihi, it’s enough to make your eyes water. A pure wonder land of the most magnificent toys from earlier times. Being a lover of Caddies there was one in particular that stood out. Brian Pascal’s pink 1958 Coupe deVille. This gentleman is a true enthusiast along with a long list of others, of being well gifted in the art of restoration and breathing life into these items of beauty. Of course there are many more outstanding Caddies that come to mind like Kevin Cottons “Taupo 1” a red 1952 Caddie convertible. That’s to name but a few in communality that are in alignment with these classics. In Waihi the judges have their own point of view of what represents a splendid example of fine workmanship in car restoration. Prizes going to a white 1957 Olds 3rd prize a 1949 Ford Mercury 2nd prize and 1st prize an orange 1953 Studebaker. Hot rods 3rd prize 1931 Willys, 2nd 1936 Morris and 1st prize a yellow 1947 jail bar. I’m sure we all have our own point of view as to what makes up a winner. Also on display are the beach hop vehicle’s to win and bid, along with a 1956 Thunderbird from classic car insurance. All you have to do is win, win, and win. Well girls and boys that’s the first day done and dusted. Stay tuned for further stories on beach hop coming your way soon. Day 2 and it’s the Coromandel. A bright sunny day with a good grouping up of Caddies. Thames is in our destination with its Kiwiana sights to delight us. We get to see a lot of country side while we cruise in this beautiful place we call” ” There’s more to beach hop than good looking machines. The other thing that springs to mind is the broader perspective of alignment in the joy people receive whilst participating in these events. The town of Thames is a buzz with its own unique energy. Pepper Tree cafe and restaurant is a welcome stop over for lunch. Everyone’s feed and watered as we make our way to Coroglenn Pub. When it comes to hot afternoons cold beer does it for me and this pub delivers nicely. >>continued>>

Scenic cruise. Gas station man in Coromandel township was happy to see two thirsty Caddies at an ‘eye-watering’ $2.39.9 a litre! BOP members gather in down-town Coromandel. Nice Lincoln at pub. Caddies look great at any angle

4 cadillacclubofnz.org The bigger pics are the Editors choice of cars. Favs include Mopar; Pontiac; Ford - each one immaculate and ‘as if’ they were just driven off the movie set of ‘Peggy Sue gets married’- ed Ed’s favourites was this ‘beyond words’ ‘57 Plymouth Fury. Super incredible attention to detail, right down to the record player. Look Beach Hop 2013 at these ‘as new’ door panels. A Fab Ford complete with ‘Bumble-bee’ at top of aerial! And one heck-of-a Pontiac Bonneville in all at the beach in Whangamata, NZ its awesomeness - what a great ‘hop!’ - ed

Day 3 brings us to Onemana Beach. There is an ocean of cars by the ocean. The sun is shinning again and the Beach Hop organises are happy with that. Bands are playing music that’s pleasing to the ear. Then there is the Woodstock Thunder sound offs. I thought the bands had plenty of volume. When the sound off cars fire up they catch every ones attention. Straight away one can hear why they call it Woodstock Thunder.!! The big thunder prize went to the West Australian gentleman” Mr. John Turnham”. The beast that roared was a 1940 Willies drag car/ road car. This machine dose the quarter mile in the 10 sec bracket at the nostalgia drags. >>Continued>>

Saturday 6th April. 6 Caddies and one 1965 Chevy Impala left the Naki and headed for the King country for the great N Z sheep muster and sheep race down the main street of Te Kuiti. Met at 9am and was raining so just sat in our cars until all arrived. Set out from 3a corner to Mokau and the hellos were said over a cup of coffee and scones, the cars looking great parked in a row outside the cafe. Then onto Te Kuiti arriving in town Main Street closed and where to park 7 nice shinny cars, then spotted a club car park and they were more than happy for us to park there for a few hours whilst in town. A leisurely walk up the main street where there was a hundred or so stalls set up all selling their handcrafts, food plants etc., there was also bag pipes playing; rock n roll bands, clowns and a heap of entertainment for all to enjoy. Then at 1215pm right on time a steam train from Glenbrook vintage railway rolled into town, the engine was Jessica made in 1946 with 8 or so carriages on behind filled with Jaffas and other passengers from the north. At 2 pm the sheep race down the main street was on and some 1208 sheep raced past I know I counted them. Then we met back at the club and had a couple of lemonades before heading back to the Naki, stopping at the berry farm for a real fruit ice-cream - this was a treat. So a great day out had by all. The cars all looked great and all made it home safe and sound. By Brian Gillett. Thanks Brian - great coverage - ed.

Hi Ron. We have started to receive registrations and I will give a numbers update next month. Our President/ Treasurer is investigating a ‘PayPal’ facility for overseas members payments and he will notify me and Ron on how this goes. If you encounter any difficulties with your Sudima bookings, email me and I am only too happy to help.

As time goes on, we will be providing a ‘Tour menu’ that hopefully will whet your appetite with all the best the Bay of Plenty region has on offer from the sandy shores of Mount Manuganui to the mountain shores of the great Lake Taupo and lots of forestry beauty in between. We have some of the loveliest NZ landscapes right here in the Bay of Plenty and it should be green-as at the time of year we are planning to enjoy our 40th, so make sure you have plenty of room on your digital camera’s SD card! My Bay of Plenty members and me had some really fun times at the Beach Hop last month. Lots of laughs, and great cruising through some lovely countryside - all good practice for the 40th! I am sure my fellow BOP members will join me in congratulating Sonja and Blair Mead for organising and distributing a ‘sample’ 40th Anniversary t-shirt. As you maybe able to see in the pic, it is a dark grey with our 40th logo on the front chest and a ‘53 Caddy on the back with a New Zealand motif theme on the perimeter. How much do we owe you guys? If you like the look of these shirts, drop me a line so we can guage interest and we’ll look at printing a limited run to sell on a ‘placed-order basis’. That’s it for now - send me any questions or feedback to my email address. Regards – Steve Gill, Event Director [and Bay of Plenty Area Delegate] - 40th CLCNZ Celebrations

We recommed you attend these 3 big global events: 1] CLCNZ 40th Anniversary 2013. 2] CLC Grand European 2013. 3] ‘The 2014 Cadillac LaSalle Australian Nationals’ (held in WA, Aust) 6 cadillacclubofnz.org Beach Hop 2013 at the beach in Whangamata, NZ

These guys above were the ‘coolest cats’ at the hop! With name tags we said hello to the likes of ‘Sky; River; Wind and so on...!’ Left, nice V8 in immaculate ‘Allard’. American iron as far as the eyes can see - even a few ‘colour-co-ordinated caravans’ in tow!

Day 4 Cruise time again up to the main street of Whangamata. The crowd this year had an estimated number 100,000 people. This is a sight you don’t every day of the week. Parking up is one thing walking around is another. Mind you it’s part of the hop in all its awesomeness. A 1965 Ford Falcon Ranchero Ute was the prize of the day given away by the hop promoter’s. As night time sets in the Elvis impersonators are in full swing. Brian Childs is an impressive Elvis entertainer with his signing and dancing on the table tops of a local bar. Much to every ones approval and delight.

Day 5 starts with a band playing good listening music at the domain. A big stage announcement for the winners of the 1965 Ford Falcon Futura and a 1960 Road haven Caravan. There’s always going to be winners of prizes on the day. People who could have claimed a prize on the day, and the people looking forward to claiming a prize another day. It’s all part of our famous NZ Beach Hop.

Well that’s the Beach Hop Round Up for another year. Have a good one Caddie Cruisers. As Always Our Club Is Easily Satisfied With The Very Best. Cheers Steve.

Buicks; Dodges; Olds - even a Jensen Intercepter with a Mopar V8 Todd & Kim Wylie’s ‘bluer than blue’ Cad. Amazing ‘50 Caddy done in grape; look at this maroon Olds, whiter than white Ranchero. Plexi-top Sun Valley and Kiwi-home-made ‘cab-over’

7 cadillacclubofnz.org Beach Hop 2013 at the beach in Whangamata, NZ

The great thing about being in the BOP region is the amount of laughs we have, seemingly where-ever we go. No different at Beach hop. Some of these pics depict what we got up to like: >BOP Delegate, Steve Gill thinks he may have had one too many lemonades. So he walks over to a parked Police car and tells them of his concerns - they measure his breath limit and yep, ‘no driving for you tonight son!’ (not to worry, the ladies drive us down town!). Whangamata comes alive at night: > the actively mobile (and motorised) ‘lounge couch’ cruised down the main street! > On Sunday, hundreds of Beach Hop-pers were up early to attend the annual ‘Rock n’Roll’ church service. Our ‘rock n’ roll reverand’ was a pretty cool dude in his leather jacket; rugged-look and longish hair. There was rock n’roll dancing; religious rock n’ roll songs, all that was missing was Elvis’ gospel singers! No really, the service was great. And yes, they put around the ‘collection hat’ at the end and the number of $50 notes that were dropped was amazing. There was old fashioned candy-floss and even ‘diner-style roller skate girls’ all in the true American style. If you missed this years service, attendance at next years is strongly recommended! And later in the day, more prize-giving and peoples choice was no other than a high-dollar resto of a ‘59 Caddy - what a way to finish the Hop! > More great car pics, more great examples of Oldsmobile; Studebaker, T-bird; Caddy. I hope you have enjoyed the coverage...ed

There were some lovely examples at the ‘Hop’. This rare 3-window Olds was especiallly striking in white with red stripe and red interior. The wide-whitewalls on chrome moonies made for a subtle ‘50s GM package

HAWKES BAY - A year or maybe even three ago when us BOP members toured via the East coast of NZ enroute to the AmeriCARna held in Wellington; we popped in on Brian Pascoe to say hello and check out his 8+ year “work-in-progress” , a ‘56 pink ‘Elvis-copy Caddy’ inspired by an Elvis poster on Brian’s garage wall! At that time the Caddy was about 75% complete with the front clip and interior to go. At the time we saw it, it was already a ‘work of art’ and big on attention to detail.

Here and now, Brian and lovely wife Colleen attend the Beach Hop. The Caddy catches more than a few eyes as its gorgeous pink paintwork dazzle in the Waihi sunshine. On to Whangamata and Brian and Colleen are handsomely dressed as the King and Queen (of screen - Marilyn Monroe) and posing alongside Elvis’ Caddy. With any luck, Brian, Colleen and their Caddy will be at the 40th. It is indeed a sight to behold and received the ‘Peoples Choice Award’ at the 2013 Kumeu Car Festival in West Auckland in January this year. Well done guys - examples like this certainly make our club proud. ed

As the plate says ‘4EVR COOL’ - that’s Elvis and this replica ‘56 Caddy, meticulously created over nearly a decade by CLC NZ member Brian Pascoe of the Hawkes Bay. It’s first outing was at the “locally famous” Kumeu Car Festival in West Auckland, January 2013 where it won ‘People’s Choice’. Brian, a BIG Elvis fan alwyas wanted to re-create El’s famous first pink Caddy and used a large poster (he still has on his workshop wall) as an inspiration. Well now it’s finished and within the NZ club must be argubly one of our finest member’s cars. Not that I am biased - being a BIG EP fan myself...thank you very much...Brian. [ed]

Greg Childs was a great Elvis impersonator - dancing on the tables!

Thanks to the Valley Forge Region and their ‘Godness’ magazine for the use of the neon 12 Caddy sign - what a blast! ed cadillacclubofnz.org News and Stories from around our Regions & Globally

Bare-foot bowls!

Hi Ron. After weeks of wet weather Sunday April 14th was a cloudless hot day. Perfect for the April social event for the Queensland club members who played barefoot bowls at the Gallopers Bowls Club on Brisbane’s north side. The Cadillac’s lined up in the car park looked on and enjoyed their day out. Most members had never played bowls so for this reason a lot of bowls went astray into other team’s rinks or off the green altogether leaving the jack alone or with few bowls around it. Then there was the sorting as to which bowls belonged to whom. The children played also – fun for all. Injury occurred to one player. Phillipa pulled up with a hamstring strain, but bowled on regardless to support her team mate to ensure a fine finish. Despite the humourous start the members improved well to finish the session with most bowls in their own rinks and close to the jack. Then it was inside to enjoy great food from the restaurant and catching up with each other. A lovely time thanks to the Pauline and Brian. As desktop publishing became more sophisticated, so did club magazines and newsletters. Quite a number of national publications have reached such high quality that they could compete on the magazine rack of a bookstore. Those publications would be right at home besides news and features magazines. That’s how far our old car hobby has come in publishing. Some national clubs pay professional editors.”

So New Zealand members, pat yourselves on the back for supporting your own magazine with great articles and great pictures. If this inspires you, take a few moments to email me an article of your Caddy or event you have attended recently. Don’t leave it up to your regional delegate to attend to, take the ‘bull by the horns’ (even if they are on your Caddy!) and do something today!
