KING COUNTY SYSTEM FOUNDATION LITERACY • LEARNING • 2012 ANNUAL REPORT King County Library System Foundation 2012 Annual Report I grew up in the library. With my mother leading me by the hand up the stairs of our local library, I discovered an array of books that were patiently waiting for me to check out. Later, the nudged, nurtured and fueled my early love of reading, sending me home with stacks of books to stretch my mind and my imagination. In high school, I landed a job as a page, shelving books at the same library, where I later held numerous jobs before heading to library school. Now, decades later, I look back on the numerous enhancements in library service and ahead to the incredible opportunities for coming generations. Today, more than ever before, libraries are vital to our children’s future. Our learning landscape presents new sets of challenges for students, parents and teachers. Libraries play an important role in the education eco-system by offering abundant opportunities for children to make discoveries, deepen common interests, solve problems, expand knowledge and connect their natural curiosity to the wider world. Working together with schools and community organizations, we can leverage our library’s year-round learning environment to best serve the educational needs in our community. With your generous support, the KCLS Foundation is helping our library to grow young minds and to ignite learning.

Jeanne Thorsen Executive Directorr

KCLS was honored to receive awards for libraries and services, including: Outstanding Civic Organization, Municipal League Take Time to READ, Top Innovators Award, Urban Libraries Council Take Time to READ, Public Relations Award Kenmore Library, AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Citation Award for Design Excellence Kenmore Library, AIA Washington Council, Civic Design Merit Award Woodmont Library, AIA Washington Council, Civic Design Merit Award

1 LIBRARIES TRANSFORM LIVES Our libraries provide countless opportunities for our family, friends, colleagues and neighbors to access vital resources that enhance and change our lives. Libraries are wondrous places to visit, to explore the abundant array of resources, and to log on and access information. We can do research, launch new projects and businesses, chart new career paths and find information to help us find our way in these challenging times. The King County Library System Foundation creates opportunities to bring literacy, learning and library access to all members of our community. The KCLS Foundation provides the funding for library initiatives that address community needs, supports value-added programs and resources and helps ensure that our public library system is vibrant, relevant and central in the lives of residents. Each year, more than 200,000 children and adults participate in and benefit from KCLS Foundation-supported programs.

2 Literacy: Encouraging Readers of All Ages Literacy is the entry ticket to society, culture and quality of life. These programs provide opportunities to enhance literacy for young children. Reading to and with young children is one of the most effective ways parents can support their children’s brain development and early learning skills. The KCLS Foundation continued to support Fiestas de Alfabetización Temprana en Español, providing early literacy training to Spanish-speaking parents. Fiestas involved 2,713 parents and children in the series of workshops. The KCLS Foundation funded 1,345 books for the children. Over the past six years, more than 10,000 parents and children have participated in the Fiestas workshops and 85% of the respondents note increased reading time at home and greater use of library resources. Facilitators led Play and Learn groups featuring Early Literacy activities for children and their parents or caregivers. Woodmont, Foster and Kent Libraries hosted 115 sessions that involved 2,640 participants. You Choose the Next Newbery is a literature-based program that encourages school-age children to read, evaluate, blog and talk about their favorite books of the year, and then vote for a KCLS winner. The KCLS Foundation purchased books for class teams, which involved 378 students in 15 classrooms and 35 adults. The Foundation also provided funding for the final program, which involved more than 100 participants who debated and voted for their choice of KCLS Newbery winner. Students selected The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate, which was also the real Newbery winning title. The KCLS Foundation provided support for the Books for Babies program. Public health nurses and health department staff members delivered 2,300 board books in 7 languages plus early literacy DVDs and reading tips to new mothers in low income areas of the library’s service district. The KCLS Foundation provided funding for 200 Stories2Go! kits on 4 Library2Go! vans. The majority of the visits were to in-home day care centers, offering caregivers and young children easy and consistent access to fun and interactive multi-media kits featuring picture books, music and puppets on various topics (animals, numbers, etc.) for learning and enjoyment.

3 Learning: Enhancing the Pursuit of Knowledge These programs motivate the improvement of reading and comprehension skills and encourage the pursuit of knowledge for practical purposes and for the joy of learning. The popular Summer Reading Program–Dream Big, READ!–attracted 38,031 young readers and awarded 29,507 halfway prizes plus 24,365 final prizes for participants who reached their 1,000 minute goal. In addition to general support, the KCLS Foundation funded buses to bring 3,752 summer school students to libraries for summer reading programs and activities. Reading skills are vital to academic achievement, especially in the early grades. Ready, Set, Read! challenges kids to set goals and establish the reading habit. Eighteen school districts promote the program in elementary grades. In 2011-2012, the KCLS Foundation provided 14,431 books to students who completed their 400-minute goal. Coming Soon! Summer Reading Begins The Global Reading Challenge combines great books and quiz questions in fun and fast-paced contests. June 1 The competition involved 1,904 4th and 5th grade students of all reading levels on 272 teams from 53 schools in 13 school districts. The KCLS Foundation provides books for all team members. Students seeking help with homework can visit Study Zones in 35 KCLS libraries. In 2011-2012, 380 volunteers contributed 14,010 hours and tutored 10,479 students in Math, Science, Social Studies Reading and English. This is the largest volunteer tutor homework help program in any library in the United States. The KCLS Foundation funded 4 SAT Prep Classes and workbooks for 88 students in low-income areas. In 2012, 3,758 teens read 11,274 books in the Read 3, Get 1 Free program, offered January–August. For each set of 3 reviews, a teen selected a free book as a reward. The KCLS Foundation also hosted a red carpet event and provided prizes for the Read • Film • Win. contest, where teens filmed book reviews and trailers. Global Reading Challenge winners, The Lightning Readers, Grand Ridge Elementary School, Issaquah School District, and their teachers.

4 Libraries: Reaching Out, Enhancing Access Outreach programs bring in visitors, many of whom are experiencing a library for the first time. These programs enhance the patron experience and encourage repeat visits. KCLS Foundation and King County Library System continued with Year Two of Take Time to READ, a three-year initiative to help adults encounter reading opportunities and materials in unexpected places. Quick Reads Shelves were placed in 39 hospitals, social service agencies and numerous community venues and stocked with materials. Thousands of residents enjoyed 266 4’ x 6’ Book Cover Posters in 14 communities. Gift of Time cards were distributed at reading events. Ads on Metro buses and KCLS shipping trucks and in Seattle Met Magazine encouraged residents to read. Radio spots featured Seattle Mariners players talking about favorite books on ESPN. New in 2012: Quick Reads Shelves and Chairs were placed on Concourse B and visited by thousands of travelers at the SeaTac Airport.

Take Time to READ garnered national awards and attention: Urban Libraries Council award as a Top Innovator in positioning the library for promoting recreational reading and American Library Association, American Libraries Magazine and EBSCO Publishing presented the for outstanding strategic communication.

5 The KCLS Foundation welcomed more than 1,000 visitors to special events following remodeling at the Auburn and Enumclaw Libraries and to preview parties for the new Newcastle and Duvall Libraries. The KCLS Foundation provided workbooks for Literacy Toward Citizenship class participants. Five hundred class sessions were presented to more than 2,750 immigrants seeking preparation for the U.S. Naturalization test. The KCLS Foundation presented awards to members of the Friends of the Library groups and hosted 140 guests at the library’s annual Friends of the Library recognition event. The KCLS Foundation sees significant value in encouraging a new generation of librarians who will serve our community in the decades ahead. The KCLS Foundation provided 5 scholarships for KCLS staff members seeking their masters’ degrees in library and information science. Friend of the Year, Penny Humphrey, center, Friends of the North Bend Library, with KCLS Trustee, Robin McClelland, KCLS Director Bill Ptacek, and Library Manager Irene Wickstrom.

The KCLS Foundation’s annual Literary Lions Gala, held at the Grand Hyatt in Bellevue, welcomed 500 guests and featured speaker and best-selling author Lee Child, emcee Nancy Pearl and 30 popular and award- winning local authors. Author Salons were popular events for writers and guests. These gatherings are hosted in homes and popular venues and bring together writers and readers for great food and conversation.

6 Community Mosaic CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR NEW TUKWILA LIBRARY The KCLS Foundation launched a campaign to raise $1 million to create a Community Mosaic– a performance space, gathering place, community living room and learning hub–in the new Tukwila Library. Known as the Ellis Island of the Northwest and home to the most diverse school district in the United States, Tukwila is a unique international community. The Community Mosaic open space will be a stage for cultural programs, site for technology training and venue for civic gatherings, festivals and numerous activities.

The Library System has the funding to build an 8,000 square foot library on the Tukwila Village site at the corner of S 144th Street and Tukwila International Boulevard. The KCLS Foundation Board of Directors enthusiastically committed to raising $1million for the Community Mosaic space, which will expand the building to a total of 10,000 square feet. The new building will replace the small, busy and very crowded Foster Library. This is an extraordinary opportunity to create a Community Mosaic–a welcoming space to inspire all residents to discover new ideas, find vital resources, expand learning and connect with neighbors. We are grateful to The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, an early supporter of this project with a $100,000 grant awarded for the Community Mosaic project. For more information, including naming opportunities, contact Cindy Sharek, Director of Major and Planned Gifts, in the KCLS Foundation office. Watch a video and learn more about the project at www.kclsfoundation.org/tukwila.

7 Leave A Legacy You can transform lives by leaving a legacy for literacy, learning and libraries by including the KCLS Foundation in your will or estate plan. There are many creative ways to fulfill your charitable goals. You can leave cash, stocks, savings bonds, real estate and/or life insurance policies. And, by naming the KCLS Foundation as the primary or contingent beneficiary of your retirement assets, you can provide for the future through tax-advantaged strategies. We welcome the opportunity to talk about your dreams for creating a community of readers and learners. For more information, contact Cindy Sharek, Director of Major and Planned Gifts, at 425.369.3225, [email protected] or visit our website at www.kclsfoundation.org. MEMORIAL DONATION PROVIDES FOR TRANSFORMATION OF WOODINVILLE LIBRARY The Woodinville Library was transformed in 2012 thanks to the generosity of the Family of Ed and Karen Forys. Ed’s three sisters, Georgiana, MaryAnn, and Dianne, and their families, made a donation in memory of Ed and Karen to the KCLS Foundation to fund the project. The funding provided for a remodel of the meeting room which now features new glass sliding doors that open directly into the general library and three new windows to the outside. The library also received new tables and chairs and new lighting. The meeting room, a popular place for library programs and community events, can also be opened to the rest of the library and used as additional quiet study space. Karen Forys served as superintendent of the Northshore School District for many years. She passed away in 2007 after losing her battle with cancer. Four years later, Ed, a highly decorated flight navigator for the U.S. Air Force, died. The couple, who were devoted residents of the Woodinville Community, spent many hours in the Woodinville Library and found KCLS to be a great resource for both professional and recreational reading materials. The meeting room has now been renamed the “Forys Meeting Room” and library’s atrium is now the “Forys Atrium.”

Our Vision A community of avid readers and eager learners served by a public library that offers abundant learning opportunities for everyone. A community of lifelong learners that turns to and relies on the public library for inspiration and information. A library that overflows with intellectual adventures, innovative programs and incredibly easy access to information. A library that is a vibrant and relevant component of our community. Our Mission The King County Library System Foundation promotes literacy, learning and libraries by providing support beyond public funding for initiatives and resources that enable the King County Library System to better serve the needs of our community.

The KCLS Foundation appreciates and acknowledges the generous individual, corporate and foundation support in our community. Just as library catalogers are sticklers for accuracy, we, too, strive to ensure that we have appropriately recognized all donors. We apologize for any omissions or errors in the annual report.
