2021 game notes Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at 7:05 PM Contact: Mike Lindskog Game #3, Road Game #3 [email protected] San Bernardino, CA Rancho Cucamonga QuakeS (2-0) AT 66ers (0-2) RHP Jimmy Lewis (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. LHP Brent Killam (0-0, 0.00 ERA) TODAY’S GAME: The Quakes will be looking to make it three in a row to start the 2021 campaign as they will have reached the STANDINGS mid-point of this 6-game set with the Inland Empire. The Quakes will be looking for their first clean defensive game behind starting pitcher Jimmy Lewis, as the offense will attempt to keep their opportunistic ways going here in game 3. NORTH W L PCT GB LAST NIGHT’S GAME: With a season opener that saw only four combined runs, offense abounded in game two. After a first pith Fresno 2 0 1.000 - home-run for 66ers leadoff man Caleb Scires the Inland Empire scratched across another run in the first off Quakes starter Robbie Modesto 1 1 .500 - Peto. Peto’s team had his back though, as they quickly tied the score in the top of the second. Then the early game breaker came as Stockton 1 1 .500 - San Jose 0 2 .000 - Brandon Lewis blasted the first home-run of the Quakes season, a grand slam to deep left-center which capped off a six-run top of the second and the Quakes wouldn’t look back. Peto lasted two innings and then turned the ball over to the eventual winning pitcher of the night in Julian Smith. The lefty worked four innings of one run baseball and protected the Quakes three run lead into the later SOUTH W L PCT GB Rancho Cucamonga 2 0 1.000 - innings, where the Quakes added on. Rancho was able to add six more runs over the last three innings, with some clutch swings by Lake Elsinore 2 0 1.000 - Edwin Mateo and Jake Vogel, putting the Quakes well out in front. The Inland Empire tried to rally late, but their efforts were all for Inland Empire 0 2 .000 - not as the Quakes slammed the door to lock up their second win in as many games. Visalia 0 2 .000 - 35: The Quakes and 66ers set a new league record on Opening Night with a combined 35 strikeouts, the Quakes pitching staff amassed 21 of the 35. It set a new league record, including the many years of Cal League baseball, it was a night of pitchers imposing their will. And though the score on Opening Night, 3-1, had the look of a pitching duel, the same probably wouldn’t be said for the TODAY 12-6 box score in last nights contest. However, once again the stars aligned and these two teams combined for 35 strikeouts. A record Lake Elsinore at Visalia, 6:00 PM that stood for 70+ years was broken and then tied in back to back games. Whether it can be attributed to the hitters trying to knock Fresno at San Jose, 6:30 PM off the rust of a canceled 2020 season, or well-rested pitching arms eager to attack, this repeated number of 35 strikeouts is simply Stockton at Modesto, 7:05 PM astounding. Tonight will be intriguing as there is a real possibility that we could see a combined 100 strikeouts in the first three games Rancho Cucamonga at Inland Empire, 7:05 PM of this series. OPPORTUNISTIC OFFENSE: The Quakes offense hit a bit of a lull after the Brandon Lewis grand slam in the second inning. Rancho was held scoreless until they broke through in the seventh and added on to what was at the time a three run lead. Jake Vogel’s TOMORROW first professional hit was an RBI triple after a lead off walk. Edwin Mateo, who had three RBI’s in this one, came up with a clutch Lake Elsinore at Visalia, 6:00 PM out-out RBI single in a two-out nightmare for the 66ers, that saw two runs score and their chances to come back in this one get put Fresno at San Jose, 6:30 PM to bed. Quakes finished off the night with a three-run ninth inning, though the only hit of the inning was a Jorbit Vivas RBI single. Stockton at Modesto, 7:05 PM The Quakes have used aggressive base-running and timely hitting to take advantage of defensive mistakes and free passes in the series. Rancho Cucamonga at Inland Empire, 7:05PM JIMMY LEWIS: For the third consecutive night Rancho will be sending a starter to the mound to make his professional debut. This time it’s the highly touted Lake Travis High School right-hander Jimmy Lewis. Lewis stands at an imposing 6’6” and was taken in the second round of the 2019 draft. When drafted, Lewis was receiving comparisons to another former Quake hurler in Dustin May back CAL LEAGUE SCOREBOARD when he was just 18 years-old . Lewis’ length and ability to repeat his delivery gives him good command of a plus fastball and the Yesterday ability to work down in the zone. He complements that heater with a solid curveball and a changeup as well. Lewis made the decision to forgo his full-ride offer to pitch for LSU and instead will be sporting the Rancho Quakes on his chest as he takes the mound tonight Lake Elsinore 11 Visalia 5 to kickoff his professional career. Ranked by Baseball America as the #25 prospect in the Dodgers system, he will get his first chance Fresno 10 San Jose 4 to show what he can do under the pro-ball lights. Stockton 8 Modesto 3 BRENT KILLAM: Inland Empire is looking for someone to quiet the Quakes lineup and head coach Jack Howell will turn to Brent Killam Rancho Cucamonga 12 Inland Empire 6 to try to do just that. Killam is a left-hander who stands just under 6-feet tall and will be toeing the rubber for the 66ers here in game three. Killam spent his college career at Georgetown University where he went 9-10 with a 3.57 ERA. He collected 170 punchouts for the Hoyas over his three seasons and allowed just 60 walks over 136 innings on the hill. Taken by the Angels in the 11th round in 2019, he was in the same 2021 QUAKES AT A GLANCE draft class as Quakes starter Lewis. A match-up of two pitchers taken in the same draft, both making their debuts tonight, could add some extra incentive for Killam as he squares off against the highly touted Lake Travis product Jimmy Lewis here in game three. 1st Half Record: 2-0 AROUND THE FARM: For the first time this season all of the Dodgers minor league affiliates will be taking the field tonight, as the vs Inland Empire: 2-0 Oklahoma City Dodgers will begin their season on the road against the Round Rock Express.
