VARSITY FOOTBALL PLAYS FOR DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP! Our Huskies earned the 2019 Conference Championship on Friday October 24 with a 27-21 win over St Joe. They will start Playoffs this Friday, taking on Portage Central here at home with a 7pm kickoff. It’s going to be a great night of Huskie football!! Tickets will be on sale in the athletic office (inside our main office) Thursday and Friday from 7:30am-3pm, and at the Stadium ticket booth on Friday starting at 3pm. Tickets are $6, cash only. This is an MHSAA event so NO PASSES can be used – no staff passes, no student activity cards, no senior Gold Cards. We are playing PC so you know this game is going to be packed – get your tickets early so you don’t have to wait in line.

“IS ANYBODY THERE?” Did you know that each of our grade offices is responsible for 650 students each day? If you call either office and get voice mail, please don't think "no one's in the office", or "they never answer their phone". Our very busy secretaries are likely helping one of your darling children with something. Customer service is very important to us but we are glad that a huge majority of our parent calls can easily be handled via voicemail. Go ahead and leave that detailed message and know someone will either handle your need or get back with you as soon as possible. #customerservice #youareourcustomer

END OF 1ST QUARTER, FRIDAY NOVEMBER 1 November 1 is the end of the first quarter so students will want to have all assignments and projects turned in at that time. Students can check with their teachers with specific questions regarding deadlines. Teachers will have the weekend to finish entering all grades, so Skyward may not reflect their final quarter grade until the afternoon of Monday November4.

Note that Friday will be a half day with dismissal at 10:55am.

FALL CONFERENCES Save the Date! Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Monday November 4 and Wednesday November 6, 3:30-7:15pm in the Lower Level Commons. Parents do not sign up for time slots in advance. Simply bring your student’s schedule and all of his/her teachers will be at tables in the Commons waiting to go over your students progress and answer any questions you might have.

You might be wondering… “Since I can get up-to-date information on Skyward, why should I come to conferences?” Great question. Speaking with adults who see your student daily can provide insight on what’s behind the grades, plus other issues such as how your student is doing socially. Partnering with teachers now also opens a door for communicating with them later. That will come in handy when helping your teen plan for next semester, next year and beyond.

COLLEGE BOARD SCORE REPORTING Monday November 4 at 6pm, Principal Jim French will give a detailed presentation regarding score interpretation for all College Board assessments (PSAT/SAT) and the MME scores for grades 9-12. This will be in Community Room A during conferences. He will familiarize parents with how to read and understand the score reports and explain how to link College Board and Khan Academy for individualized test prep for students.

BREADLIFT Breadlift is coming November 23! In this annual event, students go door to door in the greater Kalamazoo community offering a loaf of bread in exchange for a donation to the March of Dimes. This is the 54th anniversary of PNHS Breadlift. Huskies have raised over $425,000 so far and have a goal of $25,000 this year!

Breadlift will run from 9am-4pm on the 23rd. This event is a great way for our students to earn service hours for social studies requirements as well as NHS and IB CAS. Parents or community members are welcome to stop by "Bread-quarters" in the Lower Commons that day to make a donation in person!

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Good Citizens program and scholarship contest rewards the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited private and public secondary schools that are in good standing with their State Board of Education. The student selected as the schools DAR Good Citizen must exemplify the qualities of dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality); service (which includes coop- eration, courtesy, and consideration for others); leadership (which includes personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation) to an outstanding degree.

Each school’s DAR Good Citizen is awarded a pin, certificate, and wallet recognition card. The student is then eligible to enter the DAR Good Citizen scholarship contest. This contest consists of completing a personal narrative and information form. Two letters of recommendation are also submitted on behalf of the student. An essay is administered under the supervision of a faculty member and must be completed in one sitting, within a two hour time period, and without assistance or reference materials. Each contest entry is evaluated by the independent, non-DAR judges. The winning entry is advanced through state and national levels of judging.

DAR Good Citizens who enter the scholarship contest are eligible for the awards beyond the chapter level. Each state winner receives an award in the amount of at least $250 and a special state DAR Good Citizens pin and certificate. The national winner will be invited to Washington, D.C. to attend DAR Continental Congress and will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship, an inscribed silver bowl, and certificate. Each of the eight national division (multi-state groups) winners will receive a cash award in the amount of $500.

Please join us in congratulating Hannah Thomas Perez as this year’s DAR Good Citizen. She is an excellent student, a leader in Forensics, the founder of PNHS's Out of the Box Club, and an all-around- amazing person. We are very proud to have Hannah represent Portage Northern in this year’s contest.

GRAD BASH Grad Bash is a parent-chaperoned, all night post-graduation party held immediately following our Graduation ceremony. The transportation, food, entertainment and prizes are provided while keeping the event safe, alcohol/drug free and totally fun! The location of the party is kept secret from the students to heighten the level of excitement. (This also prevents opportunities for uninvited, non-Portage Northern students to attend.)

Historically, Grad Bash has always been a huge success, and thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by the students. While there will be many graduation parties throughout the weeks following graduation, this event is unique in bringing together the entire graduating class, for probably the last time. Additionally, there is no other night that carries more momentum for young people to act impulsively. It is our goal to help our graduates capture all that energy and enthusi- asm by providing them with a fun, yet safe venue at which they can celebrate, relax and have a genuinely good time.

The chairpersons for the 2020 Grad Bash are Rita McKenzie and Nancy Mein. Contact them with any questions on this important event.

Planning Meetings: Be a part of your student's final Northern experience! All senior parents are invited to attend meetings, and even underclassman parents who might like to see what it's all about. Meeting dates will be listed in the daily announcements as well as listed on the Grad Bash webpage.

Fundraiser: Our traditional first fundraiser is a good ol' Bake Sale during conferences November 4+6. We invite parents to donate home baked goodies or snacks, individually wrapped and ready to sell for $1. We have found that 'cuteness counts' so if you are bit crafty with your packaging, the items tend to sell much better. You can drop off items anytime during either of the days of conferences in the main office. The committee will also be in need of student and parent volunteers to help sell on those dates. Here is a Sign Up Genius for the bake sale.

Senior parents will be receiving information on donating to Grad Bash. Donations of all sizes are welcome; these cash donations help keep Grad Bash affordable for all seniors. You may make your tax-deductible check payable to Portage Northern Parents / Grad Bash and mail it to PNHS 1000 Idaho, Portage MI 49024, ATTN: Grad Bash. There will also be many other fundraisers re- lated to Grad Bash throughout the year. We hope you will sup- port this fun party for your senior in whatever way you can!

NOTE: Grad Bash is not sponsored, authorized nor chaperoned by Portage Public Schools nor Portage Northern High School. This event falls under the umbrella of our PN Parents Compass parent group.

NOTES FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE The counselors would like to remind parents and students that we are here to advocate for students and their needs. We would like to encourage parents to:  contact teachers first with concerns about assignments, grades or student progress.  ask teachers for specific feedback and to offer specific recommendations/suggestions for improving academic achieve- ment in their classes.  contact counselors if grade concerns are not resolved.  contact counselors if/when questions arise.

College Deadlines

Seniors… be sure that you are aware of the specific deadlines for your colleges of interest. December and/or January 1 are common deadlines. University of Michigan’s early action deadline is November 1, 2019. All transcript requests for college applications and/or scholarships must be requested through Parchment.com. If you are applying to a school on the Common App, be sure that you link your Parchment and Common App accounts. By doing so, Parchment will send your transcript to the Common App.

Seniors

We visited your English classes in October to give detailed Financial Aid Presentations. Copies of that presentation are on our PN Counseling webpage. Students received a folder with many printed materials, including: copies of the parent financial aid presentations, a copy of the counselors’ presentation, several scholarship resources, student loan information and resources to get help completing the FAFSA. Counselors met with individual students to inquire about their post-high school plans during September through November. .

Counselors also have been available for online help for all things college application related. There have been three different dates where counselors were present in the media center to provide help/feedback to senior students on college app ques- tions.

Juniors

The PSAT ( the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program) was held here in October. This year, the test was mandatory for all juniors. Students will receive an email from the College Board notifying them to check their online College Board account for their scores. All students should have a College Board account. If you have forgotten your password, do not create a second account. Rather, go through the “forgot password” steps to access the current account. All students have access to the College Board, linked with Khan academy, for more guided practice on where to focus for test improvements.

Counselors will visit all junior English classes in early December to give a very detailed College Research / Career planning presentation. Students will receive many resources for college/career planning, research and a detailed timeline and checklist.

Sophomores

Counselors are in the process of doing a “Sophomore Check-in” to see how the tenth grade is going for them. Each sopho- more will meet with his/her counselor in a 1:1 setting to check in, discuss college/post-secondary plans and to have an oppor- tunity to ask for help or other resources. They’ll receive a folder with printed materials: a sophomore checklist for college & career planning, academic resources and a career interest inventory.

Freshmen

During the fall, counselors met with all freshmen in a “freshman interview”. The goal was to introduce ourselves to the students and begin to get to know them. We discussed post-high school plans and checked in to see how the start of their 9th grade year is going for them. All students now have the contact info for their counselor and should know that they can sched- ule an appointment with their counselor at any time (by coming into the counseling office and making an appt with our admin- istrative assistant, Ms. Hunter) or they can email their counselor with any questions or concerns. In their folder of materials, they received a printed list of clubs and school activities, academic resources and interventions, an explanation of how credit is awarded, study tips and tricks, helpful information in dealing with anxiety, information about the absence/attendance policy and a list of math tutors for hire.

Career Expo!

Over 125 students in grades nine through 12 participated in the inaugural PN Career Expo on October 23. The first pathway highlighted was the Health and Human services field. Presenters from over 30 different topics/areas of work in the Health and Human services field were present to speak with interested students in a small group setting. Northern students voluntarily signed up for the event and they chose the topics in which they were interested, ranking them from 1 to 5. They were then hand placed in their top choices throughout the expo. Students visited with a presenter for about 20 minutes, leaving time for questions.

It was so amazing to see the students so engaged, to be actively listening and to be excited to learn something new. Many students commented on the fact that they learned about jobs and careers that they never even knew existed. The goal was to bring exposure and awareness to students about a variety of jobs and careers in the health and human services field, which require varying levels of post secondary education, training, certification or on the job training.

The next day, the positive student feedback rolled in to teachers and staff. Here are some examples:

—“ I finally know what I want to be… I want to be an industrial pharmacist. I never even knew that was an option!”

—“ I always wanted to be a veterinarian, but I didn’t think that I had the grades or academic ability to get through that much college or veterinary school. I learned that pet grooming would be an awesome way to work with animals, spend time with animals and help them and help their families. And it is a skill that I could learn and be good at”.

—“ I always thought I wanted to work for CPS… But I never knew there were so many jobs in the medical field that I could actually do… Because I knew I couldn’t be a doctor. Now I know there are other ways of helping people, with pro- grams that require shorter training or certification than medical school”.

—“ I always knew I wanted to be a doctor of some sort… But now I know, for a fact, that surgery is where it’s at. I was absolutely fascinated by the surgeon’s stories and presentation.”

The presenters gave their kudos, as well:

—“ The PN career expo was of college/professional quality.”

— “It was one of the most organized large scale events I’ve ever been to.”

—“ Today I got to talk to high school students about prenatal health. I never even knew that was a career possibility when I was in high school. And today I got to share my passion and knowledge with students to help them learn about future possibilities for them to study. How amazing is that?!?”

Career Expo by the numbers: 125 students attended. Females: 75 = 60% a nd Males: 49 =40%

Seniors 41 = 33%, Juniors 42 = 34%, Sophomores 31 = 25%, Freshmen 8 = 7%

THANK YOU!! Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to help and to those that made donations. Thank you to the presenters, our administration and teacher support and to our well-behaved, respectful participating students. Very special gratitude to NHS staff Stacey Hunter, Kim Loiselle, Brenda Marsh, April Tanner, Cam Mellinger, Adam Cardona, and to the Rathburn family and Rathco.

Portage Northern has three additional Career Expos planned for this school year. December 11 will focus on Skilled Trades/ Construction/Architecture, March 18 will be Engineering and Manufacturing and May 20 will highlight Business/ Manage- ment/Hospitality. All events will be from 8:30 to 11:30 in the Portage Northern Doghouse. Students can contact the counsel- ing office for more information, as well as listen to the daily announcements for signup information.

PN DRAMA WINTER PLAY Traditionally, PNHS produces a musical in the fall and then a non-musical play in the winter months. We are excited to an- nounce our drama department will produce She Kills Monsters this year, opening on Friday January 17, 2020.

A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop cul- ture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart- pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

Those interested in working crew or auditioning are encour- aged to attend an informational meeting on Nov 11th in room 3.125 @ 3:00 PM. Audition forms and sides will be available at this meeting.

I hope this finds you all well and enjoying the beautiful Fall season.

I would like to thank those of you who were able to join us for our October evening meeting on Teen Stress & Anxiety. Counselors from Kalamazoo Child & Family Psychological Services presented and answered questions for over an hour! We cannot thank them enough for their time and expertise. We hope that those who were in attendance were able to gain valuable insight and learn new strategies as to how we can best help your kiddos navigate these tough teenage years.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 11:30am in our Community Rooms. Assistant Principal Nate Led- low has been working very closely with representatives from Prevention Works Task Force. They will be here to pre- sent on the dangers of vaping, e-cigarettes, substance abuse, etc. Please join us as we discuss what’s new and what’s trending in the lives of our teenagers.

In addition, I would like to invite all Huskie households to join us as we prepare for the Holiday Dance which will be Saturday, December 7, 2019 from 8-11pm. This is an “ALL hands on deck” event! We will need a small army of volunteers to help decorate on Friday afternoon, work the dance on Saturday evening and tear down on Sunday morning. Your support is very much appreciated. A SignupGenius will be sent out in the next few weeks. Please mark your calendars today!
