Template for Conversion Today’s readings speak of repentance. God asks Jonah to preach repentance to the people of Nineveh. But this is not the first time God has asked him. The first time, Jonah refused. This second time, he obeys God. That’s repentance number 1. Then Jonah preaches, and everyone in Nineveh—the king, farmers, housewives and plumbers—repent and are saved. That’s repentance number 2—and it’s an impressive one. The responsorial psalm today provides a mantra for those seeking repentance: Teach me your ways , O God. God’s ways provide the template for our righteousness. The picks us this theme of repentance. announces, The Kingdom of God is at hand. It is not far off or way up high or way over there. It is near. It is here. And because the kingdom is here, we repent. Our repentance doesn’t cause the kingdom of God to appear. Our repentance is our jubilant response to the presence of God already in our midst. STEWARDSHIP, OUR MINISTRY FAIR, AND OUR ANNUAL RENEWAL… Stewardship: a way of life for our St. Bernadette Parish Family…

“The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” : 15 STEWARDSHIP & FOLLOWING JESUS…

Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. With these words Jesus invites Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew to follow Him and be His disciples. We often speak of the subtleties of translation. In the original Greek in which Saint Mark wrote his Gospel, a better translation would be, Come after me, and I will make you It is January, which means many things to those of us become fishers of men. It is the beginning of a process. in Florida, and especially here at St. Bernadette Parish. We are called to that same process. It is not as if it For one thing it means that our weather, no matter how happens quite suddenly. It happens over time, and it is a chilly it may seem at times, is much better than many parts progression. If we are to be fishers of men, we are to be of this country. It also means the arrival of many wonderful evangelizers and disciples of the Lord, and we are to people who opt to spend some time with us at this time of represent what it means to be part of the Kingdom of God. year.

Of course, Simon and Andrew “abandoned their nets Finally, it means it is time for our annual stewardship and followed him.” It may be more difficult for us to renewal here at St. Bernadette. Every year at this time we “abandon our nets” so to speak, but it does prompt us that prayerfully renew our commitments of time, talent, and we need to make major changes in our lives if we are treasure for the upcoming year. Our theme this year is a going to follow Jesus. Simon and Andrew, and then quote from Saint Catherine of Siena: Be who God James and John, were common men, normal people. meant you to be and you will set the world on fire. If They had no theological credentials, nor did they have any you have spent any time with us, you are aware that we special status in the world. speak of stewardship often. Most of us are similar. Jesus did not select them (or stewardship, however, falls during the time when we are us) for who they were. He called them for what He could also asking for your commitment of financial support. It’s do through them. It is the same with each of us. Yes, we important to remember, though, that stewardship is about so much more than money. are called, but in order to really fulfill our calling we need to follow and trust in Jesus. Ω God is both source and ultimate owner of all that we have, and He entrusts all that we have to our faithful care and use (our stewardship). He entrusts to us resources of time, talent, and treasure. He entrusts to us skills, energy, possessions, money, the earth, one another. He entrusts everything to us. Stewardship is a way of thanking God for our blessings as we return a portion of the many gifts that we have been given by God. We express our gratitude for these gifts through prayer, the liturgy, our offerings, and our action.

This weekend is our Ministry Fair and next weekend is Commitment Weekend. It is your stewardship gifts which allow us to set the world on fire. Ω St. Bernadette Catholic Church January 21, 2018 350 NW California Boulevard, Port St. Lucie, FL 34986 Page 4
