WHEN THE GREAT SHIP WENT DOWN or QUACK, QUACK

You talk about yore Thomas Liptons or yore Cornelius Vanderbilts. Hershoffs an all them so an sos ... Elvstroms, Mosbachers, Turners! Why them folks so what calls er .;elves sailors jes cain't hold a shackle lo thu reel champeen of worlwide salty sailors.

I 'II tell yew the story ( so far J of thu rip roarlnest tar that ever swashed a buckle. His name was Carl SLOCUM Morris •.. an oddly enuf he was reared in thu extreme driest, most parched part of God's forsaken country. CLARENDON, TEXAS!

It was powerful hard to learn much sailin in Clarendon. In fact. baby Carl learnt to sail in a bottle of gin ( which was more plentiful than water). Baby Carl never got wet because, yew see, it was ;ery ~ gin. His reputashun was allus goin before him . Like to A & M: hu oniTe-st NAVAL AVIATOR to get graduated at AGGIELAND ( I told you Carl was really salty} Nobody could believe that, not even the Navy. It was thu very same U.S.N. that sent Carl all over thu world so that all our sailors could sec thu Argie Sailing Flyer.

After servin' as a example to our fightin' men, Carl kept our aircraft Industry goin after the war: He kept usin them flyin machines on thu farm. He was part of thu experimental team given thu job to plow up Floridy and \Vest Texas. They had to build a lot more of them surplus planes. But after havin' conk~rd thu air, ·earl decided lo return to his first love. And what eL '? could offer a challen~ to this "soldier" of fortune? The AYC Soulhcoast Fleet. Followin several years of "banging around" amongst his fellow sailors, Carl decided that it was really submareen warfare that Interested him. H~ took his Southcoasl 21 to Houston, Corpus Christi, an even Del Rio to try and te!l thu thing under water. But thu gol-dern thing would just come a bcbbin up ever time he drove It under. "Never Give Up" Morris decided he would give his Southcoast the ultimate test an g~ where no Southcoast had ever dared afore· that's rite, he joined up with thu intrepid Pan~.andle Hydroplane Reesurch Fasility ( PH~F to yew folk;; having truble with pronoun secashun) Carl, was allus a pioneer. An in Lhu spirit of ole Chris Columbus an women's lib. he decided lo go with an all Italian female crew ( Lisa Calogero).

Well, after a lot o hard sailin Carl finally tested his Southcoast under ¥ater as a two-persun submareen. Now thu Southcoast 21 is a fine sailin v ~ssel. but its looks like more Vlork needs to be done on thu ballast tanks an thu peerascope. Carl reported that even he couldn't see much trying to · use his new 26 ft ( super long) scope at Arkinsaw Bend. He did manage to pinpoint that big lump o ground where we allus catches our . Carl said he put a torpeedo into it and now we can just sail rite over that place ( Carl also had to patch his port bow where the tarpeedo came out).

But neve,· say die Morris ain't thru yet; says he has jes scratched thu surface of spirimental Southcoast use. He has an A11tartic xpedition planned for lhu year 2000. After that he plans to retire ol' 1123 as a flotin lab fer AYC. An thats why us Southcoast sailers allus say Carl Morris is a LEGEND IN HIS OWN PRIME. * * * * * * * * • * * * * *

Before hunting eggs In the prams, the young sailors had a race In which they sailed to an innertube, tossed an egg In It, and sailed back across the finish line. Brian Wann and John Vance won a very close race. The success of the Junior Salling Program was apparent, as all boats were handled very well. JUNIOR SAi LING CAMP DON'T FORGET. ..
