September 2018

REQ000173 Bradford Grammar School is one of the oldest and most respected institutions in Bradford, tracing its roots back to 1548. Recognised as a beacon of educational excellence, the School achieves exceptional public examination results. In 2017, 21% of all A-Level entries were awarded A* (compared to 8.1% nationally) and 56% of all entries were graded A* or A (compared to 25.8% nationally). Our GCSE results in 2017 were record-breaking, with 47% of all entries graded A*. 73% of all GCSE entries were graded A* or A.

At the same time, the School places a premium on nurturing well-rounded, interesting and decent young people who are actively engaged in various interests outside of the classroom. Sport and the creative arts are flourishing; the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and volunteering projects remain popular. Academic success is celebrated, but there is far more to life at Bradford Grammar School than exam results.

The School reflects the diversity of its host city, welcoming children from many different backgrounds, faiths and cultures. Parents and the wider community value this strength within the School, regarding it as an invaluable preparation for the world that children will encounter in their later lives. Creating a sense of community is hugely important for the School. Relationships with local schools and the local council are also excellent.

The School moved to its current 25-acre site in in 1949 and it has continually invested in the campus since that time. Facilities are outstanding, including well- equipped laboratories and teaching rooms, sports hall, 25m swimming pool, sports pavilion, all-weather sports pitch, squash and tennis courts, a refurbished dining hall, recording studio, music auditorium, a dedicated sixth-form centre, a new three-storey science/social science faculty building, state-of-the-art library, a theatre and one of the finest assembly halls in the UK. All the buildings are maintained to a very high standard, and all of this has been accomplished without incurring debt as the School’s financial position is extremely strong. Governance of the School has been consistently excellent since independence in 1975. ‘Bradford Grammar School provides an outstanding education’ was the headline conclusion of the School’s last Inspection report in November 2011 and the School has made determined efforts to build upon that success. It has been ranked as ‘one of the ten best value private schools in the UK’ (Daily Telegraph) with a ‘first-class, academic and outward looking approach’ (Good Schools Guide).

A richly cosmopolitan district, Bradford combines areas undergoing urban regeneration with areas of considerable affluence, the latter especially in the Wharfe Valley. It is also a district with considerable entrepreneurial spirit. In recent times, Bradford has undergone significant city-centre redevelopment. The city is home to two successful higher and further educational institutions – the University of Bradford and . There are strong sporting and cultural highlights, including the award-winning National Science and Media Museum, the nearby Bradford City FC, Bradford Bulls RLFC, Salem RUFC, Ben Rhydding Hockey Club, Ilkley Tennis Club, the Alhambra Theatre and St George’s Hall which host a wide range of concert performances.

With excellent road and rail links, including a station served by the Airedale and Wharfedale lines within a five-minute walk, the School benefits from a large catchment area across . Fifty-seven per cent of pupils have homes with Bradford postcodes (this includes the Aire Valley and Skipton) with the remaining 43 per cent having Leeds (primarily Ilkley, Adel and Horsforth), Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield postcodes.

The Classics Department has a high profile in the academic life of the school and enjoys a good deal of success both in public examinations and in its broader academic endeavours. It provides our pupils with an appealing, mind-broadening and rigorous curriculum. In addition to the Head of Classics, there are two full-time teachers in the department; the Assistant Head (Pastoral) also teaches Classics and another Assistant Head contributes to the teaching of Latin in Year 7.

Latin is taught throughout the Senior School; it is compulsory in Years 7 and 8 and becomes an optional subject thereafter. The department uses the Cambridge Latin Course in Years 7 and 8 and So You Really Want to Learn Latin and other materials for Year 9 and the GCSE course. There are generally three sets of Latin in Year 9 and two sets for GCSE. In 2017, 68% of GCSE candidates achieved an A* grade and 89% an A* or an A. There is one healthy set of Latin A Level in each Sixth Form year, and in 2017 our candidates achieved one A* and four A grades. Greek is taught as an optional subject from Year 9 onwards. Typically, between 8 and 10 pupils start their study of Greek in Year 9, and a large majority of them continue to GCSE. In 2017, all 7 GCSE candidates achieved an A* grade. A Level Greek is also taught on timetable and although it attracts a small number of candidates, their results are invariably very strong indeed, with A* and A grades the norm. Classical Civilisation is taught in the Sixth Form and there is one healthy set in each year. Last year, 75% of Year 12 candidates achieved an A grade at AS Level and the signs are very promising for this year’s A Level cohort. A number of Year 13 pupils apply to leading universities every year to read Classics and related subjects. The department has a long history of success in preparing pupils for entry into the most competitive courses, including at Oxford and Cambridge.

The department is accommodated in three large classrooms, and there is also a smaller tutorial room and a dedicated Classics office. The resources at the department’s disposal are outstanding, with a wide range of printed and audio-visual material available. The use of electronic resources is also increasing: the department makes good use of the eCLC package, for example. Colleagues share a great deal of resources and work together in a very collegiate manner. The department organises an annual visit to Pompeii for pupils in Year 8 and a biennial Senior Classics trip alternately to Italy and Greece. In addition, there are annual trips to classical sites in the North of England (e.g. Hadrian’s Wall) and to lectures and conferences on classical themes. The department runs a highly successful Classical Society one lunchtime a week, at which pupils and staff discuss a wide variety of classical topics, and takes part in other extra-curricular classical activities, for example the University of Leeds Classical Reading competition. The successful candidate would be expected to play a full part in these activities, including overseas visits to classical sites. Lessons take place in rooms along a pleasant corridor in the main building. All rooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards and projectors and also have a conventional white board, a networked PC and facilities to play DVDs and CDs. Additional workspace and staff computers are available in the Classics office. Book stocks are substantial and there is a generous budget for new texts. Stationery and photocopying facilities are readily available. The successful candidate will be a forceful advocate for Classics as an academic discipline and will have high expectations of what our pupils are able to achieve. S/he will understand the positive difference that the subject makes in terms of our pupils’ cultural enrichment and their understanding of the world we live in, and s/he will enjoy working in a harmonious and friendly department that values the contributions of all colleagues.
