An NTUC Media Co-operative Limited Production Editorial he past year has been an interesting and hectic time for the union. At the leadership level, we saw the passing of one great leader and retirement of another experienced leader. Other developments included the sale Tof power generation companies and the pursuit of the Labour Movement 2011 Vision. The leadership transition saw Comrade Tay Seng Chye succeeding Comrade Abdul Rahman Mahbob as President. Moving forward, we are clear that expert and professional input and advice is needed as the challenges ahead will be more complex and demanding. Understanding UPAGE’s situation, NTUC extended the service of Comrade S Thiagarajan as Executive Secretary and Comrade Aaron Neo as UPAGE Industrial Relations Officer at a nominal fee. Special thanks also to Advisor Comrade Sin Boon Ann who was heavily involved in discussing the leadership changes. The sale of Tuas Power went off smoothly. UPAGE was closely consulted by Temasek from early last year when the matter was broached to the union. Several initiatives were undertaken to pursue the goals of the LM2011 vision. Our delegates are doing their best to recruit new members. Every member can join us in this effort to convince those who are standing alone to join the union. UPAGE never hesitated to raise members’ related issues with any level or even the regulator. UPAGE met the Energy Market Authority on future directions especially those having an impact on the employment of members. Members have been receiving better bonuses this year. This is due to the great work of branch officials and delegates. They are the link between members, union and the management – negotiating and working behind the scenes quietly and effectively. So, let us say a big THANK YOU to the branch and delegate officials, our unsung heroes.

resident Tay Seng Chye took over on 12 November 2007. Elected as a branch delegate in 1995, he has over the last 12 years taken on various leadership positions. Starting as P Assistant General Secretary, then Deputy General Secretary and then Vice-President, he now serves UPAGE as President and is concurrently the Chairman of the Power Seraya Branch. Mr Tay has a degree in Business Administration in addition to a Diploma in Electrical Engineering and a Diploma in Management Studies. Vice-President Durai Pandian K is not a new face to union work. He has been a union leader since the 1970s and was the former Deputy General Secretary of the PUB Daily Rated Employees Union. He played a key role in skills upgrading of daily-rated employees to technicians. Durai Pandian started as the PowerGrid Assistant Secretary, then entered the Exco and became the Assistant General Treasurer as well as the PowerGrid Branch Secretary. He has a Diploma in Industrial Relations which he completed in 2004. Mr S Thiagarajan was appointed UPAGE’s Executive Secretary in November 2007. As the union’s former Industrial Relations Consultant, Mr Thiagarajan has worked closely with UPAGE leaders for close to six years. He comes with many years of IR experience in various

PAGE unions, and was instrumental in the smooth transition of the change of leadership. He is a Colombo Plan

OUR Scholar and concurrently the Director of the Ong Teng Cheong Institute of Labour Studies. Mr Aaron Neo recently joined the union as its Industrial Relations Officer. Despite working less than a year in the union, Mr Neo’s amiable nature May 08 has helped him gain the trust and confidence of the leaders. He assists UPAGE General Secretary RKS Nachiappan in the day to day affairs of the union. He was educated in the National University of Singapore and holds a first class honours degree.
