  • Report: Federal Houses Landmarked Or Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places 1999
GREENWICH VILLAGE SOCIETY FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION Making the Case Federal Houses Landmarked or Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places 1999-2016 The many surviving Federal houses in Lower Manhattan are a special part of the heritage of New York City. The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation has made the documentation and preservation of these houses an important part of our mission. This report highlights the Society’s mission in action by showing nearly one hundred fifty of these houses in a single document. The Society either proposed the houses in this report for individual landmark designation or for inclusion in historic districts, or both, or has advocated for their designation. Special thanks to Jiageng Zhu for his efforts in creating this report. 32 Dominick Street, built c.1826, landmarked in 2012 Federal houses were built between ca. 1790 to ca. 1835. The style was so named because it was the first American architectural style to emerge after the Revolutionary War. In elevation and plan, Federal Period row houses were quite modest. Characterized by classical proportions and almost planar smoothness, they were ornamented with simple detailing of lintels, dormers, and doorways. These houses were typically of load bearing masonry construction, 2-3 stories high, three bays wide, and had steeply pitched roofs. The brick facades were laid in a Flemish bond which alternated a stretcher and a header in every row. All structures in this report were originally built as Federal style houses, though

  • City Council Announcement Re: Hudson Sq. Rezoning and South
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS CITY HALL NEW YORK, NY 10007 (212) 788-7116 **FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE** March 13, 2013 Contact: 212-788-7116 Release # 037-2013 CITY COUNCIL LAND USE COMMITTEE MODIFIES HUDSON SQUARE REZONING PLAN; PRESERVES HISTORIC SOUTH VILLAGE Council agreement provides funds for new roof at Pier 40, 130 more affordable housing units & additional open space for community “The Hudson Square area in Manhattan’s West Side has long been a largely under regulated neighborhood putting it at constant risk of change not supported by the community nor this Council,” said Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn. “Currently, there are no height restrictions in the district which could lead to unwanted skyscrapers. Additionally, the outdated prohibition of residential development has led to little foot traffic on nights or weekends hurting the neighborhood’s small businesses. To this end, the Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises and Committee on Land use will vote today to help to preserve much of the neighborhood’s beloved character and commercial foundation while also bringing a desired vitality and more open space to attract new residents and businesses. I want to thank Trinity Real Estate, Community Board 2, all elected officials, and the City Planning Commission for their dedication to ensuring the neighborhood will grow in a way that was in the best interest of the current and future community.” The Council has made several key modifications to the proposal submitted by the applicant, Trinity Real Estate, which include: - More Affordable Housing: Modification of the zoning text to allow developers to maximize affordable housing to the fullest extent allowed.

Known for 3 the small art galleries, sidewalk trendy cafes, and 32 33 boutiques that line its streets, SoHo is an 6 experience to be slowly sipped, absorbed block by block and savored over an intimate dinner. 18 10 30 38 29 31 7 Having outgrown its early radical persona, SoHo 5 25 23 27 has carved out a popular niche for itself — 9 26 4 35 culturally and economically. The same lofts once prized for their location, are no longer inexpensive. The escalated cost of living is now forcing up-and- coming artists to flee to Neo-Bohemian enclaves like Williamsburg in Brooklyn, eroding SoHo’s cutting-edge reputation. The area’s established 22 15 chic character, however, is firmly embedded. 28 Bordering SoHo and the Lower East Side, Little Italy remains the heart of New York’s Old World 11 Italian culture — a character slowly being whittled 12 away by time. This is where it all started. The turn- of-the-century flood of Italian immigrants into the area’s cramped tenements that were the launching pad from which they have achieved great heights.
