St. Bernard Appalachian Mission

Nature sure has provided challenges to our mission over the last year. Last year we were able to assist with a greatly expanded food pantry program with your generous donations and redirection of our 2020 building funds. The pantry continues to provide to over 500 families weekly. At the beginning of March, the Dunlow area was hit with another natural disaster. There was severe flooding that damaged at least 100-150 homes and threatened our community center – the mainstay of the food pantry. Luckily, our resources were not damaged. We sent $2000 out of our Appalachian Mission fund to replace affected residences appliances and pay for cleaning materials.

For 2021, there has been a decision to have a very different arrangement of work camp. We are targeting the building of two new homes, and not including any major repair projects. This is to insure the safety of all locals and participants against the COVID threat. Usually we have a group of 100-120 participants attend one week of construction and repairs. This year, we have planned much smaller groups, timed appropriately, to accomplish the two new house builds. The first team of 30-50 participants from Ohio, Chicago, Kansas City and Maryland will be responsible for erecting the first house (foundation already in) the week of June 6-12. St. Bernard will send a crew of six for the week of June 13-19 with the intent of installing the electrical and plumbing in the new house. Other smaller teams will follow us to insulate and sheet rock the house. For the week of July 25-31, Immaculata High School from Somerville will send down a team of 40-50 students and chaperones to begin the build on the second house. From August 1-7 St. Bernard will again send down a small team to install the electrical and plumbing in the second house. Another team from northeast WV will come in to complete the insulation and sheet rock for the second house. All of these plans may change as there is a shortage of building materials as well as a significant pricing increase in all materials. (Previous years homes were constructed for $25K. This year the same house is pricing out at $40K for materials.) The team in Dunlow is in the process of procuring what they can in advance and staging material at the local high school.

I will ask again that you consider financial assistance to this ministry so we can carry out this year’s arrangements. We will need to rent vans for the two trips (typical cost is $1,000 per van per week including rental, insurance and fuel) as well as purchase food for the team while we are in WV. Any and all funds collected is used specifically toward the building and plans as described. We appreciate that every year, the generosity of this parish allows us to continue this important mission.

Together with Monsignor Vashon, we would ask that if you can help, please consider placing a check in one of the collection boxes, or sending a check to St. Bernard’s office (500 US-22, Bridgewater Township, NJ 08807). Please make checks payable to St. Bernard and note on the check memo “Appalachian Mission”.

Thank you again for your prayers and all you have contributed to this very worthwhile cause. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to [email protected] or [email protected] Phil Guastella - Ted Bell - Art Sanford

Matthew 25:35-40 – For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.
