HANNON SOCIETY 2012 EVENTS FEATURED SPEAKER: DAVE STOCKTON Couples Cocktail Party Celebrating

Coach & Jo’s 65th Anniversary

Dave Stockton was a major championship-winning player on the PGA Tour and on the senior circuit, then became famous as an instructor. Stockton's father was a golf professional, but Dave didn't turn seriously to golf until his late teens. A California kid, he grew up loving surfing and playing basketball and baseball. But Stockton suffered a broken back when he was 15 in a surfing accident. Ironically, since he had a back injury, Stockton decided to focus on golf and give up the other sports.

Just as his father before him, Stockton became captain of the golf team at the University of Southern California. He graduated in 1964, turned pro and joined the PGA Tour. His first years as a pro were lean, but the breakthrough came in 1967. That year, Stockton earned his first PGA Tour victory.

From 1968 through 1976, Stockton was a regular contender on tour. Known as one of the best putters in the game, Stockton won his first major at the 1970 PGA Championship, outlasting Arnold Palmer. His best tour season was 1974, when he won three times and posted his only Top 10 finish on the money list. Stockton was runner-up at the 1974 Masters, then won the PGA Championship again in 1976, his 10th win on the PGA Tour.

As a senior golfer on the Champions Tour, Stockton won 14 more times, including the 1996 U.S. Senior Open. He was the Champions Tour Player of the Year in 1993, when he won five times.

In 1991, Stockton captained the American Ryder Cup team to victory at Kiawah Island, a battle that came to be known as the "War on the Shore." Stockton led the Americans in an aggressive, hyper-patriotic stance before and during the matches.

Stockton's final Champions Tour win was in 1997. But he soon started gaining a reputation as a great putting instructor, his work with Annika Sorenstam bringing his teaching skills into the spotlight. Stockton has released several putting instructionals, including the DVD Putt to Win and the book Dave Stockton's Putt to Win: Secrets for Mastering the Other Game of Golf.

Stockton is married to former Orange Show beauty queen, Catherine Hales. His two sons, Dave Jr. and Ronnie, both played professional golf and also teach.

HANNON SOCIETY 2012 EVENTS THE HISTORY OF THE HANNON CUP In 1997, a group of Austin golfers had an idea of honoring their friend and mentor George Hannon. George had recently retired from his Head Golf Professional du- Day of Golf: ties at Morris Williams Golf Course and had retired as Golf Coach at the University of Texas some years earlier. Golf, Fitness & Nutrition Instruction Mark Coward, then Head Professional at Great Hills C.C. and Brent Buckman, then Director of Golf at Barton Creek C.C. were instrumental in conceiving the idea and in organizing and forming the initial committee. Thus the Hannon Cup was born – the Austin golf community’s way of honoring the “Coach.”

The Ryder Cup style format was selected for the competition with the top 14 Austin metro area golf professionals playing against the top 14 male amateurs. Each team was headed by a selected captain who in turn chose his team. The yearly competition has been a testament to “Coach,” filled with excitement, fellowship and “true grit.”

Support for the event was provided by a group of individuals and businesses that became known as the Hannon Society. Proceeds from their efforts were initially used to support the University of Texas George Hannon Scholarship Fund. This fund was fully endowed with the help of additional contributions from the Barton Creek Men’s Golf Association. In 2003, the Hannon Cup was upgraded to an official 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and was renamed the Hannon Cup Association. The Association is governed by a Steering Committee of 13 individuals and advised by Coach Hannon. Over the years, the Association has evolved from a one event, single purpose entity to a major contributor toward growth of the game initiatives in central Texas.

To date the Association has distributed over $120,000 worth of secondary education scholarships through the Southern Texas PGA Foundation. In August, the Association hosted the Second Annual George Hannon Junior Invitational at the UT Golf Club. The event, managed by the Texas Legends Junior Tour, is one of the premier junior golf tournaments in the state. The City of Austin Junior Golf Academy and The First Tee of Greater Austin are also beneficiaries of the Association’s fundraising efforts. In 2010, the Association launched a new scholarship program honoring long time amateur golfer Billy Clagett. For every junior golfer in central Texas who qualifies for a USGA national event the Hannon Cup Association will provide a $500 stipend to help with travel costs.

Coach Hannon’s goal of promoting golf to all players, from beginners to experts, is also a goal of the Hannon Cup Association. Honoring his principles of honesty, fair play and integrity will always be a part of the mission.
