These tasks have been designed for you to learn about exploration in New Zealand. Read through all the Concepts learning boxes and click on the links to check out the different activities. The ‘Perspective’ task is a MUST DO task for everyone to complete and then you have the choice of ​ ​ ​ selecting one or more further tasks to do.

People have migrated to Aotearoa, New Zealand for many different reasons. Perspective What are the points Biographical presentation - choose a NZ place that you have a connection of view? with (i.e. Kaiteriteri, Reefton, Catlins) and explore the area. Read Explore with Captain Cook and take notes under the following ​ ​ headings: ● Why is it important that the explorations of Captain Cook have been recorded for us to read about today? ● Discoveries made by Captain Cook Responsibility ● Interesting things you discovered that you didn’t already know What are our responsibilities? Write a glossary of exploration words - remember that they need to be in ​ ​ alphabetical order and have a short definition attached.

Create a memory box that captures the feelings and thoughts of a new migrant onboard the Charlotte Jane. Use different elements of figurative language (eg. alliteration, similies, metaphors, personification etc. click ​ here to view examples) to describe the emotions of the migrants and if ​ you can, try to record what they would have smelt, seen, felt and heard. AND Try to look through the eyes of one of the following people who may have been on board one of the first four ships ● A young female child (5-10 years old) ● A young male child (5-10 years old) ● A teenage male ● A teenage female ● The captain ● A member of the crew Record down 7-10 diary entries that capture their thoughts and feelings about the journey they are on. You may wish to begin at the beginning of the journey, in the middle or at the end of the journey as they begin to see land.

How can I present my findings? ● Your work will be completed in your Inquiry Google docs folder. Please make sure that each activity is titled with the Key Concept you are working on and the name of the activity. Eg. Reflection - Kahoot. ● Please use font ‘quicksand’ size 16 for headings and 14 for the remainder of the text. ● When we return to school, there will be an opportunity for you to share your research and presentations with your classmates.
