Mainland Matters – April 2018

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Well, winter now seems to have kicked in with very chilly starts to the mornings. I hope that the season has started well for you all.

ANZ Premiership pre-season games for all franchises were held recently in Otaki, our Silvermoon Tactix team winning three games out of three. While this was a great confidence booster for the team and allowed the Coaches to trial different combinations, we are ‘not getting ahead of ourselves’, and know that what counts is performances on the court.

The ANZ Premiership season proper got under way with all six teams playing in yesterday. The Silvermoon Tactix were up against the and for the first time in ANZ Premiership history the match went into extra time with scores locked at 55-55 after regulation time. The Silvermoon Tactix came from behind to nab a thrilling one-goal extra time victory.

The team now heads to to play the on Wednesday 9 May and then we are in on Monday 14 May the against . Tune into SKY Sport to watch the games live. THEN WE COME HOME…YAY !

Our first home game of the season is on Wednesday 23 May vs Northern Stars – get along and support your team 

BROOKE HAS WHEELS!

We all know that Brooke has ‘wheels’ on the court and now she has wheels to drive, thanks to our Netball Mainland partner Abell Rentals. Pictured below receiving the keys to her vehicle from Abell Rentals owner Allan Scott.

Allan and the team at Abell Rentals have been long-time supporters of Netball, and you will find Allan and his wife Moira courtside at Silvermoon Tactix home games cheering the team on!

Abell Rentals provide not only cars but also vans and trucks. So, if you have any teams or people within your Centres needing wheels too, give Allan a call and say you are part of the Netball Mainland family and he will look after you.

MEMBERSHIP RETURNS

Accurate reporting of membership numbers is vital to ensure we can receive funding to maintain and develop programmes going forward. Netball Mainland has sent out documents pertaining to the membership return for 01 December 2017 to 31 May 2018. We appreciate Centre’s co-operation in completing the return and sending it back to Tamika Green.

REMINDER FOR CENTRES – REQUIREMENTS OF INCORPORATION

It is important a Centre remains up to date with its legal requirements to maintain incorporated society status. A Centre is only an official legal entity if it remains registered. If a Centre does not meet the compulsory requirements, they have the potential to be struck off the incorporated society register.

As a reminder to all Centres to remain incorporated, there is a compulsory requirement of uploading an Annual Financial Statement. The financial statement should be filed with the Registrar when financial statements have been approved at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The deadline for filing is the end of the month after the AGM. For example, if the AGM month is January, the financial statements are due to be filed before 28 February.

Failure to file a Financial Return one month post your AGM gives the Registrar the potential to strike your Centre (become struck off) from the Registrar.

There is also a requirement to upload a copy of your Centre’s constitution. If your Centre has not updated its constitution following the Netball restructure in 2012, your constitution is now out of date. All Centre constitutions should have been updated after 2012.

If you have any questions or queries please contact Community Netball Manager, Geni Tuilagi or CEO, Brigit Hearn.

UPDATE: METRO SPORTS FACILITY

On Friday 20 April, the Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration, Dr Megan Woods, announced the outcome of the Metro Sports Facility (MSF) review and has confirmed that the business case for the city’s new stadium will be fast-tracked.

The design of the MSF facility has been revised to save costs both operationally and for taxpayers/ratepayers long-term without compromising on its functionality. Through the revised design, savings of more than $50 million have been made by reducing unnecessary cosmetic design features. It will still have nine indoor courts (including show court and seating) and a 10-lane, 50-metre pool, a fitness centre and other indoor studios.

MSF is scheduled to open in late 2021.

There is more detail about this announcement on Newsline.

COMMUNITY

COACH DEVELOPMENT

Our Silvermoon Tactix and Hellers Beko girls are preparing for their first games on 6 May 2018 and 13 May 2018. We are all excited to see the mana in each of every one of our athletes and coaching staff on display, as they play the game we all love. With that said, coaching at performance and high-performance level are the final stages of the NNZ coaching framework. We would like to provide opportunities for our community coaches to gain a perspective of what it is like to coach at these levels. Please keep your eyes pierced on our Netball Mainland facebook, to sign up for such opportunities on the following dates, 10 June 2018, 17 June 2018 and 15 July 2018. This is a great way to see the game in action, meet our Silvermoon Tactix and Hellers Beko coaching staff, as well as gain more learning opportunities as a coach. Therefore, get in quick and sign up, as there are only few spots available.

NETBALLSMART

For tournament settings, like at Secondary Schools, NetballSmart have designed the ‘Power Warm-up’. We advise that you start your day with the full dynamic warm-up but then do the power warm-up prior to each game during the remainder of the day. The power warm-up takes 5-6 minutes and is 8-exercises.

Social netballers! Want to know how to effectively warm up your body in as least amount of time as possible whilst performing all the required netball movements??!! Learn more about the Social Power Warm-up today!

A NOTE FROM THE COACH

Selections for Games

When selecting for a game each week there are a lot of things to take into consideration.

• Who are the best players in each position • Who has trained well each week • If players have attended all trainings • What type of combinations have been working well together • Who the opposition are and their style of play • Whether it is a development opportunity • Whether there is somebody who isn’t allowed to play a full game due to ongoing injury or coming back from injury • What style of umpires that you have for the game And the list goes on…..

The best thing you can do is be upfront and honest with all your players about what will be happening and certain scenarios. If it is a school group you coach, one thing I would recommend is to have a meeting with all parents at the beginning of the year and outline all your policies for selection etc

I believe one thing we need to do is empower all our younger athletes to have conversations around things that are annoying them about selection etc . It would be great if they could talk any issues through with their parents and then have a chat directly to the coach.

As coach we need to build up a relationship with the players so that ideally they will come to us. I believe you need to model this by being upfront and speaking honestly and directly.

A couple of techniques to help the players learn skills to build up to those conversations are

• Group work where the girls work together and report back • Work in pairs and report back • Get the players to give each other feedback to each other at the end of training • Get the players to give you feedback all the time-after trainings, at certain checkpoints We are counting down to our first game this weekend. We are very exciting- it has been a long road. The work has been done and now we need to put it out there!

I hope you will join us for some home games as we really need your support.

Marianne
