Soccer has spread to every corner of the world and although it is not the most popular game everywhere, it is without a doubt the most popular sport in the world. This popularity of the sport has allowed for money to be poured into the game, both by sponsors and fans. The economics of the game have created a more competitive atmosphere within the sport. The competitive nature of the sport attracts more players every year from everywhere in the world. -

Ligue 1 2014/2015: Your Guide to the Season Ahead
Ligue 1 2014/2015: Your Guide to the Season Ahead Get French Football News A Note from the Editor: From Copacabana beach to the Stade Auguste Delaune: Ligue 1 kicks off again on the 8th of August when Reims host back-to-back champions Paris Saint Germain in the first encounter of the new season. The summer brought with it one of the most wholesome World Cups in recent history, where Ligue 1 stars both thrived and blossomed. Whether you were marveling at David Ospina or Guillermo Ochoa between the sticks, noting the potential of Serge Aurier or appreciating the sheer brilliance of James Rodriguez, it seemed that wherever one turned; the spirit of France’s top flight was being embodied by some of its most emblematic characters. While the majority of the aforementioned stars will undoubtedly move on this summer, Ligue 1 is not standing still. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is ready to lead PSG to Champions League glory, regardless of the supposed limitations that Financial Fair Play regulations have imposed on the Ligue 1 champions. The seasonal managerial merry-go-round has gone some way to reshuffling the pack and Willy Sagnol, Marcelo Bielsa, Hubert Fournier, Claude Makélélé, Leonardo Jardim and Jean Luc Vasseur have all been handed fresh starts at various outfits. A new campaign brings with it three new sides. Ligue 1 welcomes back an eclectic bunch of former stalwarts with open arms in Metz, Caen and Lens. The latter club had the last laugh during a summer that may well be remembered for the administrative headaches that the French football watchdog the DNCG were causing, initially refusing Antoine Kombouaré’s men entry into France’s top flight. -

Ligue 1 2013/2014: Your Guide to the Season Ahead
Ligue 1 2013/2014: Your Guide to the Season Ahead Get French Football News A Note from the Editor: The transfer window begins to pick up pace as we head to its business end, the month of August. However, there is something that enthuses and excites me far more: football is back. As I look back on last season, in many ways, I wish we could merely repeat it. Whether it was PSG’s magical Champions League run, Saint Etienne’s monumental Coupe de la Ligue win or sitting there on a bleak November evening watching Reims’s utterly mundane goalless draw with Brest; the 2012/2013 campaign had it all and with some to spare. Undoubtedly, the majority of the footballing media will next season focus frustratingly on AS Monaco’s performances as they look to criticise and accuse them of ‘ruining football’. Frankly, it is an all too familiar stance that has been reiterated these past months, and Monaco have yet to kick a ball. Justly or unjustly so, Monaco will bring competition that will undeniably raise the quality of football in Ligue 1 and give the league a larger following worldwide. However, if there is one thing I want you to take away from the introduction to the Get French Football News Season Preview it is this: try and look past Monaco. Instead, observe what Philippe Montanier may achieve as he looks to revolutionise Rennes and turn them into a consistent European power; take an interest in the exceptional batch of young French talent that currently dominates Lyon’s squad; applaud the way in which Marseille have set about recruiting this summer and take heed of the way Lorient attempt to play and the exceptional example that President Loic Fery is setting in how to run a modern football club. -
