GLEBE JAFC 2015 YEARBOOK 3 GLEBE GREYHOUNDS JAFC President’s report Pr esident’s report PRESIDENT PETER GOWERS

The 2015 Glebe Greyhounds season will be remembered for a number of important achievements (in no particular order): • 6 teams making it all the way to the Grand Final. A Club record! • The provision of a magnificent range of Club merchandise. Thank you Dan H. • The beginnings of a Greyhounds Youth Girls team. Thank you Jason H. • The services of our first official Head Coach. Thank you Joe B. • A record number of registered players – 344. Thank you everyone. • 2 tremendous AFL holiday footy camps – with no loss of life! • A record number of Jubilee Oval ground closures – thank you Mother Nature!

Thanks to the tireless efforts of a number of parents, players and volunteers. Jubilee Oval functioned like a well-oiled machine in 2015. When we all work together Glebe JAFC is unstoppable and everyone involved in the Club should be congratulated for their efforts.

ON THE FIELD As noted above, 2015 witnessed a record number of players wearing the Black & White with 344 players putting their hand up to play for the Greyhounds this season. It is great to see the Club growing. We also appointed our first Head Coach, Joey Britton who did a great job in raising the standard of coaching in the Club. Our Head Coach’s efforts were clearly reflected in all our teams’ performances this year. Full details of the season enjoyed by all our teams are set out in the very well written team reports contained in later in this Yearbook. Thank you also to our Club Captains for 2015, Henry Lamshed and William Gowers for the contribution they both made to the Club in 2015 and throughout their careers with the Club.

None of the above achievements would have occurred without the effort and dedication of our coaching staff, parents and volunteers. A HUGE thank you to all coaches, assistant coaches, managers, runners, water carriers, boundary umpires, goal umpires, timekeepers, photographers and all others who assisted our teams this year.

OFF THE FIELD Each year somehow Mr Don Chudleigh continues to increase his commitment and contribution to the Club and it seems his capacity to give is unlimited. A mammoth vote of thanks to Don for his amazing efforts again this year for our Club.

Thank you to all those who assisted with serving behind the counter, cutting rolls, slicing onions, buying supplies and turning sausages. A special thank you to Mr Mark Gibbins for organising our coffee (and oyster) requirements and his team of baristas, Lachlan White (former Club Vice Captain) and Billy Chudleigh!

Thank you also to Peter & Fiona Clarke for their tremendous work in the canteen and particularly the hugely successful “Thursday Night Tucker”. Well done to Michael Dunlop for re-instating the Dishlicker – many talked about it Michael but you did it! The contributions of our marvellous sponsors Belle Property Glebe, The Merton Bistro and the Coffee Roasters must also be acknowledged. Your support of our Club is most appreciated and is vital for our continued success. Please support our sponsors who support us.

The Club could not function without its dedicated and hard working committee and the gratitude of the Club should be extended to Jason Howard, Kirsty Bass-Tracey, Claudia Kearns, Gabrielle Brown, Luke Macdougall, Maxine Bartlett, Don Chudleigh, Joe Britton, Dan Hennessy, Frazer Adam, Jarryd Boyd, Michael Dunlop, Mark Gibbins and Brad Scutella for the time and effort they have put into the Club in 2015. It has been a pleasure working with such hard working, thoughtful and intelligent people. We are again privileged to be the recipients of a fabulous Glebe Greyhounds Yearbook. A great deal of hard work goes into creating this wonderful journal. A huge thank you to Jamie Lamshed for his amazing effort in producing the last seven years of beautiful yearbooks. Thank you to this year’s yearbook team; Diane Adair (publishing guru), Warwick Moss (statistic guru) and Maxine Bartlett (all round guru) for their tremendous efforts in putting this fantastic publication together.

Farewell to those U17s leaving us. You have made a lasting and positive contribution to the Club. Good luck in all you do and do not forget the lessons you have learned at the Greyhounds.

2016 promises to be another fantastic year at Glebe JAFC and I urge you all to “GET INVOLVED”. Go the Greyhounds !

GLEBE JAFC 2015 YEARBOOK 17 GLEBE GREYHOUNDS JAFC Auskick coordinator’s report Auskick COORDINATOR KIRSTY BASS

I think I have the best job in the club. I get to spend Saturday mornings with the most enthusiastic bunch of kids, always happy, smiling and ready to tell me all sorts of interesting footy facts about their favourite teams. My mornings regularly start with “Kirsty did you know...”

We started the year with a bang for our Glebe Greyhounds Jumper Presentation. It was so great to see how excited the kids were waiting for the Swans to arrive. They were super patient and the rousing rendition of the Greyhounds song was amazing. The kids got to meet Harry Cunningham and Jack Hiscox from the Swans. Jack Hiscox started his AFL career as a Glebe Greyhound coming through as an Auskicker. We are so proud as a club to have a Greyhound as a Swan.

Through the year we had our U8s represent us at the Half-Time Auskick at the SCG during the AFL games. This rite of passage for our U8s is such an important and exciting event for the kids. The year kicked off with the NAB Cup with our kids playing at Drummoyne Oval with the Swans v Fremantle. The kids were lucky enough to also be involved in a pre-game clinic as well with the AFL. We had kids at the Swans v Richmond game at the SCG Friday 26th June and again for Swans v on Saturday the 5th September. It is such a great opportunity, there are free tickets to the game, the kids use the change rooms at the SCG and run onto the SCG at half-time to play an Auskick game against another inner city club. The atmosphere is always electric and the kids and parents love it. Get ready U7s as it is your turn next year!!

Level O training was provided by the AFL once again to induct all our new parents into the world of hand passing and kicking. This annual event is proving to be fantastic in getting our parents ready to be backyard warriors with their kids.

With a home game every 2nd Saturday down at Jubilee the U5s and U6s families were kept very busy with set-up for our Saturday games at 7am. The record we managed this year was 36 minutes for set-up of 5 footy grounds, the BBQ cooking, marquees pitched, goal posts protected, rolls cut and music blaring. I know I am biased but I think we have the best ground and clubhouse around, although the toilets could be a little better!! I’m sure on those sunny mornings, opposition teams arriving at Jubilee for the 8.10am start could not but be jealous of our home ground facilities.

Thank you to all the Auskick coaches and managers who make the kids and parents experience so good. Special mention goes to Mike Schofield our U5 coach this year. U5s is always a baptism by fire and stepping up from the parent body to coach does take courage. Mike did a fantastic job and we look forward to an explosion in U6 numbers next year. Another big thank you to Peter and Fiona Clark for restocking our canteen in the weeks between all our training and games. And as fantastic as ever, our catering manager, Don Chudleigh. Thank you to all the parents and carers who did their shifts on the canteen during the year. I like to think that we are contributing to keeping your minds active with the mental arithmetic needed behind the canteen.

I look forward to another great year and look back on a really happy club of which I am proud to be a part.

COACH MIKE SCHOFIELD

COACH’S REPORT COACH Mike Schofield Sport has a wonderful effect on children, and there were many times this season when I found it hard to believe that these players running around in pre-school and kindergarten during the week PRESENTATION AWARDS were the same ones running on the field as a cohesive team on a Saturday. Best And Fairest Callen Thomas It took us a little while to get there, but in the second half of the season there were some really Golden Boot Leo Leitl good and exciting games. Everybody’s skill levels improved as time went on, and there were lots (Top Forward) of memorable moments as courageous marks were taken from high balls, intelligent use of the handball materialised, looking for and passing to players in space became part of the game, and Clubman of the Year Evan Wildin even a bounce on gala day to top things off! Best Defender Liam Seymour We had five late enrolments during the second half of the season, all of whom slotted in really well Midfield Maestro Ioanni Titmuss and performed to a high level for the team. I was so impressed by the enthusiasm of this group. Most Courageous Charlie Meldrum Barring sickness there wasn’t much that kept them away from training and Saturday matches, and it was the beaming smiles, willingness to learn and rousing singing that made it a privilege Most Competitive Nic Crosbie-Smyth and pleasure to be their coach. Persistence Award Hannah Raco There’s some real talent amongst these children, and for those that haven’t quite got there yet, Most Enthusiastic Sam Evans enthusiasm already has them half way there. So I hope they all make it back next year a little Biggest Improver Sam Goldwater stronger and with a summer of kicking the footy under their belt, showing the new recruits how it’s done. Fastest Mover Lewis Schofield Ever Present Award Henry Schmidt Iron Hands Award Riley Holland (Best Mark) Most Exciting Player Nate Gollan Most Potential Caelan Cosgriff

CAELAN COSGRIFF In a consistent season, in which he only missed one match, Caelan had a particularly memorable breakout game against Maroubra Saints in round 5 for which he received the days encouragement award. He was on fire, sharking the ball all over the place, listening well to the coach, kicking on the run in only his second game and getting his first taste of goal-scoring. Looking forward to seeing more of that skill in 2016!

NICOLAS CROSBIE-SMYTH Duck for cover or risk a thick ear when Nicolas has the ball, as he is without doubt the mightiest kick on the team. Invaluable providing rebound from defence, and a gutsy ball magnet all over the park, he found the goal regularly, particularly in the second half of the season. As well as a strong leg, he also proved to have strong lungs, taking great delight in belting out the club song each week… beware karaoke hosts everywhere!

SAM EVANS Sam set a fine example on the team, always smiling, he made every match and just about every training. He notched a goal in the first game, then took a bit of a hiatus to feed his glory hunting team mates with scoring chances before going out with a flourish of majors in the last few games. Sam has all the foundations to be a really good player, he loves the game, and six months of steak and chips dinners will see him return bigger and stronger, ready to terrorise the opposition. 20 GLEBE JAFC 2014 YEARBOOK U5s

COACH CAIN SARAH

COACH’S REPORT COACH Cain Sarah It is difficult to know where to start when trying to convey what a fantastic season the under 6s TEAM COACHES Jack Finisterer had in 2015. Week in week out we had the largest number of kids which often resulted in lending Nick Cummins players to opposition teams or Jack running his now famous (but brutal) intra club matches TEAM MANAGER Stephanie Williams pitting mate against mate. Quite a few of the under 5s from 2014 returned however there were over 25 debutants all of whom showed amazing improvement as the season progressed. PRESENTATION AWARDS Each week we tried to get the kids focussed on 1 to 2 things we wanted to see improved and they did this without question. By the end of the season kids that initially could barely kick a footy Most Determined Jack Ahie-Slattery were kicking drop punts lace out to forwards, taking contested marks and running bounces and Joint Best and Fairest Gus Ammit generally showing all the attributes and skills of Australia Rules football. So I would like to say Most Likely to Harrison a massive thank you to all the kids for turning up each week, giving it your best and really doing Succeed Broderick the Glebe Greyhounds proud. JACK AHIE SLATTERY The most determined 6 year old you are ever likely to see. Chased down everything and has a real knack for brining team mates into the game. Also very close to best and fairest.

GUS AMMITT A true star. His improvement had to be seen to be believed. Can do it all. By season’s end he was taking contested marks, running bounces, kicking to team mates and slamming through more than the odd goal.

MAGNUS BARR Like his name suggests, a huge talent and player of the future. Also an extremely devoted trainer.

HARRISON BRODERICK Unfortunately lost to the USA, Harry is a gun. He will be a star of the future, no doubt. His only possible undoing is the fact he supports the pies.

ASTON CLARK-HOLLY Again, a huge improver. Probably the best and most consistent trainer of the group.

BLAKE CLIFT Improved his concentration out of sight with his best game coming late in the season against Easts where he was everywhere, showing what he is capable of.

WILL CUMMINS Like the Dogs that he follows, the big issue was holding Will back from wanting to tear opposition teams apart. Super aggressive and hard at the ball – traits that will hold him in good stead in later years. Gave a lot of drive from the midfield also kicking more than his fair share of goals.

GEORGE CURRIE Just pipped by Gus for best and fairest. George is an excellent player with very good natural ability and a terrific understanding of the game.

LACHLAN WILLIAMS Goal of the year. Literally flew through the air evading defender after defender to slam it through the big sticks. The smile remained on his face for the remainder of the game.

HOUNDS – PRESENTATION AWARDS There were many other season highlights for the U9s. There were the standout games that will live long in our memories, like the Hounds playing Maroubra Red at Heffron with Thomas kicking goals Most Goals Will Kenny and George stopping a certain goal and winning the game in his first game for the Hounds after Best Forward Nicholas Andreacchio coming across from the Whites; the Blacks and Newtown Gold at Henson Park when Harry took a beautiful pack mark at full forward on the siren with Glebe two points down; and of course the long Best Midfielder Oliver O’Callaghan standing rivalry between the Whites and Drummoyne Teal which switched back Glebe’s favour after Best Defender Jack Jury trouncing them in the Gala Day.

CHARLIE BASS TRACY Charlie, like everyone in the team, played in all positions throughout the year but it was in the centre that he made the biggest impact. He’s a natural outside player who likes tackling, and his standout game this year was against nemesis team Newtown Gold who were all over us in the first half. Charlie received coach’s instructions to play tight on their best player and he restricted him to no possessions after half time, not by tagging but by playing in front and being first to the ball. Great work Charlie.

HENRY DANIELS There are a couple of players who standout in the team because of their positive attitude, willingness to listen and hard work, and Henry is one of those players. When the coach asks Henry to play a certain way or do a certain job, Henry performs it to the letter, but it’s his leadership on the field by doing little things like reminding players to mark their opponents, or leading into space or picking up lose players that has won him this award. LUCA COONEY The goal king. A beautiful long kick of the ball that produced many goals during the year. He is an unselfish player handing the ball over if another player had a better position to take a shot. Highlights would be 2 goals against old foes Drummoyne in the gala’s, one was from nearly half way. He has a knack for creating space & giving himself time to decide on the best options. Sold the biggest candy of the year a number of times, what a great season Luca, keep the practice up in the off season.

RUPERT GILLIES It was a breakout season for Rupert. A very determined & driven player who is not scared of anything or anyone. GLEBE JAFC 2015 YEARBOOK 39 MATISSE LIU Matisse developed her game strongly in the second half of the season. It has been a huge transition this year with the size of the ground doubling & the introduction of tackling. Matisse, once mastering these new facets of the game, resumed her role as the cool calm head & a leader of the side playing her best under pressure. Matisse excelled from the midfield dishing out good & timely hand balls. She has a strong team sense & plays accordingly for another brilliant season.

ROWAN O’CONNOR Rowan is a strong & physical footy player tough at the ball. He is best getting stuck in at the ruck & trying to share the footy with his team mates. His ball disposal improved remarkably this year as well as making many long & decisive runs resulting in goals for the team. He wears his heart on his sleeve showing his passion for the game. He knows no other way than to give 110%. You can see on his face how much he loves working with the team, be very proud of your efforts Rowan.

COACH DAN KENNY

COACH’S REPORT COACH Daniel Kenny Premiers Sydney Harbour U11 City Division 2 ASSISTANT Cameron Jackson COACHES Kevin Lum What a year! In our first year of competitive footy, the young men of the U11 Greyhounds thrived. Brad Scutella We won the premiership, won the minor premiership, won 11 out of 13 home and away games, MANAGER Paul Kitchin scored a massive 1065 points, including 163 goals, and conceded a miserly 420 points. Our percentage in the home and away season was a truly astounding 249%, an effort that would impress even Alistair Clarkson! PRESENTATION AWARDS But the stats only tell half the story. Far more than the wins and the trophies, it was the growing Best & Fairest Samuel Scutella maturity and determination of our players that really impressed the coaches. They brought a level Best & Fairest James Kenny of discipline and focus to training and games that we hadn’t seen before, and the improvement Runner Up in player skills and fitness showed that many were putting in the hours outside of training to improve their play. Most impressively, players such as Jacko and James demonstrated a reliable Rookie of the Year Oliver Matison kick off their non-preferred side, a skill which takes many, many hours of practice, while the Most Consistent Sebastien Procter improvement in kicking and marking skills of some of our new guys, such as Harry and Robbo, showed that they too were working hard to be better players. Most Improved Gabriel Quoyle Best team man Benjamin Baskin From the first game, our players lived by the mantra of playing hard and aggressive footy and moving the ball quickly. Our players showed a willingness to put their bodies on the line and take Leading goal kicker Harvey Lynn the fight to the opposition which is rarely seen in U11s footy. Samuel’s efforts to single-handedly (39) hold back the Newtown midfield in round 14 was the stand out performance, though the big bumps and heavy tackles were many and not far between. Some of the other standouts were James’ big bump in the first Concord game, which really set the standard for the season, Pat’s SYDNEY JUNIORS HARBOUR crunching shepherd to put Samuel away against Newtown, and Matthew throwing Moore Park Association Samuel Jackson midfielders around like they were rag dolls in the Quarter Final! Outstanding Achievement Award We started the season aiming to improve the speed with which we moved the ball, an objective which we definitely achieved. We moved the ball quickly and played on with confidence, ripping many an opposition apart and piling on some massive scores. This took teamwork across every CITY DEVELOPMENT TEAM part of the ground. Many a move started deep in the defence with Ben or Finn, was channelled REPRESENTATIVE through Baz or Jacko at half back, through Samuel and Baz in the midfield and onto Harvey, Olly or Gabriel up forward. The highlight of the year was a length of the field goal from Finn to Nick, Harvey Lynn James Kenny to Will to Harvey which turned defence into six points in about 20 seconds.

Teamwork was the other area which set our team apart. This year we specialised in positions MILESTONES and learnt the importance of doing your job and trusting your teammate to do theirs. We saw 50 Games Benjamin Baskin this in the superb defensive work of Finn, Pat and Ben in the backline, the hard two-way running off halfback from Jacko and Baz, the hard grunt work from midfielders such as Samuel, James, Hayden, Matthew and Blake and the dominant forward work from Cullen, Joey or Bowie. Our men showed a selflessness and dedication to the team through some fantastic shepherding work, by playing the less popular positions to their best or by setting up players in the hot spot rather than taking the shot ourselves. Combined with some really strong communication and working together, particularly in defence, it made us a force to be reckoned with.

Despite all of these fantastic outcomes, the greatest achievement of the team was introducing four new players to the team and to footy. Harry, Robbo, Olly and Bowie were welcomed to the team and taken under the tutelage of players like Samuel, James and Jacko. The leaps forward that they made in their skills were a result of the hard work that these players put in and the support that their teammates provided. Their performance in the Grand Final set us apart and was the perfect end to the year for a team that worked so hard for each other.

Well done on a fantastic year, we couldn’t be prouder of you! Taking the premiership was just reward for the maturity, teamwork and hard work that the team put in through the year. It’s been a pleasure coaching the team and we hope to see everyone back (with a few friends) to play again in 2016.

GAME OF THE YEAR: Round 5 v Concord – In the biggest game of the year at that stage, we had a healthy lead, but were still not safe at the last break. Then Harvey let loose, kicking four goals in ten minutes to absolutely blow Concord off the park. It was a stunning display of contested marking, fast play and accurate goal kicking!

COACH’S REPORT COACH Dan Hennessy Premiers Sydney Harbour U13 Division 3 MANAGER Bobbi Mahlab

After the annus horribilis that was 2014 I was somewhat anxious as Season 2015 came into view. Not surprisingly a number of guys that played with us in 2014 didn’t return. Some moved PRESENTATION AWARDS cities, some changed clubs, and some changed sports. Fortunately balancing the exodus was an Best and Fairest Abe Mahlab influx of new or returning players. Runner up B&F Max Hochuli The draw for 2015 had us playing a number of clubs we’d never encountered before; Manly, Best Team Man Clem Bicknell Heathcote, Ramsgate, Bangor and Willoughby Mosman. After two washouts, the wins continued with a highly contested Rookie Aiden Clark but scrappy victory over Penshurst. The Round 5 game vs Willoughby Mosman was for me the most significant game of the 2015 home and away season. I remember writing Effort Creates Opportunity on the white board prior to the game and effort was what we got. A 35 point victory REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS against a strong opponent. There wasn’t a lot of Runner up B&F feedback but everyone was aware there was a potential shot at a Premiership. GSJ U13 Div3 Third Max Hochuli There always seems to be one team that troubles and for us that was Easts. Round 11 was a runner up B&F hotly contested game with Glebe managing to scrape a narrow 8 point win. The next week North Ryde put up a solid showing but was again dispatched by our boys in commanding style. Round 14 and Bangor were unfortunate enough to run into a full strength and tough Greyhounds outfit MILESTONES bristling with confidence. 50 Games Max Hochuli

In round 13 Heathcote lost their first game of the season and Glebe went to top of the table. As I pointed out to the guys – it now made us the #1 target and the challenge was retain that position through consistent performances. At that point I really felt the extra effort and momentum from all involved really begin to kick in.

In the run home to the finals Easts again provided stiff opposition. In an attempt to shore up their own finals aspirations they ran a number of their Div 1 guys against us. This was a tense and exciting game. Glebe led all game but a rally in the 3rd and 4th quarters by Easts pegged it back and on the siren Glebe prevailed by a single point. GLEBE JAFC 2015 YEARBOOK 59 ANGUS CADOGAN A quietly passionate footballer and team player, Angus spent most of the season as one of the tight knit and miserly defensive outfit where his bigger body and experience of 2014 contributed greatly. A second year player Angus worked hard on his fitness throughout the season and in the latter games spent time positioned further up field on the wing where he seemed well suited. A great team player very much liked and admired by his comrades, Angus has huge potential and is primed to deliver a break through season in 2016.

BEN HENNESSY Injury curtailed much of Ben’s season. It wasn’t until round 14 that he was fully fit and was then was a little rusty and out of match practice. However, his form returned just when needed most and his positional play, organisational command and fearless attack on the opposition and football payed dividends in defence during the finals. GLEBE JAFC 2015 YEARBOOK 61 DAIRE FILITONGA Daire’s contribution was again invaluable. As key position forward Daire is often the target for forward 50 entries and his 20 goals for the season in the 12 games he played shows just how important it is to have him there. Daire’s form fluctuated during the season but like many others he proved to be a big game player and when finals time came he stepped up and produced the best performances of his season. He was particularly good in the Grand Final and proved a handful for the Heathcote defence. Another great year accentuated by his inclusion in the City Reps squad.

DANIEL LOVIBOND Dan came on a transfer from Newtown. A regular all year at training Dan’s skill level and aggression at the ball and opponents increased markedly as the season progressed. Again like many others he saved his best to last and during the finals campaign presented a physicality to his game that contributed greatly to the forward line pressure where he was stationed and gained the respect of his teammates. A massive effort from Dan in 2015 has seen him establish an excellent foundation off which to build further in 2016. I’m looking forward to seeing how far you can go. GLEBE JAFC 2015 YEARBOOK 63 TOM BROWN Another of the old firm Tom Brown had what I’d call a break out season. I recall watching Tom cover 60 meters in a flat chat sprint in the warm up game against Wests – knowing then that if we could harness that focus and effort we had a new weapon at our disposal. With Max Hochuli now permanently in the Ruck and Clem at Half back Tom was able to go forward. Using his size and agility down low, Tom played a small forwards game in the body of the biggest guy on the field. Result = carnage for the defence. Tom missed a large chunk of the early season through injury but upon returning his game went from strength to strength. Once he had ball in hand Tom was unstoppable often barnstorming toward goal literally shaking off defenders. Wet weather football is his forte and as the rain came down hard in the Grand Final we released the shackles. Tom came up the half forward line and created havoc with his size and aggression at the ball. Tom landed several massive 40+ meter goals during the season including a set shot in the rain during the final quarter of the Grand Final to sink Heathcote’s aspirations. It’s always exciting when Tom gets the ball and I already can’t wait to see what he does in 2016.

TOM GREANEY While not his first year at Glebe we hadn’t seen much of him before the season. Tom started off the year well with solid performances against Penshurst and Willoughby/Mosman. Unfortunately we lost him to a broken wrist in May against Heathcote and didn’t see him again until the finals were almost on us. Tom worked hard to get back into the squad and was great to see him regularly at training and the kicking clinics. Tom played a great role in the Finals campaign and despite not being one of the bigger guys he is courageous and gets involved physically in the contest. As they say you can’t teach that. Tenacity and a desire for the ball is the first quality one looks for as coach and Tom has that in spades. With a full preseason and a Premiership medal I hope to see Tom lining up for the Greyhounds in 2016.

COACH BRAD SCUTELLA

COACH’S REPORT COACH Brad Scutella What a cracking season from a great bunch of players. ASSISTANT David Alais COACH This was a massive season of change for our Under 15s boys. We had a large number of boys MANAGER Roger Bluett come over from Drummoyne and Concord as well as two players from Newtown, two boarders from Joeys and another two players from Pennant Hills. We combined to form two great teams. The boys got on well from the get go to form one complete cohesive unit. As a coach seeing the PRESENTATION AWARDS creation of these friendships this was the most pleasing part of the season. Best and Fairest Che Munro To show how genuine these boys were we started pre-season training in January and kept on Runner Up B&F Jojo Howard-Shibuya going through to our defeat in the semi final in August. A massive season. A big thank you to Oscar Osborne, former club champion and current Sydney Uni NEAFL player, for taking the time Best Team Man James Scutella out and taking the boys for pre-season training. Most Consistent Jordan de Vries We structured the Div 1 and Div 3 teams to try and ensure both teams had the best chance of Most Improved Ewan McDonald being successful. And it worked. A big thank you to Joey Britton for coming up with the idea Leading Goalkicker Miles Glover (33) of playing 16 on the field and two on the bench in Div 1. This enabled the Div 3 team to be a standalone team with supplementation from the Div 1 team as required. Though opposition Div 1 teams didn’t like our initiative, it meant both teams were competitive. The proof was in the results REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS at the end of the season. Our Div 1 team made it to the semi finals and our Div 3 team made it to the Grand Final. A superb effort from an outstanding bunch of players. Miles Glover Tom Linfield Kent Che Munro Finn Crowley Div 1 boys played against some of the best players in NSW and acquitted themselves well. The Sydney Harbour Competition is much more competitive than the Western Sydney competition. The boys acquitted themselves well in the toughest competition in their age group in NSW. We MILESTONES won six games lost eight. We had to win our last two games to finish fourth and we did. Our two 200 Games James Scutella close losses against Manly/Pittwater could have changed that ratio around significantly however it wasn’t meant to be. We were competitive and acquitted ourselves well in the losses. 150 Games Billy Chudleigh 100 Games Silvan Bluett These boys have consistently made the semi finals or the grand final over the last five years. Jojo Howard-Shibuya Quite proudly the boys kept this record intact. Hopefully next year we can go one better.

Our unsung hero for the season is definitely Roger Bluett. Roger worked tirelessly for our boys UMPIRES this year and went well beyond doing normal management duties. He organised lifts for boys to and from games and training, organised parents on the BBQ, canteen, liaised with opposition Tom Stapleton team management re various issues, constantly updated team sheets due to late outs and at the same time copped heaps of abuse and handled it like a true statesman from opposing teams. Roger’s calmness and organisation was outstanding.

Other parents chipped in as well (and I am sorry if I don’t mention everyone), Andrew Adams for goal umpiring, Richard Glover for running the line, Dermott Crowley, Adrian Searle and David Alais for being runners, Nick Potter photography, Craig and Mary Kent canteen and First Aid, Maus canteen, Dave Byrne for his surveillance on the opposition, Don for doing everything else, de Vries family for picking up boys, Anghos McDonald for packing up, Bill Lees medical assistance and Kevin Munro for assisting on Indigenous issues. Also thank you to the Div 3 boys who came down to cheer on their mates and water running.

Most of all a big thank you to a fine bunch of young men who played so well all season. I was impressed by their maturity, mateship and attitude. Once again it was a privilege to coach you.

See you next year.

COACH DAVID ALAIS

COACH’S REPORT COACH David Alais Grand Finalists Sydney Harbour U15 Division 3 ASSISTANT Adrian Searle COACH Dekka Adams The Under 15 Div 3 Greyhounds can look back on season 2015 with great satisfaction. From a difficult start we got better and better with every game and finished up in a grand final that MANAGER Laurie Patton we nearly won. As coach, I look back at the continual improvement over the year with great satisfaction, but I know the real credit goes to the players for working hard to improve and for sticking out a season that brought a number of challenges. PRESENTATION AWARDS Best and Fairest Philippe Alais For the first time, 2015 saw this group split into Div 1 and Div 3 teams and with scarcely enough players for two full squads this made for a difficult start to the season. In true Greyhound spirit we Runner Up B&F Griff Taylor put our heads down and made the best of it, recruiting a couple of hardy rugby players from St Best Team Man Tyler Fuata Josephs and gaining some great new imports from Drummoyne and Concord. Rounding out the team were some ever reliable Under 14s players who backed up for a second game and some Most Consistent Rory Potter tired Div 1 players who played again in Div 3. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped with Most Improved Michael Fiadino player numbers to keep the team afloat this year. Leading Goalkicker Philippe Alais (24) With so many new players, the first challenge as coach was to find their best position, and for the boys to get to know each other’s game. After some shuffling in the first few games the boys started to look at home in their new positions and the teamwork start to gel. Indeed, teamwork MILESTONES was one of the features of this team: they were a selfless playing group with no ball hogs and 50 Games Mikey Grove everyone shared the ball around. Another impressive aspect of this group was the on-field leadership. There were several players who showed they were prepared to lead from the front, encourage their team mates and proactively organise the team when our structures were under pressure.

We didn’t know it early in the season but the team’s ability to share the ball around would turn out to be the key to beating the bigger, taller sides we encountered in the finals. As one of the smaller teams in the competition, we were outsized in the finals but we were not outgunned. When the ball had to be won on the ground, the boys were tenacious and fierce competitors. This was clear to everyone who saw the finals games who were full of praise for your efforts. Once we had the ball in hand, we shared it around quickly and out ran our lumbering opponents. It was very gratifying for me to see the boys seriously challenged in the finals, yet still find a way to win.

The end of the season was definitely the high point. We’d been on a rising trajectory all year and it peaked in the final series. It was great to see the focused intent on your faces and the total four-quarter efforts you put in. You really stepped it up for the finals and enjoyed two hard-fought and very satisfying wins in the semi finals. The committed effort you gave in the Grand Final was sensational: high intensity, full commitment, and a disciplined four-quarter effort. In the end it wasn’t enough to claim victory over a very good footy team that finished the year undefeated. Still, it was a close game and you can hold your heads high and be very proud of yourselves, just as I was proud of your efforts as coach. You are clearly on an upward trajectory and I can’t wait to see that improvement continue in season 2016.

COACH FRAZER ADAMS

COACH’S REPORT COACH Frazer Adams Well, it would have been nice to win a couple more games this year. We lost some by close ASSISTANT Dekka Adams margins and there were a few blow outs. We had 2 consecutive washouts early in the season COACH Jarryd Boyd which made it hard to maintain consistency. MANAGER Maxine Bartlett Pre season started with some beach work at Coogee and some boxing training at Sweatbox. We got to play a night game at Manly [more on them later] and a trip out to Rooty Hill saw us playing PRESENTATION AWARDS on Blacktown International Sports Ground. Best and Fairest William Gowers It was great to see the boys grow throughout the year. Whoop got stronger, Joe’s tap work got Runner Up B&F William Stewart better, Ned’s leadership skills in the back half kept improving, Gabe grew into the midfield spot and wasn’t letting go, Sonic-o-Sonic did everything asked of him, ran with the mids, led with Best Team Man Gabe Beech-Jones the forwards, ran and ran and I mean busted a gut running. Henry flew higher and higher, Rhino Most Consistent Joe Stapleton bled, Lenny took a punch and earned himself a footy. We introduced new game plans through the season, having the boys play specific roles on the field. We saw this take their game to a new Most Determined James Dunlop level, understanding the strategy behind the idea, and working hard as a team to get results. Most Improved Ned Taranto

Part of coaching the team was teaching the boys that the game is more than just kicking goals. Leading Goalkicker Henry Lamshed (25) Taking responsibility for posting availability on Facebook meant I could plan the starting line up, manage emergencies, pick a runner for the day [which Mark Gardiner took over as our players fell, big thanks Mark] or work out who was running water. Injuries, sickness, operations, MILESTONES concussions, HSC, overseas holidays and ski trips hampered our plans through the season, 200 Games James Dunlop tearing our starting squad of 27 down to just 16 available for one match. Thanks to Chudders, Magpie, JoJo and Tom S from the 15s for boosting our numbers and slotting right in. 150 Games Henry Lamshed Oisin Filitonga My highlight of the season was heading towards the end of the year with 3 rounds to go. We Jack Devonshire knew realistically that the first two games were going to be difficult – Newtown/Wests and Oliver Ashby Cronulla, so we set ourselves the task of winning the last game against Manly, who had beaten 100 Games Daragh Mullen us twice during the season, once by 10 points, and once by just 5. What a feeling to watch the Jack Gardiner boys play for each other, work for each other, follow the game plan, take on their roles and keep Oliver Ashby Manly goalless in the last quarter. It was a hard fought game, on their home turf, but we led the whole way and came out 28 point victors. We could sing the song proudly for those boys leaving 50 Games Luke Astri us this year. This was our Grand Final. UMPIRES This year I think the boys learnt more than just football skills. They faced some challenging situations and worked out how to manage difficult times. Coming together as a team, supporting Will Stewart each other on and off the field, learning how to talk and ask for help, knowing that these boys will be mates for life, was something special to watch.

And so to say thank you. To my assistant coaches – Dekka and Jarryd – with their great football minds, working on game plans, setting training drills to get the boys moving. Their help was invaluable. I watched the boys respond to instruction and coaching from these two young men who gave up their own time to give back to a club they love. Thank you to Peter and Geoff for backing up again from last year, covering goal and boundary umpire duties each week. Thank you Mark Gardiner for taking on the running duties, and Michael Dunlop for bringing the water bottles – even when his own son wasn’t playing. All the parents and families need a big thank you for running their boys around and supporting the team at games. And last but by no means least, thank you so much to Maxine for being manager/organiser/communicator/superwoman and loudest supporter! It has been great to work with you over the past two years. The club is going to miss you and they will be big boots to fill.

Charlie is a forwards if you want anyone to take a 4 v 1 contested towering over pretty much everyone. Joe’s nightmare, never letting his opponent get an mark Henry’s your guy. A brilliant leader on tap work around the ground usually gave us inch of space and when they do he generally and off the field Henry will definitely move on first use of the ball aiding in our attacking play. gets the better of them. to greater things in senior footy. Our most consistent player this year and well deserved. CONNOR SMITH ISAAC MAHLAB One of the biggest improvers in the team Diesel is an absolute champ for making the LACHLAN DAVIS this year, Connor would always deliver with regular commute up from Victoria to play for Coming down with glandular fever didn’t contested possessions and goal saving us. Always a pleasure to have you martialing really help Lachy’s season this year but it tackles, a menace off the half back line. the troops from the back-line. was always great to see him on game day supporting the boys. Also providing top DARAGH MULLEN ISAAC WALLIS banter from the sidelines. An absolute pleasure to coach you this Rabbit, we’re gonna miss you mate, everyone year. Daragh would without a doubt leave loves the way you play footy and you’ve been LENNY PARSONS everything on the paddock. Supreme skills a solid addition to the team. Lenny was our go to tagger if we needed an and a killer stare down, Patty would be proud opposition player shut down. Always kept his of what you achieved this year. JACK DEVONSHIRE man to minimal touches even after getting J.D is a coach’s dream, always up and about punched in the face. ready to take on his next role for the team. Leads the pre game chant brilliantly as well.

GLEBE JAFC 2015 YEARBOOK 81 LUKE ASTRI OLIVER ASHBY Luke really stepped up in leadership this year, Just a solid backman, ready to take the game a great talker and really led by example not on. A notable performance was his game only on the field but at training as well. Yea against Penshurst were he cut off countless Luke stepped up in leadership but could he attacks with brilliant contested marks, polled get to anything on time..... Nope. a lot of votes in that game mate.

MICHAEL KENNEDY RAPHY WEIR With Aaron out we had to put Mickey K at full It really sucked that Raphy could only back and he stepped up to the task, cutting manage a few games this year, plagued with off countless opposition attacks and bursting a season ending shoulder injury. But when out of the back-line with pace always getting Raphy played he always provided a physical boot to ball. presence and great running play.

MURALI CHINNAPPA RYAN MARTIN Another one of our strong back six, Murali Rhino really worked hard on his game this always read the play well knowing when to year especially his kicking. He would always punch or when to mark. Hampered by ankle run and run and run until he was buggered injuries Murali always played at 100% and and had to run himself to the bench. Ryan’s never slowed down. last few games of the season really showed how much he’s improved on his skills. NED TARANTO Mr. Reliable, we could always rely on Ned to WILL STEWART win the crucial one on one contests or take Outstanding year for Sonic, runner up in the that mark on the goal line or make that tackle best and fairest shows that. A versatile player or make that spoil, I could go on forever but who shone in any position we played him in; I’m only allowed a few sentences. midfield, half back-line or up forward, Will would always impact the game in his own OISIN FILITONGA special way. Everyone loves the way Osh goes about his footy, always a good laugh on and off the WILLIAM GOWERS field. Oisin could go from kicking goal of the Whoop had a lot of special treatment from year to missing a shot from the top of the goal opposition teams this year but he didn’t let square and that’s what we love about Osh. that get to him and he would always bounce up and get on with it. Moving from the half back line into the midfield really helped him develop his inside game. Winning the best and fairest by a fair margin this year showed how he dominated this season.
