Donate now! We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Hugh Davidson, a true friend of the Canadian Music Centre.

Hugh Davidson was a champion of Canadian culture and the impact of his life's work was truly global. Hugh was a long-time Voting Member of the Canadian Music Centre.

"Hugh was a tireless and extraordinary volunteer for CMC BC for many years. Even after he moved to Victoria, Hugh would travel back to Vancouver every week to continue his volunteer work. His 70th birthday celebration created many new relationships with donors to CMC BC that continue to this day." Colin Miles, former BC Regional Director of the CMC.

"Music had a special place in Hugh's heart. Hugh refused to celebrate his 70th birthday until I suggested that we make it a fundraiser for CMC BC," said long- time friend and colleague Linda Johnson.

Originally from the East, Hugh's life grew with his interest in music and culture. A graduate of piano and composition from The Royal Conservatory of Music, his teachers included George Crum and Godfrey Ridout. Further studies took him to England for four years.

Returning to Canada, Hugh was a radio music producer for CBC 's English and French network. In 1966, he helped found the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec. During the next 22 years his impact on the Canadian music scene was extraordinary, specifically through his work at the and the National Arts Centre.

After his retirement from the Canada Council, Hugh moved to Vancouver, becoming a force in the cultural community. His tireless efforts for the development of the Scotia Bank Dance Centre and as a Voting Member for the Canadian Music Centre were invaluable. Hugh then relocated to Victoria, BC. Serving on the Board and as an advisor to the Victoria Symphony, he also personally commissioned several important works for them.

"While in Victoria in 2010, I heard the news that the CMC BC operating funding grant from the BC Arts Council was going to be drastically cut. The first person that I saw after I heard this news was Hugh Davidson. Hugh gave me a big hug and said "OK, my boy, what are we going to do about this nonsense?" Hugh became a sage, mentor and friend to me. He will be greatly missed," says Bob Baker, CMC BC Regional Director.

Hugh's funeral will be on August 5th at 2:00 PM, at St. John the Divine Church in Victoria.

Vancouver's Jubilate Vocal Ensemble Wins Major Award In International Competition

Information: available here

Kathaumixw (pronounced kath-OW-mew) may not be a household word in most Canadian communities, but in the world of choral singing, it's a major event.

Held in Powell River, BC, this year's International Choral Kathaumixw was especially rewarding for first- time entrant Jubilate (yoo-bee-latte) Vocal Ensemble of Vancouver, whose 38 singers under director Larry Nickel captured the Elmer Iseler Trophy for best performance of a Canadian composition.

Several award-winning choirs from around the world competed for the prize, but Jubilate's spirited version ofRoyal Hudson about the recently retired steam train from North Vancouver to Squamish - written by Dave Baker and arranged by Nickel - was deemed the top performance by the jury. "You brought this choir to Level 5," said one judge. "Awesome sound," said another. "Overall a fantastic performance! A wonderful choir."
