In a political climate as crazy as this one, the most powerful speech at the United Nations wasn't actually from a world leader, but from a K-Pop band. 이와 같은 광적인 정치 분위기에서 UN에서 가장 강력한 연설은 사실 세계 지도자의 연설이 아니라 K-Pop 밴드의 연설이었다.

“I wanna hear your voice and I wanna hear your conviction.” “난 너의 목소리를 듣고 싶어, 난 너의 확신을 듣고 싶어.”

That was Nam Jun, a member of BTS, one of the world's most popular K-Pop bands. 그것은 세계에서 가장 인기 있는 K-Pop 밴드 중 하나인 BTS의 멤버인 남준이었다.

“Gangnam Style” may seem like an overnight success, but it takes much longer for K-Pop artists to make it big. ‘강남 스타일’이 갑작스러운 성공처럼 보일 수도 있지만, K-Pop 아티스트들이 성공하는 데는 훨씬 오랜 시간이 걸린다.

Aspiring artists are usually scouted by or auditioned for management companies. 연예인 지망생들은 대개 연예기획사에 의해 스카웃되거나 연예기획사에 들어가기 위해 오디 션을 본다.

If selected, they are groomed, mentored, and intensely trained from a young age by managers or agents for years before recording their first song. 이들은 선발되면 어린 나이부터 메니저와 계획사에 의해 오랜 기간 잘 꾸며지고, 멘토링 받 고, 집중 훈련을 받은 후 첫 곡을 녹음한다.

The K-Pop industry emerged from the financial crisis in the late 1990’s when the South Korean economy tanked. K-Pop 산업은 한국 경제가 망가졌던 1990년대 후반 경제위기 때 등장했다.

To rebuild, the government didn't just focus on obvious sectors like manufacturing and tech, they invested in entertainment. (경제를) 재건하기 위해 한국 정부는 제조업이나 첨단 기술 같은 분야에만 집중한 것이 아 니라, 오락에도 투자했다.

As audiences grew, K-Pop became a major South Korean export. 관중들이 많아짐에 따라 K-Pop은 한국의 주요 수출품이 되었다.

Global sales for K-Pop related music and video grew to earn 5 billion a year. K-Pop 관련 음악과 영상물의 세계 판매는 연간 50억 달러를 벌어들일 만큼 성장했다.

And that’s when it got political. 그리고 정치적인 성격을 가지게 된 것은 이때였다.

In 2015, South Korea started blaring K-Pop music across the border, toward North Korea. 2015년 한국은 K-Pop 음악을 군사 분계선을 넘어 북한을 향해 크게 틀기 시작했다.

Campaigns altered Iyrics to popular K-Pop songs and choreographed signature dance moves. 선거운동 캠프들은 인기 있는 K-Pop 음악에 가사를 맞췄고, 주요 춤 동작을 만들었다.

South Korea's current President Moon Jae-in, for example, used "Cheer Up" by the girl band Twice as his anthem. 예를 들어, 한국의 문재인 대통령은 그의 응원곡으로 여성 밴드 트와이스의 ‘Cheer Up’을 사용했다.

In North Korea, people were literally being imprisoned for watching or listening to K-Pop but recently there's been a breakthrough. 북한 사람들은 K-Pop을 보거나 듣는다고 문자 그대로 투옥되고 있었지만, 최근 큰 변화가 있었다. Now we have Korean sensation BTS stepping up to the plate to address the UN and the world, telling people to believe their own convictions and voices. 이제 세계를 떠들썩하게 하는 한국의 BTS가 사람들에게 자기 자신의 확신과 목소리를 믿으 라고 말하면서 UN과 세계에 연설을 하려고 하고 있다.

The seven-member boy band joined UNICEF in creating the LOVE MYSELF campaign, building the belief that, 이 일곱 명으로 구성된 남성 밴드는 LOVE MYSELF 캠페인을 시작하는 데 UNICEF와 함께 하면서 이런 믿음을 심어주고 있다.
