HEAD COACH MICHAEL HOLTON: Michael Holton was appointed as head coach of the men’s basketball program in April, 2001, becoming the 19th coach in the 77-year history of the Pilot program. His 2002-03 team almost doubled the win output from the previous season, posting an 11-17 overall record, 4-10 in WCC play. No one will forget the Pilots’ 72-68 wire-to-wire win last season over WCC rival Gonzaga in front of a sell out crowd at the Kennel in Spokane, Wash. Portland led the league last season in free-throw percentage and turnover margin, and eight of the Pilot losses were by less than ten points. His latest prodigies, Casey Frandsen and Donald Wilson, were 2002-03 honorable-mention all-WCC picks. Holton’s first Pilot team (2001-02) was among the nation’s leaders in close losses, dropping 13 games by less than 10 points - including four overtime losses, and eight losses by less than five points. The 2001-02 season was highlighted by a 79-78 home win over Oregon - the school’s first win over the Ducks in more than 30 years. Portland’s 8.07 average on made 3-pointers resulted in a school record of 242 treys, a mark which also led the WCC. The Pilots also shattered the team 3-point attempts record (553, 1992-92) with 684. Before he had even coached a game, Holton’s first recruiting class was the Best in the WCC, according to Hoop Scoop Online, a national recruiting website. Holton returned to the campus where he began his Division I coaching career, having served the 1994-95 season under Rob Chavez. While at Portland in 1994-95 with Chavez, Holton helped direct the Pilots to a 21-8 record. At the time, it was the Pilots’ most successful campaign in 37 years.

PILOTS ON THE TV/RADIO: Portland has made numerous appearances on national and regional television in recent years. Portland will make at least five appearances on television this season. In conjunction with ESPN, Fox Sports Net, and Fox Sports Digital Nets, the league TV package contains a total of 20 men's and women's basketball broadcasts. The Pilots’ game at Duke on Dec. 14 is scheduled to air on Fox Sports Net. Portland’s game vs. Oregon will be televised on the Oregon Sports Network on Dec. 22. The Pilots’ game at Pepperdine will be a regionally televised game on Fox Sports West2 on Jan. 10. Portland hosts Gonzaga on Jan. 23 and the game will be shown on Fox Sports NW and Bay Area. The Pilots’ game at Gonzaga will be aired on Fox Sports NW on Feb. 18. Follow the Pilots all season long with play-by-play man Darrell Aune on the Pilot radio Network Flagship station KKAD 1550 AM. RECAPPING NEVADA: The University of Portland men’s basketball team dug deep and out-played the Nevada Wolf Pack in every aspect of the game for an 86-70 win at the Chiles Center Thursday night. Sophomore Donald Wilson went for a game-high 24 points as the Pilots rolled to a four-game winning streak. Portland improves to 4-1 overall, the best start since the 1998-99 season. The Wolf Pack falls to 2-2 on the season. The Pilots have shot the lights out recently and did the same tonight going 30-of-58 (.517) from the floor and 7-of-13 (.538) from 3- point range. Portland iced the game from the free-throw line, finishing 19-for-26 (.731) at the stripe, knocking down nine out of ten attempts late in the game. Nevada, the unanimous pick to win the Western Athletic Conference Championship, took an early 2-0 lead on a Kevinn Pinkney jumper. The Pilots took their first lead on Dustin Geddis’ 15-footer and never looked back. Eugene “Pooh” Jeter made it 23-10 at the 10:50 mark in the first half on the first of his four 3-pointers on the night. The Pilots forced 19 turnovers and gained a 25-8 advantage in points off turnovers. Portland also had the edge in second chance points (21-7) and fast break points (11-6). Portland matched the Wolf Pack on the boards at 29 apiece. “I was proud of our defensive energy,” said head coach Michael Holton. “We played phenomenal help defense, and it was constant the whole game. We were able to bring their half-court offense to a standstill.” Nevada battled back from an early first half deficit to go into the break down 35-32. Preseason WAC Player of the Year Kirk Snyder scored 10 first half points to pace the Wolf Pack, but Wilson gave Portland 12 points. Pinkney scored six straight points midway through the second half to make the score 57-52 at the 9:00 mark. After a free throw by Garry Hill-Thomas, Portland went on a 6-0 run on two Geddis jumpers and a Wilson layup. From that point on, the Pilots answered every Nevada threat with clutch shots and a well-executed offense. Adam Quick hit a trey to give Portland a 68-57 edge with under six minutes left. Jeter finished off the Pack with a lay-in and 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 1:36 remaining, putting the Pilots up 74-61. Jeter, who finished with 20 points, knocked down all four of his attempts from beyond the arc and is now 15-for-24 (.625) on the season from downtown. Geddis had another solid outing with 12 points, eight coming in the second half, to go with seven boards. Quick chipped in 12 points, going 7-for-8 from the charity stripe. Wilson went head-to head much of the night with the highly touted Snyder, and finished with a season-high 24 points, five boards, five assists and three steals. Snyder had 15 points, four rips, four assists and two blocked shots. Pinkney finished with 20 points, going 8-for-10 from the field for the Wolf Pack. Nevada shot well from the floor going 27-of-51 (.529), but made just 4-of-14 (.286) from the 3-point line. The difference was turnovers, as Portland only turned the ball over on nine occasions. “I think we got better tonight,” said Holton. “When we get the floor spaced on offense, we are really good. If we keep up the defensive intensity and make teams shoot jump shots with a hand in their face, we can win every night.”

RECAPPING NEW MEXICO: The University of Portland men’s basketball team seems to be quite comfortable on the road. The Pilots dealt New Mexico a rare loss at The Pit in Albuquerque on Mon., Dec. 1, 77-71. Senior guard Casey Frandsen lit up New Mexico for 23 points, going 6-for-8 from the three-point line. Four other Pilots scored in double-figures as Portland outscored the Lobos 48-37 in the second half to pull off the come-from-behind win. New Mexico has an all- time home record of 524-128, but the Pilots maintained their poise and gutted out the win. “The goal tonight was to have a good second half,” said Head Coach Michael Holton after the game. “The question was, would we have enough composure to stay in the game after a rough start, and we showed that ability and came away with a great performance. This is a big win for our program.” The Lobos capitalized with the home court advantage early, jumping out to a 7-0 lead highlighted by junior forward Alfred Neale’s dunk and three-pointer. Pilot senior Dustin Geddis put the crowd back in their seats with an 18-foot jumper from the free-throw line extended on the right side. New Mexico extended to a 14-4 lead behind sophomore forward David Chiotti’s seven early points, forcing the Pilots to take an early timeout at the 13:32 mark. Portland weathered the storm and battled back on the shoulders of Frandsen, who came off the bench to score 12 points, including 3- for-5 from three-point range. Frandsen ignited an 18-11 run to close out the half. Eugene “Pooh” Jeter struggled with his shot in the first half (2-for-7) but made a clutch driving layup at the halftime buzzer, making it 34-29. Neale finished the half with 12 points, going 3-of-4 from long-range. Portland struggled with a 3-for-11 start from the field, but went into the locker room at 12-for-26 (.462). New Mexico continued their hot shooting and finished 13-for-25 (.520), knocking down five treys. Chiotti paced the Lobos again in the second half after being forced to sit the last few minutes of the first period in foul trouble. Chiotti made a three-point play and also converted a jump hook in the lane to make it 47-39 at the first media timeout with 14:46 remain- ing. He would finish with 19 points on just eight shot attempts. The Pilots kept their composure and got two easy baskets to cut the lead to four. Junior Patrick Galos and Geddis were the beneficia- ries of nice assists from Frandsen, making it 47-43 with a little less than 13 minutes to play. After another Galos layup, Neale hit his fourth trey of the game to take the lead back to five, but Portland claimed their first lead of the night after back-to-back three-pointers from senior guard Adam Quick, making it 51-50 with just under 10:09 to go. Quick who did not attempt a shot in the first half, started 4-for-4 and put in 11 points through the first 10 minutes of the second period. The Pilots were able to execute as well as they have in any of the first few games, reminiscent of the road-win over Oregon State last week. Portland quieted a rowdy crowd many times late, none more important than a Frandsen trey off a Geddis hand-off with under seven minutes left. After a defensive stand, Geddis made a nice move in the paint to draw a foul, and converted both free-throws, extending the advantage to 60-54. Freshman forward Dreshawn Vance blocked Mark Walters shot, then beat the Lobos down the floor and converted a fast-break layup to push the lead to eight. Frandsen’s hip-injury was an afterthought as the senior knocked down consecutive threes making it 68-59 with less than four minutes. “I had a few open looks at the beginning that got me going,” said Frandsen. “We came into a place with great atmosphere, played tough and came away with the win.” After two Chiotti free-throws and a Tindall layup, the Pilots turned the ball over and Galos committed his fifth foul, sending Chiotti back to the stripe down five, with 1:43 remaining. The sophomore from San Jose, Calif. made one-of-two, cutting the lead to four. The Lobos stole the ball and made an uncontested layup making it a 68-66 game as the crowd erupted. Poise was key, and coach Holton called on senior Dustin Geddis to make a big shot. Geddis went hard to the hoop and made a five-footer with 48 ticks remaining. Another defensive stop and Pooh Jeter grabbed the and was instantly fouled with 37 seconds left. It was a matter of knocking down free-throws, and the Pilots took care of business, making seven of their final eight attempts to put the game away. The Pilots finished 27-for-49 from the field (.551), 10-for-20 from three-point range (.500) and 13-for-18 at the charity stripe (.722). Portland shot over 65 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Wilson had 12 points and eight rebounds, Geddis finished with 12 points and seven boards, while Quick and Jeter chipped in 10 each. The Lobos were led by Neale’s 22 points and 13 rebounds. Chiotte finished with 19 points, but only brought down one board. New Mexico was held to 38.5 percent (10-26) from the field in the second half. “It was a breakthrough game for us,” noted Holton. “Hopefully we can keep it going.”

RECAPPING LONG BEACH STATE: The University of Portland men’s basketball team led for the majority of the game and when it got close, the Pilots kept their composure to grind out a 65-59 win over the Long Beach State 49ers at the Chiles Center on Sat., Nov. 29. The Pilots opened the game on a trey by Eugene “Pooh” Jeter for a 3-0 Portland lead. The Pilots broke out for a 21-8 lead with 9:34 left to go in the first half which was sparked by a disciplined game plan played out by all five players on the floor. Long Beach State went on a 9-3 run to make it interesting and closed the gap to within seven points, but the Pilots went into the break leading 24-17. After the break, Andreas Gahlmann started the Pilot scoring with a bank shot in the paint. Donald Wilson recorded two back-to-back dunks at the 17 minute mark, he had five crams on the night. Long Beach State wouldn’t submit without a fight and chipped away at the www.portlandpilots.com MEN’S BASKETBALL NOTES Pilot lead. The 49ers took a one-point lead on a trey by Jibril Hodges, making it 33-32 LBSU. Adam Quick responded with a 12-foot jumper of his own at the 12:01 mark. Dustin Geddis battled on the boards and tipped the ball in off one of his three offensive rebounds of the night, for a 37-36 Pilot lead. Long Beach State was able to slow the tempo of the game, aiding to their style of play, but the Pilots stayed within their own system and came out top. There were four tied scores in the game and six lead changes, but close to the four minute mark, Portland began to pull ahead. After LBSU’s Hodges tied the score at 50-50 on a trey, Adam Quick answered with one of his own for a 53-50 Pilot advan- tage. Coming out of a media timeout, Holton set up the perfect momentum play for Portland. With 3:32 left in the game, Patrick Galos set a hearty pick off the left opening up daylight for another Donald Wilson cram, and a 55-52 Portland lead. Portland extended the lead to 62-57 off two free throws by Pooh Jeter. It was not the plan the LBSU coaching staff called for as they erupted off the bench when Hodges committed the foul. After two more missed chances by the 49ers, Hodges fouled Adam Quick with 24 seconds left. Quick converts both frees and opens the lead to seven. With nine seconds left, Long Beach State’s Antoine Jackson committed an intentional foul, sending Jeter to the line to seal the deal for a 65-59 win. Portland racked up 21 points off LBSU turnovers, 26 points in the paint and 13 second chance points for the game. Donald Wilson led the Pilots with 18 points on 8-12 shooting from the field. Pooh Jeter contributed 16 points, a season-best six assists and made 6-of-8 from the free-throw line tonight. Adam Quick chipped in 12 points, making 4-9 from the field. Wilson and Dustin Geddis led the team on the boards with four each. As a team, the Pilots shot 64 percent from the charity stripe (9-14), 44 percent from the three-point line (8-18) and 46 percent from the field (24-52). “I was concerned with our emotional status, considering we were coming off such a high from the Oregon State win, but we played mature, we stayed poised and we kept our composure under pressure,” said Pilot head coach Michael Holton. Hodges led the 49ers with 18 points, making 6-9 from the field, 5-7 from beyond the arc and 1-2 from the free-throw line. Antoine Jackson tallied 12 points, while Kevin Roberts added 11 points. Cody Pearson led all players with 11 boards. LBSU ended the game shooting 50 percent (23-46) from the field, 47 percent (7-15) from three-point range and 50 percent (6-12) from the free-throw line. The 49ers edged Portland on the boards, 29-24. “It was an ugly game, but we got it done,” said Holton. “We struggled to play with defensive energy near the end of the game, but we came away with some key plays down the stretch for the win.”
