YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

ST. NICHOLAS DAY T DECEMBER 6 by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP The feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated by the church on December 6. St. Nicholas was the Bishop of Myra in the fourth century and is famous for his generosity. Many tradions have developed based on incidents in his life. One tradion holds that St. Nicholas secretly gave gold to three girls who needed money to get married. The girls otherwise would have been sold into slavery. Many Chrisans sll celebrate a special holiday on December 6, which is the day St. Nicholas died. In the past, men would dress in long bishops’ robes and visit children urging them to be good and giving them small gi s. Tradionally, children placed their shoes outside their bedroom doors and on the morning of December 6 a special treat was inside. It was believed that during the night St. Nicholas visited the home and placed a gi inside the shoes. By the way, the Dutch word for St. Nicholas is Sinterklaas, from which came our word Santa Claus. Why not celebrate St. Nicholas Day with your family? Perhaps, your family could make small gi s or write notes that you will do something special and place it in each other’s shoes the night of December 5. So, in the morning, the family will receive a special gi on the Feast of St. Nicholas. Let us pray, “We humbly implore your mercy, Lord: protect us in all dangers through the prayers of the Bishop Saint Nicholas, that the way of salvaon may lie open before us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen” (2011 Roman Missal p868).

Jesus said to his disciples: "Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the me will come. It is like a man traveling abroad.
