Central come into the game as the champions of 2012, having also won the cup in 1997, 1998, 2005 and 2007 and as NRFL champions in 2004, 2007 and 2008. With three first team members having made the switch from Central last year to Birkenhead, this is likely to be a competitively fought game. Our lads were unlucky not to win last week playing away against Hamilton Wanderers. Playing on a heavy pitch and having a leveling goal scored against us in the 94th minute was a tough result, which I am sure will spur the team on, especially when considering a solitary point is what separates us from ECB in second place. We have now gone 29 games unbeaten in league matches and that is the mark of a good side which is well coached. In the wider club, the lights for our lower fields are due to start construction any day now with our permanent fence being reinstated in the next two weeks while plans are also progressing for our last field and our training pitch to be rebuilt in October. A warm thank to the life members of the club. In this our special 50th anniversary year, their participation, guidance and generosity is more valuable than ever and I join my fellow committee members in celebrating everything they have done for the club over many (in some cases many, many, many) years. Please feel free to join me in the clubrooms for a chat, a bite to eat and something to wash it down with. Regards, Dave Newick President - BUAFC

www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 3 FIRST TEAM REPORT A warm welcome to the Central squad, officials and all supporters today. We are expecting today’s game to be our toughest of the season now the O league has finished. Our last home game was a 2-1win against with goals to Lawso and Sam Margetts. We rode our luck and to be honest didn’t play very well but we should have put the game away in the second half. Bay Olympic played some nice football and were well in the game until their send off. Then to Hamilton last weekend. Disappointing to only draw after taking the lead in injury time, and it was a tough game on a very poor pitch. Goals went to Jack and Dylan. Thanks to Parky, Time, Hannah, Steve, Terry and Jason for all their help. Cheers Hobbo

FIRST TEAM REPORT – MANAGERS SAY! A big welcome from the “Home of Football” to Chris Zoricich and his players, staff and supporters. Also to our officials for the day Chris Kerr and his assistants. It’s been a few seasons since the last fixture between these two sides with only from memory, Sam Jasper and Stuart Hogg in our ranks this year from that last encounter at Kiwitea Street, while Hago has the shoe on the other foot for this round! Let’s hope the heavens are kind to us for the sake of football.

Vs Bay Olympic 11-05-2013 A game that was physically challenging for both teams, yet the ‘mature’ Bay Olympic team held the balance of power with the assistance of the chime of the whistle. This was well supported due to ‘blanket cancellations’ Super City wide! Birko created chances during the first stanza, yet only went to the break 1-0 to the better, on a day football could be promoted. The only negative being that the 9th minute strike by James Lawson to take the lead also saw him need to leave the field due to his fearless effort to convert his change. 1-0 up at the break, yet still work to be done. ‘Fletch’ saved a penalty … superb! Yet Bay Olympic soon equalised! A 75th minute strike by Sam ‘Magwheels’ Margetts to open his account this season saw us home for the 3 points. An invigorating display at the back by Jacob ‘Jake the Muss’ Hall, with a chip and chase that Frano Botica would be proud of, was outstanding and was player of the day as a result.

4 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz On the road again vs. Hamilton Wanderers 18-05-2013 An early breakfast and coach trip to the Waikato to face the Mark Cossey coached Hamilton Wanderers, and the lads seemed upbeat! Having Jack, Doobie, Jasper and Mags part of Cossey’s Waikato FC squad ensured both teams were aware of each other. The Porritt Stadium turf resembled more a ‘sticky pudding’ than a playing surface for which an apology was made post match. For 20 minutes while the surface held up, Birko were clinical and a 9th minute strike by Dylan Windust saw us up, only to be dragged back by the half, with the hosts down to 10 men, yet 1-1 at the break. The hosts “bottled up” in the second spell and when Jack Hobson-McVeigh scored in the “refs time,” celebrations! Only to be subdued by a second equaliser moments later, go figure, still 1 point away from home! A very quiet coach trip home. Player of the day with 150% effort to Ryan Howlett who when not playing or training, swims with the sharks, crazy! Great to see our loyal boys and girls travel down to the Netherworld. The lads, staff and all involved appreciate it no end! Enjoy today and get involved and thanks to Tim, Hannah and of course Paul Hobson … Legend! The NaughtyStep See you after the game Cheers Parky

8 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz BIRKO RESSIES Hamilton Wanderers v Birkenhead Reserves Porritt Stadium 18/05/2013 This fixture is the only time this season barring a cup run that the team have a bit of a road trip. Given the previous weeks narrow win the team knew that not only did we need to lift our game, but we needed to do it against the team leading the reserve competition. Arriving and warming up in the rain seems to be a regular thing this season, the difference in Hamilton was that their pitches turn to bogs when wet and so playing attractive football would prove difficult; the first five minutes proved that. We tried to get our passing game going only to be punished by the big ol’ boot down the field to a very quick forward. He managed to create enough pressure to get a shot off which took a deflection off Ash to put Gareth the wrong way. Two minutes later following a similar move Hamilton struck again and once again Ash’s knee helped the ball over the line. 2-0 down in less than 5 minutes! Our bodies may have been on the park but our heads were still on the bus. Eventually we worked our way into the game and adapted to the slippery conditions and started dominating the possession. After a couple of good opportunities including a good save from Elijah we struck back through Harrison Bolton-Roberts. Elijah had twisted and turned his way around several players and played the ball to Nathan whose shot rebounded to Harrison outside the box and his trademark drive left the keeper without a chance. Our joy was short-lived. Following a free kick late in the half, Gareth was left with no chance as the ball found the inside of the post to make it 3-1. Despite the score-line the boys headed back out for the second half with the firm belief that there was something to be had from the game (otherwise it was going to be a sad bus trip home). But as the game neared full-time and all of our possession had come to nought, it looked like things would remain the same. Hamilton had sensed that they were on the back foot and had resorted to winding the clock down, whilst our boys continued to dig in deep. When the subs came on the fresh legs added to the mix and the tempo was raised. With only a few minutes to go a move that began with Drew at left back and seemed to involve most players was smashed home by Connor. Pride at least had been restored and the icing was on the cake when Elijah played a ball across the face of the goal in the 90th minute. Nathan appeared out of nowhere to slot home from 3 metres out - a real goal poachers finish! The ref played on for a further four minutes because of the time wasting and Elijah had another chance to snatch victory, but for an excellent save. In the end the final whistle couldn’t come quick enough for Hamilton and our boys learned that if you keep battling you will be rewarded! Solid performances from Gareth in goal, Harry and Tom in midfield, Roddy and Elijah, who was named man of the match. Terry Taylor

www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 9 UNDER 17 METRO The prospect of being selected for the team every week just got more difficult for Birkenhead’s top young talent. With the squad totaling 23, it has become increasingly difficult to choose a well balanced team to represent Birkenhead United in the elite Metropolitan League. Most would agree Birkenhead’s u17 Metro selectors will have a challenging/stressful period selecting a winning combination every week. Only 14 Players are selected every week for each game.

A treble by returning striker secures another emphatic win Game 5 vs Bucklands Beach, Sunday 12 May, Rogers Park: The brief to the boys this week was a simple one: “Bucklands Beach was Dylan Higgins previous team and we want to teach them a lesson”. And with the return of Conor Felstead to the strike force, we were once again set for another impressive showing. The game leapt off to a flying start with us keeping possession and commanding control. The boys maintained a constant pace by passing the ball all around the park but our attacking play, with the final pass, was the let down this time. The likelihood of scoring never really presented itself as our strikers hardly had the opportunity to shoot at goal. A well placed free-kick by Adyn Kettle left the opposition defense motionless and the follow up strike by Conor Felstead just missed pass the upright. Conor eventually scored after a delivery by the midfield into the box. Scrappy, but effective 1-0 up and we felt we had broken the seal. Within minutes an effective attacking play down the right flank allowed a cross-in from the bi-line for Thomson Nkoy to finish, falling over as he shot for goal. Similar to the goal scored by Lawso in the 1st team’s game the day before…..mmmmm, too many similarities with that play it may be the coach is trying something new. Our dominance in the mid-field exemplified our superior “on the ball” skills. A strong showing by Adyn Kettle, Jack Benbow and especially Amili Kasim, showed off the opposition’s mediocre performance. Bucklands Beach’s game is based on swift counterattack and our defense (also worth mentioning) led by Scott Guyatt, presented very little chances for the opposition to attack. Shortly after the start of the second half, Conor Felstead scored quickly in succession, 4-0 up. To be honest, I cannot recall the exact plays and therefore cannot report on both situations….it happened so fast. But I do however, clearly recall Amili’s goal. With so much

10 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz possession in the mid-field, Amili found himself with enough time to contemplate a “Shot on Goal” approximately. 20 metres out from the goal mouth. With a powerful right foot strike the ball floated through the defense and for a moment it seemed as if the keeper had it covered but no…. BAM through the legs…..unlucky, 5-0 up. Our 6th came courtesy of a Scott Guyatt break away down the left flank and an intended cross into the danger area resulted in the ball floating over the keeper, just under the crossbar and into the back of the net. He made it look easy….let’s see you do that again Scott. Conclusion: Home advantage was not enough to get Bucklands Beach even close to our standard of superior football and I am sure they’ve learnt a valuable lesson how to play proper football. Stand outs: Amili Kasim, Conor Felstead, Scott Guyatt and Darius Shazell Result: 6-0 win Coaching Team’s Emotion: Yippeeeee Outlook: Table toppers next….??? Birko’s young guns move closer to topping the ladder Game 6 vs Ellerslie, Sunday 19 May, Shepherds Park: In my opinion the very essence of coaching is having a commanding sense of leadership. At the heart of leadership you will find vision. And it’s got to be a vision you express clearly and forcefully every time. I got to witness an example of Paul Hobson’s vision first hand this past weekend. With so many talented players to choose from for the game against the unbeaten Ellerslie, Paul opted to select a team which was stacked with forwards. And it paid off big time!!! Frive games played and Ellerslie only conceded two goals. Which meant their defense was hard to penetrate. But our young guns easily exposed their defense and more than doubled their ‘Goals Against’ statistic. I am sure our loyal supporters have grown accustomed to the way we dominate from the outset, and the start of this game was no different. Within minutes Ellerslie quickly identified that our lethal strike-force would direct play and assembled most of their players at their goal mouth. It would take a stroke of inventive football to crack that defensive nut, and the defensive nut eventually cracked courtesy of an Adyn Kettle goal. A free kick just outside the box allowed a leaping Elijah to header the ball down at Adyn’s feet which he calmly slotted past the keeper with a touch of finesse, bottom right. 1-0 up and we were plain sailing to the end of the first half. But once again when we seem to dominate, a lapse in concentration (a teenager’s daily default) showed off Ellerslie’s counter attack playing style. Our boys just handed the ball to the opposition with that “final pass” not being executed successfully. A play down the right hand side produced a corner which was not cleared and www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 11 UNDER 17 METRO continued a shot at goal resulted in a handball in the box – penalty….aaaaarrrrgghh! With the probability of an equaliser just before the end of the 1st half it was now Darius’ turn to shine. He told me (after the game) he stared down the penalty taker and noticed at the last second he glanced bottom left upright. Good presumption as the correct deduction resulted in an awesome save – impressive goal keeping. The start to the second half was an even state of affairs. Ellerslie seem to identify that they would need to push players up the field and attack if they were to contest this game. Some high quality football from both sides provided our spectators with some entertainment. Strong performances from the ever consistent Scott and the rest of the defense, Jarrod, Jack, Amili and Harry Bell rarely allowed Ellerslie to shoot at goal. A classy run down the left flank by Dylan Higgins (back from injury) to the bi-line assisted in Elijah’s goal. Dylan somehow had enough time to decide to either cross over the face of goal or lay it back to an approaching Elijah. Dylan chose the latter by “threading the needle“ between two defenders and after a deft touch and with pinpoint accuracy, Elijah curved the ball around the keeper, 2-0 and the result seemed as if it was a foregone conclusion. But another corner kick caused a little panic inside the box and WHAM a goal to the opposition.

12 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 2-1 up and game on again. SEASON GOALS In my last article I challenged Scott by Conor Felstead 3 mentioning “let us see you do that again”. In hindsight I should’ve set the challenge to Thomson Nkoy 3 Amili. Because, believe it or not, his goal was Adyn Kettle 2 a virtual carboncopy of the goal he scored Amili Kasim 2 last week. A ‘Shot on Goal’ approximately. 23 metres out from the goal mouth resulted Elijah Neblett 2 in a misjudgment by the keeper and BAM, Dylan Higgins 1 goal 3-1….let us see you do that again Amili. Harrison Bolton-Roberts 1 Polished performances by Harri Bolton- Joel Curran 1 Roberts, Elijah Neblett and Thomson Nkoy alleviated pressure which allowed our John Short 1 team to dominate completely. Keegan Farrelly 1 For me it was Hobbo’s pure vision that lead Scot Guyatt 1 the team to another overwhelming victory. Tate Kimpton 1 To quote a spectator after the game: “That’s the type football we are used to watching TOTAL 19 at Birkenhead United - just bloody brilliant”. Conclusion: “The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it” - Theodore Roosevelt. Stand outs: Darius Shazell, Scott Guyatt, Elijah Neblett, Thomson Nkoy and Jarred Dixon Result: 3-1 win Coaching Team’s Emotion: Jubilant Outlook: Possible league winners Coach: Paul Hobson Trainers: Steve Holbutt & Terry Taylor Manager: Jason Higgins

www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 13 LADIES FOOTBALL 2013

1ST DIVISION 12th May 2013 – vs. East Coast Bays: Result 2 - 3 Loss What was down as a top of the table clash turned into a game full of clichés… 1. “It was a game of two halves” 2. “You have to play the full ninety” 3. “Nothing comes easy in this league” The game started with the Birko Ladies receiving a lesson in quick ball movement, and fast attacking play from a youthful looking Bays side, putting Birko on the back foot, chasing their tails, for what seemed like the entire first half. Luckily for Birkenhead, and closely associated to Caroline Anderson’s intelligent sweeping role, Bays were only able to grab one goal, which came on the end of an untidy goal mouth scramble, from their dominating first half performance. After a tactful word or two at the break the second half was a complete contrast to the first, Birko took the dominating role, and Bays were put on their back foot, and it wasn’t long until Fiona Pierce calmly slotted one into the lower left hand corner. Another superb performance from Lorna Selby, who has made the step up from under 15’s this year, and contributions from Gill Lathwood (who may vaguely remember being 15), ensured the pressure continued.

14 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz With twenty to go Birko went 2-1 up after Lisa Witberg netted an absolute screaming twenty yard volley that any player would have been proud off, things were looking promising, unfortunately now time to introduce cliché number 2. With ten to go the Bays striker pinched the ball from the Birko defence and levelled the scores from a one on one opportunity. With a sniff of victory Bays swung the dominance back in their direction sending Birkenhead into survival mode, which they almost made. Come the second minute of extra time a twenty five yard shot bounced off the Birko crossbar and up into the keepers hands, seemingly freezing everyone in time, everyone except the Bays lineman who was furiously flagging the ref indicating a goal. After a quick consultation between linesman and ref the goal was awarded, (he must have had good eye sight from ten yards up the line), thirty seconds later the full time whistle blew, aaaggghhh….. A man of the match performance from Melia Rosen, who started off at right half and ended up as right back, and plenty of good things to take from the days outing, however cliché number 3, if we want to be at the top of the table come the end of the season, we must ensure we get something out of games like these as opposition teams are all competitive enough to steal your thunder if you give them the chance. FIFA WOULD BE PROUD

19th May 2013 – vs. Te Atatu: Result 0 - 1 Loss This was a game that was aptly described at the half-time break by the team captain, Yvette Amadia, as “an arm wrestle that could go either way”; unfortunately we weren’t the ones who came out on top at the end of the ninety! Being moved off the number 1 field, and forced up to the number 4 was in itself disappointing for the team, (and hopefully not reoccurring), but it also brought with it a strong cross wind which could be described as influential. With two very differing styles of play, Birkenhead – fast ball movement to feet, retain the ball, switch the play, Te Atatu – pack defend, obtain the ball, coach yells “Go long, go long”, kick it as hard as you can up the field, chase it, there are possible positives you could take from both methods. The strong ‘pack’ defensive tactics of Te Atatu kept them in the running throughout the game, with Birko having numerous goal box scrambles they just couldn’t seem to get through. www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 15 LADIES FOOTBALL 2013 After approximately 65 minutes of their ‘kick it long’ tactics Te Atatu put one high and heading towards the goal, on landing the ball took up a vicious spin cruelly heading through the keepers hands and into the net. From that point Birko increased the pressure creating several further goal scoring opportunities, but to no avail. Another strong game from Lorna Selby, exploiting the opposition down the left hand side, and a player of the day performance from Lisa Witberg, controlling the back line and tidying up the copious long balls from Te Atatu, shows plenty of strength from the teams younger players, providing plenty of promise for the team in years to come – as long as they are provided the opportunities. Next week we start the leagues second round and head out to West Auckland where the team must keep their heads up, remain positive about their style of play, and learn from the last couple of weeks.

2ND DIVISION 12th May – 2-1 loss vs. Norwest This week saw us travel to current league leaders Norwest for what was always going to be a tough game. In an attempt to stop the results slump we had found ourselves in recently it was time to try a new formation. Giving a team a new formation half-way through the season is never easy and we knew there’d be teething problems but the girls took to it well. The game was a well contested one in which we saw plenty of the ball and had plenty of chances to snatch all the points but we frustratingly couldn’t convert any and an early defensive mistake ultimately cost us. Despite this we scored a very well taken goal through Patrice Koks and Karen Taylor showed her experience to produce a man of the match performance in the heart of our defence. So although feeling like we’d tossed the points away, the general performance of the team was good and the potential looks promising for the rest of the year.

19th May – 6-1 Win vs. West Auckland This week we hosted West Auckland at home and without knowing anything about them we decided to stick with our new formation and see what happens. What happened was magic. The girls put on the best performance I’ve ever seen them play and we ran out easy winners in the end. Six goals with five different goal scorers tells its own story but the general play all across the field was brilliant and could have easily produced more goals if the opposition keeper hadn’t been having a good day. From our defensive line being solid and error free to our midfield dominating and our strikers having a field-day, the overall performance was a 9/10. Whilst I could have picked anyone for player of the day the major stand-out was our centre back Claire Kearney for an all-round brilliant performance topped off with a sublime 25 yard free kick into the top left which left the keeper rooted to the spot. I expect this result to be a huge lift to the team’s morale after a difficult few weeks and hopefully we can push on and start making up for lost ground in the league.

16 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 3RD DIVISION In the last two games we went from playing the team at the bottom of the table to the team at top. The first of the two was away to Glen Eden, a ridiculously easy game with an 8 nil win which could have easily been higher. In saying that the girls didn’t let the score go to their head and they carried on playing proper football. The spread of goal scorers across the card was an encouraging sign. To name a few: Central midfield player Trish Coleman got on the card three times, Laura Tattersall who constantly looked dangerous inside the box was unlucky not to get more than two and Juliet Todd got her first goal of the season with a cheeky little tap in. On the other side of the coin is Waitemata, who are top of the table by winning all their games, we knew it would be a hard match. We had a promising start in the first 15 minutes where the ball barely left their half. Then Waitematä got their first goal which then became five by the end of the half. The team came out in the second half with a positive attitude and worked hard for each other even creating a couple of chances. Thanks to Jodi Ruakere’s energetic and gutsy goalkeeping the game stayed at five nil. From a coach’s point of view there is definitely a lot of positives we can take away from the last two weeks of football and we can move toward Oratia Social with a great deal of confidence.

(Yep, we have been there before!) A total of 67 games werre played with kick off at 8.30am on Saturday 24th September and were played through until the Sunday Finals at 3.30pm. The weekend proved to be a great success with not only brilliant football, but a great party atmosphere ... who knew those girls from Palmy could drink that much! The standout for the weekend though, was the amount of volunteers that put their time and effort in to making it a really great weekend .... it just goes to show that “we” as a club were and still are, a force to be reckoned with! www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 25 JUNORS FOOTBALL 2013 Fun Football Development Squad Trials On Sunday we had 78 of our best kids from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades brave the elements to trial for our development squads. These squads train one night a week with Paul Hobson and attend inter-club tournaments. A big thanks to our selection panel of Paul Hobson, Jack Hobson-McVeigh, Sam Margetts and James Lawson. The 2013 development teams are: 6TH GRADE 7TH GRADE 8TH GRADE Liam Beale Leo Grant Jack Gillum Musso Tuiloma Braeden Gibb Noah Blandford Ethan Bates Sam McQuay Tyler Hughes Ryan Ede James Taylor Noah Henderson Joel Blijevens Jackson Walsh Lucas Lohner-McBride Tyler Van Zyl Luka Lagenbach Joseph Marshall Damien Melrose Dominic Hawkins Lachlan Simmons James Marshall Alfie Bell McLean Barclay Aaron Sievert Oscar Bentley Sam Lathwood Logan Harkness Oliver Watson Javier Norton Jasper Watson Oscar Neville Jarred D’Sousa Ethan Gatchell Jacob Stanley Josh Batty Jack Londeen Vojin Tamihana-Rilak Travis Dylan Grant

A BIG congratulations to those that made the team, training starts next week: - 8th Grade – Tuesday 4.15pm - 6th Grade – Wednesday 4.15pm - 7th Grade – Thursday 4.15pm

Invasion of the first team pitch Deciding whether to cancel football for 270 kids in Saturday morning is a real challenge. At 6.30am last Saturday the brains trust of the club met in what seemed fairly torrential rain. By 7.30am, the rain started to ease and with a crazy bald headed character

26 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz from Burnley yelled out “Bugger this, let’s get on with it and play!” With field 3 and the training pitch flooded, we had no option but to invade the first team pitch, so as that crazy man from Burnley boarded a bus for Hamilton, on we went. The kids thought they were in football heaven, playing on the hallowed turf of Shepherds Park. By 8am, we were dragging the last of the goals out of the shed in bright sunshine. We could not have asked for a nicer morning to play footy. “Hallelujah” the football God’s were on our side! Ben McQuay Fun Football Coordinator

9th Grade Blue Belles The Blue Belles have faced difficult opposition in the last few weeks with one win and three losses. Throughout the girls have kept their heads up and continued to work hard in every game. Anne

9th Grade Blue Buttons The Blue Buttons must be the only team in NFF to have lost two players with broken arms this early in the season. Both Georgia and Emma have been in the wars (outside of Birkenhead United) in the past few weeks. Despite these setbacks the BB’s have made huge progress as a team and are playing with a much improved formation and structure. This is making it difficult for bigger and more experienced opposition teams to score against us. The team now has a couple of wins under its belt and is really only conceding goals due to player fatigue. The girls are a tight knit group who are hugely supportive of each other. Get well soon Georgia! Mike

10th Grade Blue Birds The Blue Birds have been doing well over the last few weekends with 2 wins away at Hibiscus Coast and a win and a draw at home to Warkworth scoring 13 goals and conceding 2. www.birkenheadunited.org.nz 27 JUNORS FOOTBALL 2013 This ends the grading round for us with 7 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses scoring 34 goals and conceding 5. The team is progressing really well and if we can cut out some of the lapses in concentration and take a few more of our chances we will do well against some tougher opposition in the next round of competition. Well done girls and keep up the good work. Darryl & Dave

11 BENGALS GO MAD ON WAIHEKE (and quite a few parents) Mid-way through the grading games of the season, whoa hang on, we are heading off overseas to Waiheke. After confusing us that we needed a passport. We gear up for our trip away. Jacket ‘check’ why it’s a beautiful morning? Boots (eww a bit dirty) ‘check’, Money for the ferry ‘check’, change of clothes nah I’m 13 I don’t need a change of clothes, you can’t tell me what to do.. 10am ferry all aboard - we hope! Quick up to the top deck, time to catch us some wind and to send our hair back into the 1980’s! Arrive on Waiheke our hair is all boofed up and looking sensational, and it’s .... raining, straight hair again! A quick scramble in a variety of transport thankfully it’s not horse and cart, and we arrive to a very busy Onetangi Sports field. Quick change into blue strip, 10 mins of Lee Green and Stu Swanson making us run, pass, jump, dodge, drink water, run, pass, jump, dodge, phew we are knackered and the game hasn’t started.. Apparently if we lose we have to run up the fire break. Best we play well and win. Kickoff, 30 seconds later Talisha GOALLLL, kickoff, 30 sec’s later Madison GOOOAAL, jeez this is easy and lucky for us, it’s the Bengals slotting the ball into the back of the net. Kick off again, from full back George dribbles, jinks, jumps, runs, passes, screams to get the ball back and smashes it left foot into goal. Mums and Dads are grinning! We are on fire! After a gruelling 27.5 minutes, for Waiheke, we are up 8-0, thanks to Madison, Cynthia, Dariah and George. Second half-time to mix up the team, backs to the front, and strikers at the back. The pressure is on Payge as Stu cheers his daughter on to get that elusive goal. Second half kick-off 30 seconds later Millie GOOAAL! The second half is a repeat of the first with shot after shot from Lucy sailing wide, over the top anywhere but in the goal. Mum and supporters are on the knife-edge, please just one go in the back of the net! Lee murmurs, “shots at goal” training coming at training. Rhiarne steps up to goal, Sophie Campbell has an open goal in front of her, and passes, and that is why she is the goalie. It is pouring down; Elle now sitting on the ground in goal tries to make tent for protection from her shirt. 10 seconds to go we have a corner, can we score again and most importantly can Payge get one? Dariah swings the ball in it bobbles, it bounces, it lands on Sophie, bounces onto Payge, Stu yells get it in the ... GOAALLLLL for Payge! 12 -0. What a day, Waiheke are gracious in defeat, what a neat bunch of girls! I’m wet and it’s

28 www.birkenheadunited.org.nz cold where is my change of clothes? Oh still on the floor of my bedroom, oops! It’s now a mad dash back to the ferry and Auckland, hot chocolates, lollies, pies everything a budding sports star needs! YUM! Oops who missing, I think we left someone behind?! That has been the season so far with Bengals Red top of the table and comfortably winning their grading pool. Me thinks the second half of the season won’t be so easy as they look to step up to division 1. Mark Campbell

15th Grade Girls The Blues 15th Grade Girls team at Birkenhead football club are well into their grading round and managed their first win of the season on Saturday in an exciting 3/2 match against Fencibles. The girls have found it tough in Division 1 of a grade featuring some very strong teams and have been well beaten in the first four games of the season but have trained very hard and are now starting to play at the level demanded. Darren, the coach, started the trainings in February and has been having very good turn outs and in his words ‘they are the nicest bunch of girls to work with’ and you can see things are starting to gel in the team. We are all looking forward to the rest of the season as the girls bring a real enthusiasim to their training and playing and Darren has got them playing some attractive football.
