Verbum Dei High School The Jesuit Work Study College Prep in Annual Report 2014-2015

“You are Verbum Dei” A Word from our President

I recently finished the book Boys in the Boat by David J. Brown. The publisher’s summary of the book states, “Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.”

The story of these boys and their boat and their coaches reminded me much of our life at Verbum Dei High. “Grit” is exactly the characteristic that the school seeks to elicit from our students. The young men of the Verb are similar to the working-class boys from the boat. They are fine young men who often face extraordinary challenges at much too young of an age. Verbum Dei gives them the tools to succeed in life if they take advantage of the opportunity that they have been given.

“Keep your mind in the boat”; the coxswain would remind his crew as they race down the course. Do not worry about the other boats or anything else. Stay focused on what you are doing and pull together for victory. Each young man at the Verb has to pull his own weight, but the brotherhood that is formed over the four years allows each person to be supported, appreciated and Rev. Michael J. Mandala, S. J. encouraged to succeed. President Under the leadership of Advisory Board of Directors, the faculty and staff have dedicated themselves to the education of the Verb students. They too work together with grit and resilience to support and challenge the students to succeed not only in high school but also in college and in life. God has blessed Verbum Dei with an outstand group of men and women – faculty and staff – that are focused on helping our students reach their full potential as young men who are academically prepared, spiritual, men for others, loving, just and work ready.

Success would not be possible without the outstanding network of the generous benefactors and corporate partners that allow Verbum Dei to function as a Jesuit, College Preparatory School in Watts. Miracles happen on our campus that would not happen if it were not for the support of all those that have chosen to partner with the Verb. We are eternally grateful.

As we stroke together through the 2015-16 school year, let us remember that alone we can accomplish only so much, but together we can change the world.

May God bless you and all the families of the community of Verbum Dei High School.

Rev. Michael J. Mandala, S. J. President
