Please enjoy the pages that follow, as well as the electronic version of WFAM 2008, which is accessible on Lewis ONTENTS Third Place: The Depiction of the Jews . OF BLE Winners of the contest were selected from three genres (musical composition, visual art and writing), with numerous A T subcategories for visual art and writing. For the visual art genre, the judging was updated this year to reflect current practices in | Honorary Entries by Judges art competitions. Typically, there is only one First Place winner or “Best in Show” in an art contest, along with one Second Place and one Third Place winner. Thus, all of the subcategories are judged together. For example, photography is in competition with painting and drawing, etc. By adopting that same practice, WFAM 2008 has one First Place, one Second Place, and one Third Prof. Timothy R. Bowlby Two Limericks poetry 63 Place winner along with numerous Honorable Mention awards. Instructor Leslie Colonna of the Art Department is confident Archer’s Motto poetry 63 that this is the best practice for evaluating the contest’s art entries. Silent Remains poetry 63 Inst. Sharon Houk Te´llez Mayflies poetry 64 The musical composition and writing winners were awarded prizes based upon the possibility of First, Second, Third Place and Honorable Mention. Most importantly, the judges for music, visual art and writing had discretion to eliminate an award if they selected to do so. Many thanks to the judges in all the genres whose keen eyes, expertise and devotion to WFAM 2008 made the production of the magazine such a success! A special thanks to the President of Lewis University, Br. James Gaffney, FSC, and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Angela Durante. It is because of them that Lewis University continues to recognize and honor the creative talents and visions of those within the Lewis community. Without their support, a magazine that displays diversity, contemporary thinking and technology, association within the community and among the genres, and the sharing of knowledge and talents would not be a part of Lewis.     "THE IDEA OF BEAUTY IN THEIR PERSONS:" DANDYISM AND THE HAUNTING OF CONTEMPORARY MASCULINITY Darin Kerr A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2015 Committee: Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Juan Bes Graduate Faculty Representative Cynthia Baron Lesa Lockford © 2015 Darin Kerr All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jonathan Chambers, Advisor In this dissertation, I argue for the dandy as a spectral force haunting contemporary masculinity. Using the framework of Derridean hauntology, I posit that certain contemporary performances of masculinity engage with discourses of dandyism, and that such performances open up a space for the potential expression of a masculine identity founded on an alterity to hegemonic gender norms. The basis for this alterity derives from the philosophical underpinnings of dandyism as articulated by its most prominent nineteenth century theorizers. As a result, I divide my study into two halves: the first focuses on a close reading of texts by Balzac, d’Aurevilly, and Baudelaire; the second centers on three case studies illustrating the spectral nature of dandiacal performance in relationship to contemporary masculinity. Chapter One establishes the framework for my argument, articulating the way in which both nineteenth century French philosophical dandyism and Derrida’s concept of hauntology, particularly his “three things of the thing” (mourning, language, and work), serves to structure the rest of the study. Chapters, Two, Three, and Four, which constitute Part I, provide close readings of texts by Balzac, d’Aurevilly, and Baudelaire, respectively. Chapters Five, Six, and Seven form Part II, and consist of individual case studies examining the spectral traces of dandyism in performances of masculinity by three contemporary celebrities.

The work interrogates milestone confrontations during the civil rights movement, such as the Little Rock Nine Crisis, the African Anticolonial Movement, and the pivotal 1963 direct action campaigns waged by Martin Luther King, Jr. and the SCLC, the NAACP and SNCC. The aim of this method of historical inquiry is to determine why and how these events motivated the profiled musicians and writers to use their gifts to express opinions on the racial tumult of the era.
