LA SALLE COLLEGE in the City of

Inauguration of Daniel William Burke, F.S.C twenty-fifth President of the College at the Fall Convocation

Sunday, the nineteenth of October nineteen hundred and sixty-nine College Union Theatre PORTRAIT OF A PRESIDENT La Salle may owe its 25th president to an anonymous babysitter who failed to recognize “Yankee Doodle Dandy” in the industrious violin scraping of a boy born in Pittsburgh on October 25, 1926. Crushed by this critical reaction, the young Daniel Burke decided against a career in music, though he never lost his love for it. A similar reaction to his efforts as a grade school artist led to an abrupt end of his dreams of being a painter, though again the love of fine art remained an important part of his character. Politics and social concern came into his life quite early also. His father was a city official in Pittsburgh, and his memories of childhood include his first contacts with the poor and the needy, both black and white, who were welcomed at the dinner table while his father listened and tried to help with the problems of those suf fering the worst effects of the Depression. Touched though he was by the compassion of his father and the opportunity for dedication offered by a life of public service, Daniel Burke did not follow that path. As a freshman at Central Catholic, he decided upon a life of service as a Christian Brother, and he entered the junior novitiate in Ammendale, Md., in 1941. Here the influence of others continued to shape him. His Direc tor was Brother Gervald Henry, that urbane and witty raconteur whose genius made literature come alive in his sonorous voice. It is not surprising that the young brother, now known as Brother Fidelian, chose to major in English at Catholic University, somewhat to the disappointment of some of his other teachers. A brother who taught him science remembers, “He was one of the few young men I have taught who could quite easily have been as exceptional in science as in the humanities.” One of the shaping influences during his undergraduate years was his Director at De La Salle College at Catholic University, Brother Charles Henry, now Superior General of the order. Another was Father William Rooney, noted theoretician on Christian Humanism, who added the ingredients for a lifelong interest in the problems of the religious dimension of education to the young scholar’s concerns. Brother was graduated Magna Cum Laude from Catholic University in 1949 and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He began his teaching career at West Catholic by teaching freshman algebra, thus demonstrating either his versatility or the desperate need for mathematics teachers at 49th and Chestnut in 1949. He continued advanced study in English, however, at the University of . He returned to Catholic University in 1951, continuing to teach part-time at La Salle Hall in Ammendale and then at De La Salle College in Washington. Inspired by the work of Professor J. Craig La Driere, Brother Fidelian became a serious student of literary criticism and a leading proponent of the method called structural analysis. Having completed his Ph.D., Brother Fidelian came to La Salle as an assistant professor in 1957. His course in literary criticism quickly won a reputation among English majors for its depth and freshness of approach. Out of this new approach Brother began a scholarly text, as yet unfinished, but familiar to hun dreds of students as “The Notes.” The actual title is Notes and Readings in Structural Analysis; when the author is satisfied with the many revisions made over a dozen years, the work will be submitted for publication. It is not difficult to find former students of Brother Burke’s literary criticism course who firmly believe “The Notes” will be an important contribution to the teaching of critical theory. Some of Brother Burke’s theoretical approach is evident in the article on “Versification” which he wrote for the Encyclopedia Americana. When the College administration was re-organized by Brother Daniel Bernian in 1960, Brother Fidelian became La Salle’s first Vice-President for Academic Affairs. In nine eventful years in that office, he played a vital part in virtually every decision affecting the College. He guided the College through a monumental Self-Study and a highly successful Middle States Evaluation. He gave new life and power to faculty committees, stimulated a revamping of the curriculum, established an Honors Program and the Concert and Lecture Series, and began a study collection of fine paintings. He instituted the Faculty Workshops which, in turn, engendered the Faculty Senate. He helped insti tute a policy of research leaves for the faculty, and tried to lessen the communication problem by publishing the La Salle College Handbook, A Manual of Policies and Procedures. Under his administration of academic affairs, La Salle witnessed a slow but satisfying growth in the number of students attending graduate school and the number winning fellowships and scholarships, including prestige awards like Wilson, Danforth, and Fulbright fellowships. Incredibly, he also found time to publish verse, criticism, and articles on education during the same period. In 1967, Brother Fidelian moved with the practice of the changing Church and his Order to resume the use of his family name. But whether he was known as Brother Fidelian or Brother Burke, the style was unchanged: low-key, tentative yet determined, quietly humorous and solidly dedicated to La Salle College. He has accomplished spectacular change in a most un-spectacular manner. This is his style. This is what he brings to the Presidency of La Salle. In the greatly increased pressures and problems of his new office, he will need all the qualities he has so far demonstrated and more: vision, patience, toughness, resiliency, political skill, sensitivity—the list could be endless. Perhaps no man can fully meet the ideal. But in an age of revolution, when change is rapid and all values are questioned, the college President must be a man who can be open to change, yet secure in his basic values. Brother Daniel Burke appears to be such a man. In a phrase of Salinger’s that he himself much admires, he might even be described as “breathtakingly levelheaded.”
