4 5 COLOURFUL RESEARCH

Do we trust what we see on the Internet? Associate Professor Sophie Stalla-Bourdillon is part of a major European Union project, which is examining questions of online trust and trustworthiness. She is exploring how the law can contribute to increasing trust among users of the Internet and, generally, what drives this trust. The three year EU Framework Seven project Operational Trustworthiness Enabling Technologies (OPTET) has partners in France, Germany, Belgium and Greece. It is examining cyber security of critical infrastructure, and issues surrounding an electronic monitoring initiative involving elderly and disabled people in Norway. “Our aim is to better understand what is required to create trust online and make sure Internet users can make the most of new technologies without fear of having their basic rights and freedoms violated.”
