Submitted by THE ELLING HOUSE ARTS AND HUMANITIES CENTER

The Elling House Arts and Humanities Center is sponsoring “en plein air” reception for four Montana Artists on Friday July 26, 2019. The artists exhibiting are Ray Campo, Cindy Owings, Dale Tucker and Joyce Pearson. Their paintings were drafted during a session in May at which Campo provided a basic demonstration before all artists went into the chill and wet of a Virginia City May afternoon to paint what they could find and see. According to artistsnetwork.com, plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your stu- dio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” The Elling House Arts and Humanities Center was established in 2008 to continue the tradi- tion of the original owners of the Elling House, Mary Elling. Elling sought to provide education- 44th Annual Virginia City Art Show al, artistic, and entertainment programs to local audiences.

Stroll along the boardwalks and enjoy fine art of artists from all over Montana and the Pacific Northwest July 26 through 28, 2019. Artists will be on the boardwalk and in the Community Center Building on the corner of Idaho & Van Buren Streets on Friday from 10a .m.-6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saunter along the boardwalks and support the arts!

Ruby Valley Relay for Life happenings

Story and photos submitted by ROBIN BIEROTH

Ruby Valley Relay for Life has been busy this past year. They have orga- nized a bake sale, silent auction, BBQ, fun run, and sponsorships. Three stu- dents hosted a 5k walk and fundraised at some ballgames for a breast cancer awareness themed FCCLA project. They raised $1,200 for the Sheridan Relay for Life team and they received a Gold at Nationals for this project. We raised $1,550 in sponsorships this year. Something new this year was to submit names of survivors or honoring someone who passed away with cancer. These names were paint- ed on the windows of the old Jensen’s store. A $1 per name donation was made. Like usual, we did really well on the Silent Auction that was held in the lobby of the Opportunity Bank, raising a total of $5,516. The weather didn’t cooperate for the Fun Run or BBQ, so we were happy we did as well as we did. Twenty four walkers and runners showed up to support even with the poor weather. Left: Maria, Odessa, Stella and Mia Bieler; Ashley and Ben Durham; Robin Bieroth; Erin Rossiter and Linda Dixon get ready for the Relay for Life Fun Run in Sheri- dan on June 8th. The instal- lation into the Hall of Fame will not be official until 2022, but its importance is huge considering Salt and Pepper competed against horses from all over the world with less opportunities to train. At WPC, horses are judged on precision, speed and uniformity. There are courses similar to rodeos that are timed and horses are penalized for hitting obstacles. “You gotta’ do some figure eights and go through some serpentines and back up and spin on a dime and straddle some stuff to assimilate real life,” Clover described.
