The 1995-96 University of San Diego men's basketball program, under the direction of second year coach Brad Holland, returns four starters and eleven lettermen from last year's squad that finished 11-16 and fifth in the West Coast Conference. Although the team loses just one player, Coach Holland will have a tough time trying to replace him -guard Doug Harris. Harris, a two-time First Team All-West Coast Conference selection, was the lone Torero to start all 27 games while leading the team in scoring (17.2 ppg), field goals made (165), three pointers made (63), free throws made (72), steals (45) and minutes played (928). Coach Holland will be looking for his returning starters to all step up their games to ease the loss of Harris. Leading the way in '95-96 will be seniors Sean Flannery and David Fizdale, both tri-captains last year with Harris. Flannery, a 6-5 swingman from Tucson, Arizona, is the team's top returning scorer (14.0 ppg) and an Honorable Mention All-WCC pick. He led the league in percentage (90.0%) and canned 62 treys, one shy of Harris' school record. Going into his senior year, Sean has 707 career points and 115 career made three-pointers. He should become the school's 15th player to score 1,000+ career points and will have a serious shot at breaking Doug Harris' career record for threes made of 176. Senior David Fizdale, a 6- 2, 185 lb. guard from , will be one of the league's best. This past season he averaged 8.7 ppg, led the team in assists with 158 (5 .9 apg, 2nd in WCC), and finished second in steals with 44. Among USD Division I players only (1979-95), David currently stands fourth all-time in assists with 270 - he needs 139 this coming season to break Wayman Strickland's mark of 408 (the all-time USD record is 451, set by Stan Washington, 1971-74). The other two starters returning include junior center James Black (6-11, 260 lbs.) and sophomore forward Ryan Williams (6-6, 215 lbs.). Black, who started 14 games last season, is the projected starting center this coming season. He averaged 3.8 ppg and 3.0 rpg while getting just over 18 minutes of playing time a game. Williams, who earned his first start in game nine against Iowa State, was one of the best freshmen in the WCC. He finished the season making 59.1 %of his shots while averaging 7.3 ppg and 4.7 rpg. Other key returning contributors include: Brian Bruso (6-7,junior, F/C), who started 15 games, but was the first player off the bench down the stretch, finished with averages of 9.9 ppg and a team-leading 5.3 rpg; Andre Speech (6-8, sophomore, F), played in all 27 games and averaged 4.6 ppg; Rocco Raffo (6-9, senior, C), started seven of twenty games and sparked the team with his hustle; and Val Hill (6-4, senior, F), one of the team's more aggressive defensive specialists. Two returning sophomores that gained valuable experience in their rookie season include Nosa Obasohan (6-5, swingman) and Kareem Mutrie (5-11 , point-guard). Lamont Smith (6-2, freshman, guard), who sat out last season after corrective knee surgery, is expected to help with his defensive abilities and outside shooting. The Toreros two newcomers, Brian Miles (6-9, sophomore, F) and Brock Jacobsen (6-5, freshman, G), are both expected to see considerable action in 1995-96. Miles, who is coming off a two-year church mission, played his freshman year at Utah Valley State. Coming off the bench he averaged 7.4 ppg and proved he has range by canning 45.2% of his three-point attempts. Jacobsen comes to USD via Crescenta Valley High School (coach Holland's alma mater). Selected All-State (third team) by Cal-Hi Magazine, Brock averaged 27 .2 ppg while leading his team to a 25-2 mark (3rd in state). Brock's brother, Adam, is a starting guard at the University of the Pacific, USD's opponent on November 26th in Stockton. USD's schedule will be highlighted by its December 9th encounter with the University of Kansas at the San Diego Sports Arena. USD plays cross-town rival San Diego State at USD on December 2nd. The game will be televised live by Prime Sports West at 5:00 p.m. Other key nonconference home opponents include UC Santa Barbara (Dec. 6), UC Irvine (Dec. 21) and the University of Nevada (Dec. 23). The Toreros' nonconference road slate includes contests at Sacramento State (Nov. 24), Pacific (Nov. 26), Notre Dame (Dec. 28) and Cal State Northridge (Jan. 24). USD opens up WCC play on January 6th in San Diego against San Francisco. The WCC Tourna ment will again be at Santa Clara University beginning March 2nd with the winner getting the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. TORERO ROSTER Page 3

BRAD HOLLAND ~~~ 2nd Year

Brad Holland enters his second year at the helm of the University of San Diego men's basketball program. The 38-year-old Holland is USD's third head coach since the program turned Division I in 1979, and its tenth coach overall since the school's first season of competition in 1955-56. In his first year Brad guided the San Diego Toreros to an 11-16 overall record and a fifth place finish in the West Coast Conference with a 5-9 mark. The season was highlighted early on when the Toreros downed visiting Notre Dame, 90-76, on Dec. 3rd before 6,522 fans at the San Di ego Sports Arena. Coach Holland enters the 1995-96 season with a 3- year coaching record of 34-47. Stated USO Director of Athletics Tom Iannacone upon his ap pointment, "The University of San Diego is pleased and excited to an nounce Brad Holland as our new men's basketball coach. Brad possesses those personal qualities that are consistent with the values of USO. He understands the role of athletics within our university mission." Prior to USO Holland won rave reviews for the manner in which he revitalized the Cal State Fullerton men's basketball program. During the 1992-93 season, his first as a head coach, the Titans finished 15-12 and posted the school's first winning record in four years while going 10-8 in the . Along the way they beat every team in the conference except New Mexico State, capping the year with an exciting one-point home victory over nationally ranked UNLV. His 1993-94 team, which lost three players to season-ending injuries prior to the start of the season, finished 8-19 overall and eighth in Big West play. They did have some memorable victories - they won at Nevada and UC Santa Barbara's Thunderdome; they won for the third year in a row at UC Irvine; and they knocked off UNLV with a 84-75 victory at the Thomas and Mack Center. Prior to his appointment at Cal State Fullerton, Holland was an assistant coach on 's staff at UCLA from August, 1988 to March, 1992. He helped the Bruins return to national prominence while com piling a 93-35 record that took them to four NCAA tournaments. Success as a head coach is merely the latest positive mark Holland has made on Southern California basketball. He was a bas ketball and football star at Crescenta Valley High School. He was a four-year basketball letterman at UCLA and played with the Los An geles Lakers and two other National Basketball Association teams before retiring in 1982 due to a knee injury. He entered private business and also was a broadcaster for Prime Ticket from 1985 to 1988. Holland was the last player recruited by Coach and became a part of four Pac-10 championship teams at UCLA from 1976 to 1979, two under Coach and two under Coach . The Bruins went 102-1 7 during Hollands's playing career and he was honorable mention All-America and second-team Academic All-America as a senior. That year he averaged 1 7.5 points and 4.8 assists and had a .598 field goal per centage, the best ever by a Bruin guard. He graduated in 1979 from UCLA with a B.A. degree in Sociology. The Lakers drafted Holland in 1979, the 14th player taken in the first round, and went on to win the 1980 NBA championship. The rookie guard scored eight points in the decisive sixth game at . He finished his playing career in 1981-82 with Wash ington and Milwaukee. Holland and his wife, Leslie, have three children, Kristin and Lisa, 13-year-old twins, and Kyle, age 3. San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year-round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, can yons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development. As home of the largest naval air station on the west coast, the federal government ranks first in eco nomic importance to the city with the aerospace equipment industry second. Tourism closely follows as third. Business and pleasure coexist in harmony in San Diego. The climate, attractive setting and recre ational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City." According to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involve ment, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 75 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1, 158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums, two municipal golf courses, and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf, jet skiing and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams - the Chargers in football, the Padres in baseball, the Sockers in soccer, and the Wildcards in basketball (CBA). Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego - the sports capital of the U.S.A. UNIVERSITY PROFILE Page 17

THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE~~~~~~~~~~~ The basketball courts of the West Coast Conference run from the eastern pine forests of the Pacific Northwest to the crowded beaches of San Diego, California. Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, the University of Portland, Saint Mary's College, the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University make up the NCAA Division I league. All are private institutions with exceptional academic and athletic traditions, and have made up the WCC for the past fourteen years. The current alignment has remained unchanged since 1979. San Francisco has won 16 men's hoops titles followed by Pepperdine (10), Santa Clara (6), Loyola Marymount (4), Saint Mary's (3), San Diego (2) and Gonzaga (2). Basketball is what got the West Coast Conference its start as the California Basketball Association back in 1952. No one suspected at the time the number of legendary players who would battle on the courts of the league in the subsequent 43 years. Former WCC players sport NBA championship rings (, San Francisco), Olympic Gold Medals (, Gonzaga), and statues in the National Basketball Hall of Fame (, K.C. Jones, and Phil Woolpert, USF), Phil Smith, Dennis Johnson, Ri ck Adelman, Darwin Cook, , , , the late , and most recently, spent their formative years pounding the hardwoods of the Conference. Th e WCC is no longer merely a basketball league, as it offers a total of 11 championships for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis and soccer) and women (basketball, cross country, tennis, soccer, and volleyball). Last season, the WCC sent representatives to NCAA championships in every league-sponsored sport, and has annually advanced at least one team for a national championship semifinal since 1989. Last year USO was represented at the NCAA's by men's soccer and women's tennis, while volleyball advanced to the semi-finals of the NIVC. PITCHES, DIAMONDS, COURTS AND COURSES While basketball gets most of the attention, it's not the only WCC men's sport. In fact, the conference has gained national recognition as having one of the top baseball and soccer leagues in the country. Santa Clara tied for the national soccer crown in 1989; Portland has been to six NCAA soccer tournaments; and San Diego was the 1992 national runner-up, made it to the NCAA's Sweet 16 in 1990, the second round in 1993 and first round in 1994. USF has won the soccer national championship four times. In baseball, Pepperdine won the 1992 national baseball title, and has won ten of the last twelve WCC crowns. Countless players have gone on to professional baseball careers after playing collegiately in the WCC. In tennis, the University of San Diego captured the WCC crowns in 1989 and 1990 and Pepperdine has won the past five. USD's Jose Luis Noriega became USD's first four-time NCAA All-American, and participated in the NCAA's all four years he competed (1989-92). This is th e eleventh season of WCC women's sports, and the ninth with conference membership mirroring the men's league. Gonzaga, Portland and St. Mary's upgraded their programs to the Division I level just eight years ago. Gonzaga won the women's basketball title in their first Division I season. St. Mary's won it in 1989 and 1990, and Santa Clara took the title in 1991 . Santa Clara, Portland and San Francisco ended in a three-way tie in 1992. 1993 marked San Diego's first WCC crown and first year in the NCAA Tournament. Santa Clara won in 1994 while USF advanced in 1995. Portland has captured the cross country crown in each of the last eight years. Loyola Marymount won the volleyball crown in 1994. San Diego finished 24-6 under WCC Coach of the Year Sue Snyder in 1993 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time at the NCAA Division I level. Th e San Diego women's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times in the past seven years. 1995 marks the fourth year for women's soccer as a WCC sport. NATIONAL Current WCC members have won 14 NCAA team championships, most recently the 1992 baseball crown by Pepperdine. USF has seve n titles (four in soccer, two in basketball, one in tennis) followed by Pepperdine with four (three in volleyball and one in baseball), and Santa Clara (soccer) and Gonzaga (boxing) with one apiece. Pepperdine has three individual champions and Gonzaga has a trio of boxing winners. San Francisco has won individual championships in tennis and fencing while Loyola Marymount won an individual track title. San Diego picked up a pair of Division II team tennis crowns and Pepperdine won two track awards prior to joining th e WCC. Portland captured its first national title in 1986, in NAIA cross country. Saint Mary's also won the NAIA soccer championship that year. 1994-95 Final Basketball Standings 1994-95 All-Conference Team Doug Harris San Diego C School All WCC Gerald Brown Pepperdine G Santa Clara# 21-7 12-2 Cannaan Chatman Portland F Portland 21-8 10-4 Kyle Dixon Gonzaga G Saint Mary's 18-10 10-4 Brent Farris Saint Mary's F Gonzaga+ 21-9 7-7 Santa Clara G San Diego 11-16 5-9 Jumoke Horton Saint Mary's C San Francisco 1 0-19 4-10 *Steve Nash Santa Clara G Pepperdine 8-19 4-10 lme Oduok Loyola Marymount C Loyola Marymount 1 3-1 5 4-10 Curt Ranta Portland F # Won wee Regular Season *WCC Pl ayer of the Year + Won Tournament Dick Davey (San ta Clara) 'Coach of the Year' wee USO Honorable Mention: Sean Flannery F 1996 WCC TOURNAMENT Page 29 COMBINED EVENT CREATES 14-GAME HOOP FEST The tenth annual West Coast Conference basketball tournament tips off at Santa Clara University's Toso Pavilion on February 29th with the WCC's au tomatic bids to the men's and women's NCAA tournament at stake. For the second straight year, the WCC's basketball tournaments are combined into one five-day, 14-game festival of hoops. This is the fifth time the women will pick their NCAA entrant via a tournament but only the second time all eight schools will participate. First round action for the women and men begins with Session I at 12 noon with Session 2 following at 6:00 p .m. on their respective opening days. The second game of each doubleheader tips 30 minutes after the conclusion of the preceding game. A Message From President Hayes As the new president of the University of San Diego, this is my first Torero season. I am proud of the USO basketball team and pleased that the university supports the program in every way possible, including emphasis on scholarship assistance, academic excellence, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. Our student-athletes are winners on and off the court. They demonstrate the values that characterize a USO education - commitment, integrity, teamwork, discipline, and respect for the dignity of all human beings. These are qualities that will help them throughout their lives. I am looking forward to the coming season and hope that you will join me in sup porting our team. It's an exciting schedule and promises to be a great year.

Tom Iannacone is in his eighth year as the University of San Diego Director of Athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search. The 54-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first seven years. His accomplishments at USD include an internal reorganization of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of per sonnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug education, academic support, and a new university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was instrumental in USD gaining membership to the Pioneer Football League, which began play in 1993. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an impres sive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of intercollegiate ath letics. Prior to USD he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis in cluded the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hir- ing of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the Eastern Colle giate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development. Iannacone also served as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Committee. Now that USD football is competing at the I-AA level, he is a member of the I-AA Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee. He is also the new Chairman of the West Coast Conference Athletics Directors Committee. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assis tant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 19 75- 78, he acted as offen sive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983 Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstandin g contri butions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham, Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New I Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his colle giate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children : Tom Jr., Jennifer and Eric. All three are recent graduates of the Univer sity of San Diego. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF Page 32
