His death in that conflict meant that this was a career that lasted barely twenty years; however it comprised a large range of creative endeavours. Although all these facets of Whistler’s career are touched upon, the main focus is on his work in murals and the fields of advertising and commercial design. The thesis goes beyond the remit of a purely biographical stance and places Whistler’s career in context by looking at the contemporary art world in which he worked, and the private, commercial and public commissions he secured. In doing so, it aims to provide a more comprehensive account of Whistler’s achievement than has been afforded in any of the existing literature or biographies. This deeper examination of the artist’s practice has been made possible by considerable amounts of new factual information derived from the Whistler Archive and other archival sources. -

Lucien Broca was a Frenchman who came to London to work for Antoine Chatelin, and from 1876 to 1889 he was in partnership with Simon Kaufmann. From 1890 he appears under his own name in Shaftesbury Avenue, and in 1901 he was at Percy Street, calling himself an "Art Binder". He was recognised as a superb trade finisher, and Marianne Tidcombe has confirmed that he actually executed most of Sarah Prideaux's bindings from the mid-1890s. EASTERN UNIVERSITY POST-GRADUATION REPORT 2019 FIRST DESTINATION SURVEY : TRADITIONAL UNDERGRADUATE BACCALAUREATE COLLEGES Eastern University Center for Career Development | www.eastern.edu/careers 2 TRADITIONAL UNDERGRADUATE BACCALAUREATE COLLEGES: Class of 2019 First Destination Survey ABOUT THE SURVEY The first destination survey provides an overview regarding the status of Eastern University Traditional Undergraduate Baccalaureate (TUB) alumni within six to nine months of graduation. For the purposes of this survey, “Class of 2019” is defined as a TUB student who graduated in August 2018, December 2018, or May 2019. The Center for Career Development gathered statistics using the professional guidelines set forth by NACE (National Association for Colleges and Employers). The First Destination Survey, created by Handshake using NACE guidelines, was distributed electronically to TUB alumni. Data were also gathered via paper surveys at May 2019 graduation rehearsal. Faculty members were contacted via email in early 2020 about graduates whose status remained unknown. Additionally, information on non-responders was captured from updated professional profiles on social media si tes (primarily LinkedIn) as well as employer webpages. Through this extensive process, we obtained an 86% knowledge rate of the Class of 2019. “Knowledge rate”, as defined by NACE, is the “percent of graduates for which an institution has reasonable and verifiable information concerning the graduates’ post -graduation career activities.” Our intention is to provide a summary of first destination highlights, as well as a specific breakdown by TUB Colleges for the Class of 2019. The Incline Press, Winter 2004
INCLINE PRESS he Incline Press is proud to call itself a private press. Each of its books is made by hand as a deliberately designed craft object and the type faces, illustrations, book cloth and paper are all selected to complement the text. The press is run by Graham Moss and Kathy Whalen in a work- Tshop in the back streets of Oldham in the industrial north-west of England. In the 1980s Moss was a time-served history teacher with a professional interest in paper con- servation that slowly developed into a book-repair business. In 1990 he bought a small printing press to print labels for acid-free paper wrappers and spine labels, but he soon became inspired to print more than just labels. An Arab press, powered by foot and fed by hand, was the next step, and in 1993 Moss left teaching to pursue his publishing projects. He intended his first book to be Oliver Goldsmith’s The 1 Deserted Village, but in fact this came out second, fol- lowing a reprint of Enid Marx’s 1938 wood engrav- ings for Nursery Rhymes. Detours and distractions are equally a curse and a blessing for a private press The Incline Press prizes publisher – as Eric Gill said: “A private press prints solely what it chooses to print, whereas a public press independence and prints what its customers demand of it.” The press has gone from strength to strength since craftsmanship – and has those early days and has now published over 30 proved that you can print books with remarkable success. -

Abstract Alice Marina Strickland Three Officially Commissioned Women War Artists of the Second World War: Ethel Gabain, Evelyn Gibbs and Evelyn Dunbar. This thesis has been written with the intention of providing an account of the work of Ethel Gabain (1883-1950), Evelyn Gibbs (1905-1991) and Evelyn Dunbar (1906-1960). All three were commissioned as war artists during the Second World War by the War Artists Advisory Committee and are probably best known today for the work they performed as war artists, indeed, the major repository for their work is the Imperial War Museum.
