Western Washington State College occupies a graceful hillside site in Bellingham overlooking the city, Bellingham Bay and many of the San Juan Islands. With its gradual blend of the traditional and the experimental, the College reflects the majestic beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The College was founded in 1893 as a state normal school and was renamed Western Washington College of Education in 1937. The present name was authorized by the State Legislature in 1961, reflecting the growth of the College into a large, multi-pur pose institution. Presently, Western includes 24 academic departments, most of which offer both the bachelor's and master's degrees, and the 1969 Legislature also authorized the College to develop Ph.D. programs in education. More than 8,500 students representing nearly every state and many foreign countries and about 550 highly specialized faculty members-over 60 per cent of whom hold earned doctoral degrees-have come to Western from leading colleges and universities throughout the world_ The campus covers 180 acres and has 68 permanent buildings, including residence halls, some of which are now under construc tion. Additional facilities nearby include a marine biology labora tory on Lummi Island, the Shannon Point Marine Center near Anacortes and the nine-acre student-college property on Lake Whatcom. The latter facility, known as Lakewood, will soon be expanded greatly and wi 11 provide a shell house for the· crew squad, a roomy lodge, picnic and retreat facilities and space for the Institute for Freshwater Studies.
