Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in a re gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No ma er which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chas se us. In either case, we are s ll focused on exter- nal appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored posi on be- fore God. True, James cri cizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he cri cizes the making of dis nc ons, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our a en on to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gen le man in a region hos le to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
Debes Ver Mas Alla De Las Aparencias La frase “ves do de domingo” ha perdido gran parte de su significado en la sociedad actual. Algunos se lamentan de que la gente ya no se ponga elegante para asis r a la iglesia los domingos; otros consideran que es un síntoma saludable que nos vistamos tan informalmente cuando nos reunimos ante el Señor como en los demás lugares. Sin importar cuál sea nuestra opinión sobre este tema, San ago segura- mente nos reprendería. En ambos casos, seguimos centrándonos en las apariencias, creyendo que suponen una especie de posición privi- legiada ante Dios. Es cierto, San ago cri ca a la comunidad que fa- vorece a los ricos y bien ves dos mientras condena al ostracismo a los que están pobremente ves dos, pero cri ca aún más a quienes hacen dis nciones y toman decisiones en base a criterios que nada enen que ver con el Reino de Dios. Puede que San ago enfoque nuestra atención hacia el Reino de Dios que describe Isaías, en el cual la gente es curada y la erra se hace fér l para dar fruto. Jesús hoy se enfoca en este Reino de Dios cuando cura a un gen l en una región hos l a su fe judía, sin ten- er en cuenta el origen, la ves menta ni la condición social de este hombre, ni siquiera su habilidad para retribuirle la atención. Isaías, San ago y Jesús en el Evangelio según san Marcos nos llaman a ir más allá de las apariencias para averiguar dónde se debe hacer y se ha hecho la voluntad de Dios, así en la erra como en el cielo. Back to work we go! Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It’s a venerable Cath- olic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupa ons of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devo on, and alt- hough from me to me the Va can declares a saint to be pa- tron of this or that, the process is free-wheeling and just about uncontrollable. S ll, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would o en associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you’re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cuper no is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you’re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Va can has from me to me assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS pa ents, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that ma ers to us—na on, parish church, occupa on, illness—can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the “communion of saints” is to know that the es that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life’s struggles, we do not stand alone. En muchos países la noamericanos la Fiesta de la Santa Cruz se celebra el 3 de mayo, pero la Iglesia universal la celebra el 14 de sep embre. La fiesta del 14 de sep embre conmemora la consagración del santuario del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén. Este es el santuario más importante de la religión cris ana, pues en él se en- cuentran tanto el monte del Calvario donde falleció Jesús como el sepulcro del cual resucitó al tercer día. Sin estos dos aconteci- mientos no hubiese cris anismo. Nosotros los la nos tenemos muchas fiestas y muchos san- tuarios. Ninguna de éstas puede ser más importante que las que recuerdan la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Jesús. El clima del año litúrgico cris ano es el Triduo Pascual el cual termina en la celebración de la Pascua Florida de 50 días. En Puerto Rico se han celebrado tradicionalmente las fiestas de la cruz con una novena que termina en la fiesta de la Cruz (3 de mayo). Cada día de la novena se canta el rosario frente a un altar hecho para la cruz.
