Adelaide High School Not only for school but for life
1910-Melbourne. 1st exchange between the two schools. The Principal, Mr. Adey, 5 teachers and 30 boys from Adelaide High School went to Melbourne in September 1910 to contest Football (won by Melbourne) and Rifle Shooting (won by Melbourne); the teachers played a Tennis match. Rain dominated the visit. 1911-Adelaide. 1st visit by Melbourne to Adelaide. The Principal, Mr. Hocking, teachers and 25 boys visited Adelaide High School. Tennis was added (won by Adelaide), there was Football (Melbourne), no Rifle Shooting, but the Adelaide teachers won the Tennis. 1912-Melbourne. Melbourne won the Rifle Shooting, Football and Tennis. 1914-1915. No contests because of World War I. 1916-Melbourne. Visits resumed. Rowing included for the first time on the Henley Course of the Yarra River. Adelaide won the “Cup” for the first time, winning Rifle Shooting (by a point), Tennis, Rowing, with Melbourne winning Football. 1917-Adelaide. Adelaide won all the contests; Football, Rifle Shooting, Rowing and Tennis. (Alec McKenzie, Melbourne Sportsmaster becomes involved, the first of 40 years involvement in the Adelaide visits!) 1918-Melbourne. Adelaide won all contests. 1919- Serious Influenza Epidemic forces cancellation of visit. 1920-Adelaide. Mr. Adey, as Superintendent of Education, visits matches. Adelaide won Rifle Shooting, Melbourne won Football, Rowing and Tennis. 1921-Melbourne. A “draw”: Adelaide won Football and Tennis, Melbourne won Rifle Shooting and Rowing. 1923-Adelaide. Adelaide won Football, Melbourne won Rifle Shooting, Rowing and Tennis. 1924-Melbourne. Contest drawn. 1925-Adelaide. Adelaide won 3-1 - Melbourne won Rowing. 1926-Melbourne. Draw. 1927- Contests cancelled as MHS splits. This “caused dismay and keen regret”. 1950-Melbourne. Melbourne High School (a boys’ school) v Adelaide Boys’ High School. MHS Prefects present Cup for contests. Melbourne won Baseball, the Debate, Football, Rowing and Tennis, the Hockey was a draw. A VFL match on agenda, and visit to Frankquin the hypnotist. 1951-Adelaide. Mr. Dining, Principal welcomes MHS to Adelaide. Mr. Woodfull (Vice-Principal), leads Melbourne. Adelaide won Rowing, draw in Hockey, Melbourne won Baseball, Debate, Football, Tennis and Rifle Shooting. 1955-Adelaide. Melbourne boys discover Sigalas’. Melbourne had a narrow victory in the Debate. 1957-Adelaide. Ben Monday (MHS teacher/football coach) carried off the held after Melbourne won the football. 1958-Melbourne. Cross Country added to competition, and won by Adelaide. Melbourne won 5-3. The Prefects Cup 1960-Melbourne. Basketball added to competition, and won by Melbourne. Melbourne won 7-2. 1965-Adelaide. Adelaide won 6-3. 1967-Adelaide. Debating lapses, replaced by Soccer and won by Adelaide. Adelaide won 5-4. 1972-Melbourne. Debating re-introduced, to replace Rifle Shooting. Adelaide won 5 (Baseball, Basketball, Debating, Hockey. Soccer), Melbourne won 4 (Cross Country Football, Rowing, Tennis) 1973-Adelaide. Mr. W Bentley, Principal, Adelaide. Mr. Messner, Sportsmaster. Mr. L. Collins, Principal, Melbourne. Mr. Colin Green. Sportsmaster. Melbourne won. 6-3. 1975-Adelaide. Melbourne won 6-3. Basketball result states “Adelaide team all fouled off”. 1976-Melbourne. Mr. B. Messner, Adelaide Sportsmaster (tenor) sang “Girls Were Made to Love and Kiss” at Welcome Assembly. Melbourne won 6-3, but Cross Country decided on countback. 1977-Adelaide. Melbourne won 7-2, but Adelaide won Rowing by 5 lengths! 1981-Adelaide. Table Tennis added to competition. Won by Melbourne. 1982-Melbourne. Melbourne won all ten contests. 1988-Melbourne. Rugby added to competition - match drawn. Chess added, Melbourne won. 1990-Melbourne. Baseball dropped from competition. 1991-Adelaide. Adelaide won 6-5. 1st Adelaide win since 1972. 1993-Adelaide. Volleyball added to competition. 1995-Adelaide. Theatre Sports added to competition - won by Adelaide. Overall contest a draw 6-6. 1997-Adelaide. Adelaide won 6.5 - 75. First Adelaide win since 1991 1999-Adelaide. 50th year of consecutive contests (63rd total contest - 13 years pre-war; 89 years of competition). Fittingly the contest ended in a draw. 2001-Adelaide. Adelaide won 7 ½ – 4 ½. Only the 9th ever win by Adelaide and the 41 point win to Adelaide in the Football was their biggest ever winning margin. 2003-Adelaide. Adelaide won 6 ½ - 5 ½. Touch Football was added as an exhibition sport. 2004-Melbourne. Melbourne won convincingly 11 ½ - ½, winning the Soccer for the first time in many years. Lacrosse added to the competition. 2005-Adelaide. Centenary of Melbourne High School. Melbourne win 6 ½ - 5 ½ . 2007-Adelaide. AHS Theatre Sports team kidnap the MHS mascot at the Welcome Assembly. Melbourne won 6 ½ - 5 ½. 2008-Melbourne. Centenary of Adelaide High School. Lacrosse dropped from competition, Hockey added. 2010 – Melbourne. MHS won 9 ½ - 2 ½ . Athletics replaces cross country. AHS lose the football by 1 pt.
