How Shall We Name Our New Parish?

St. Pascal, St. Bartholomew and Our Lady of Victory Parishes will be united as one Parish on July 1, 2021. We have the opportunity to participate in choosing a new name for our new Parish. Please review the information about the naming options and prayerfully consider the name that you think would be best for our new parish. During the Masses on May 15th, 16th, 22nd and 23rd each adult parishioner will be able to indicate their top three preferences. Please place a 1 next to your top preference and 2 & 3 next to your second and third preferences. Leave others blank, please. Please place into collection basket, give to an usher, or drop at Parish Office by May 24th.

St. : St. Clare of Assisi was a lifelong friend and later spiritual protege of St. . Raised in a well to do family, Clare is said to have had a strong spirit, refusing to marry a man chosen by her father. Having escaped from her family at night, St. Clare was admitted by St. Francis into the religious life, establishing a branch of his order for women known today as the Poor Clares. When the Saracens invaded Italy, surrounding Assisi, St. Clare is said to have carried the Blessed Sacrament while walking atop the city walls. She died in the year 1253. Her feast is August 11.

St. Lazarus: Lazarus, together with his sisters Martha and Mary, was a close friend and supporter of Jesus during his ministry. We read his story in the Gospel of John (11:1-44). Jesus was deeply moved by the death of Lazarus. In this last of the signs of which St. John tells us before the Paschal mystery, Jesus teaches us that he is the Resurrection and the Life. St. Lazarus may have been martyred, possibly with his sisters, in a missionary venture in the south of France after the Pentecost event. He is considered the patron saint of the sick among the poor.

St. Angela of the Cross: Born in the 19th century in , Spain, Angela was the daughter of a working-class family. In her early years, she is said to have worked in a shoe repair shop. She made two attempts to enter religious life but was prevented by her poor health. St. Angela eventually founded the Sisters of the Company of the Cross and devoted her life to serving the abandoned ill and poor with no one to care for them. She was canonized in 2003 by Pope St. John Paul II in .

Our Lady of the Rosary: The title of Our Lady of the Rosary has its origins in 16th century, during the time of the threat of the Ottoman Empire. The victory of the disadvantaged Christian forces at the naval battle of Lepanto, was attributed to the miraculous intervention of the Blessed Mary and the appeal of to pray the Rosary. Originally, this commemoration was marked by the Feast Day of Our Lady of Victory, but later was changed to the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Rosary. The prayer of the rosary remains one of the most important Catholic devotions and attests to Mary’s powerful intercession on behalf of the people of God.

St. John Neumann: St. John Neumann was born in 1811 in Bohemia. At the age of 25 he immigrated to the United States where he was ordained and later joined the Redemptorist order, and became the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia. Gifted with outstanding organizing ability, Neumann drew into the city many teaching religious orders and soon established the first diocesan parochial school system in the United States. Well-known for his holiness and care of his people, John Neumann died in 1860 and later became the first American bishop to be canonized. As patron saint of Catholic education, he remains a powerful intercessor for Catholic children and youth.

St. Oscar Romero: St. Oscar Romero (August 15, 1917- March 24, 1980), Archbishop of San Salvador, was martyred in 1980 while celebrating Mass in a hospital chapel in the capital city of El Salvador. Initially a social and theological conservative, St. Oscar became an outspoken critic of his country's military government violation of human rights after the alleged murder of a priest friend by government forces. On the day of his martyrdom, St. Oscar gave a homily that called upon his country's soldier to obey God, not their superiors, to end the state sponsored terror of the people and to and protect their human rights. St. Oscar Romero was canonized by Pope Francis in 2018. His feast is the day of his martyrdom, March 24th. Page 4 Saint Pascal Church

Society of Saint Vincent De Paul Saint Pascal Conference

Jesus tells us that he is sending the Spirit to us. The Spirit is the Word speaking to us in a most profound way because he dwells with us and guides us to all truth. This Spirit is all we need, provided we allow the Spirit to speak through us and not turn God’s word into our word. Openness to the Spirit within is our guarantee that what we speak as disciples is spoken in Jesus’ name. This Pentecost commemoration isn’t simply recalling a past event but celebrating what God is doing with us now. In baptism each of us received the Spirit; that was our Pentecost. The Spirit dwells within us so we can be faithful and true disciples. The indwelling of the Spirit is a continual Pentecost!

WHY DO CATHOLICS CARE ABOUT IMMIGRATION REFORM? RESPECT LIFE “…As Catholics, we are called to welcome the stranger and recognize the human dignity of every person. The Church’s solidarity and service related to migrants and refugees stems from the belief that every human person is created in the image and likeness of God. In the Old Testament, God calls upon his people to care for the foreigner because of their own experience as foreigners: “So, you, too, must befriend the alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.” (Deut. 10:19) In his own life and work, Christ identified himself with newcomers and other marginalized persons in a special way: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35)”
