Spring 2018 p3 Welcome to L’Amarrage In this From theEditor edition: We all felt the effects of Storm Eleanor which swept in at the beginning of 2018 with a vengeance from the Western P 11 approaches, spilling sand and rubble over St Clement Aquaria revisited seawalls and forcing the closure of La Grande Route de la Cote. p4 Spring 2018 From the Connétable It seems remarkable that nearly 3½ years have passed since we last went the polls to elect Members to our States’ Assembly. The process will start in earnest with a meeting at the Town Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, April 10 to receive nominations for those who wish to be elected as one of our eight Senators.

In St Clement, there will be an Assembly at the Parish Hall the following evening, Wednesday, April 11th at 7pm, to receive nominations for the post of Connétable, followed by that for two Deputies. In the weeks that follow there will no doubt be several hustings meetings where we will be able to quiz the candidates, much door knocking by the aspiring States’ members, a conglomeration of posters around the island and a significant amount of paper in the form of manifestos posted through our letter boxes. I leave it to you to make your own judgments on selecting candidates, except to say that they really put in a lot of effort into their campaigns, and the election is important for all of our futures. So, please, may I implore you to make a special effort to cast your vote on Wednesday, May 16 and let St Clément at least has a turnout we can be proud of. If you are not sure if you have sent in your electoral registration form, please contact the parish hall to check that you are registered to vote. In my column in the previous edition of L’Amarrage, I mentioned that the twining arrangement with the Breton town of Cancale was being revitalised. Now, thanks to the sterling efforts of Bernadette Cooper, we are proposing to participate in some shared activities. So look out for details in the coming months. Following the outstanding success of the Battle of Flowers Association with ‘Aquaria’ last year, the team will be entering its 60th year of competition in the Life moments that event. Under its new Chairman, Graham Gibson, we’re promised something ‘special’ again in the parade. As always, the more people who can lend a hand, the greater its success. I was particularly pleased to see new faces involved in the project. I am delighted to report that the St Clément Parish in Bloom team, who did so are worth saving for well last year, has been selected to represent in the 2018 Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom UK finals. Following the visit last October, by the Maire of Cancale, Pierre-Yves Mahieu and Anne-Sophie Levillain, we decided to start the ball rolling by supporting a couple of joint events during 2018. The weekend of 19/20 May is Carnival weekend in Cancale, a well-attended local festival with many attractions. We are looking for people who would be willing to participate. This could include a friendly pétanque match on Friday 18 May. There will be an 'Inter-villes' games event on the Saturday which will be fun to watch. (If we have enough fit, energetic, team spirited participants from the parish, we might even be able to enter a team.) On Sunday 20 May there will be a procession of floats through the town celebrating the theme of the 'Circus'. We’ve already concentrated on a vital group of parish heroes in this edition, but there is a wider band of islanders who regularly start their day well before the rest of us peer from beneath our duvets, to ensure the things we take for granted are ready and available on daily demand.

One such, is parishioner David Nuth, one of the two captains on the daily Iris Freight service, which since last April, has been setting out in the early hours from Victoria Pier to ensure avid newspaper readers in our neighbouring Bailiwick can peruse their favourite columns along with their coffee and croissants. At a little after 2am, Dave and his crew receive some two tonnes of national dailies (double that at weekends) which are now printed overnight using the new technology at premises on the Longueville trading estate, and stow them securely aboard Chieftain V, a sturdy former oil industry service vessel, for passage to St Peter Port, 28 miles or two hours away. While a glance at the map might suggest a simple journey, it’s no leisurely early-morning cruise. The contract has penalties for every hour‘s delay, whatever the conditions. These can be extremely challenging - particularly around Corbiere – even on a relatively calm day and the crews have posted several images on local media of how ‘interesting’ the voyage can become. Nevertheless, Chieftain, with its North Sea pedigree and resilient crew, has achieved an outstanding record of reliability. Despite the force 9 gales and mountainous seas which have accompanied the string of winter storms that kept the Condor fleet, including the reliable conventional ferries in port and the prolonged periods when fog has blanketed the islands and grounded air travel, Chieftain has only missed five day’s sailing since operations began. The success of this unique service has brought interest from abroad. A TV crew from ‘Talahassa’ a long-running, prestigious natural history and life style documentary series on France3, recently braved some ‘lumpy’ conditions to record the epic journey. It provided a test of their stamina and the efficacy of French ‘mal de mer’ potions. They were able to chronicle both the rugged importance of this daily link and the camaraderie shared by the crew and those contributing to the operation. Apart from its vital paper round, Iris Freight also specialises in taking valuable or perishable last-minute consignments quickly between the islands – even the occasional early-bird passenger - so long as they’re prepared to be on deck before the larks dare to peer from their nests. It is a heart of oak, testing routine for both operational crews and supporting staff, but it has quickly become respected for its reliability, and for Dave, who formerly plied the local waters as a highly experienced fisherman and genial host of local marine excursions aboard Thesius II, it provides the opportunity to pit long-acquired skills to different circumstances every day of his working life.

p24 Spring 2018 Putting on the glitz Christmas came unexpectedly early to ‘God’s Own Parish’ in the form of an unexpected windfall from Santa States as a result of Members voting at the last moment to release the cash that had been set aside to pay rates on States properties in 2017.

As usual, preparations for the festive season started early. Before even the Advent calendar windows were thrown open, the Parish Hall staff and volunteer helpers ensured the vital ingredients were ready for a seamless celebration. With choice saplings selected, the teams set about spreading seasonal cheer about the Parish Hall, dressing the trees and applying the sparkle. The Community Support Group assembled to assist with distributing the generous Vouchers donated by Sir David Kirch and the Social Committee prepared for the Senior Citizens’ lunches at the L’Ambassadeur Hotel and the arrival of Sana Claus and his elves. While local school choirs practised their repertoire and the Rector took on the role of recruiting sergeant and casting director for the parish church nativity. First up was the Sports Club Christmas Fayre which provided an Aladdin’s cave of crafts, bric-a-brac, and Christmas novelties served up alongside tasty food in an atmosphere of joyo us yuletide anticipation. Despite the less than friendly weather, Sir David received a traditionally warm St Clement welcome when he dropped by to add his greetings to the lunch party, serenaded by Barry Roach and pupils from St Christopher’s, St Clement’s schools. Finally Santa collected gifts for his sleigh-ride delivery with the promise to be back next year.

Summer2013 St ClémentSpring Parish2018 p Magazine41 p15 Le Squez Youth Project By florrie copley Have you seen our new logo? Last year we challenged the young people to design a new logo. With help from Natalia and Steve from Intertrust and the very talented James from Midnight Creative, we couldn’t be happier with end result. Young people attended workshops, learnt about marketing, branding, PR and creative writing. They discussed what Le Squez meant to them, its history, the Parish and the future. With lots of ideas for designs down on paper, James created five different designs and the young people voted on their favourite.

A highlight for our year 7’s has definitely been going to De Mond Gymnastics Academy! I have never seen so much energy being burnt, enthusiasm and determination to learn and improve!! The young people had an amazing evening and we hope to make this a termly activity. Our sessions so far have focussed on what young people wish do this year during their session. They have shared lots of ideas for cooking, sport, trips out and arts and craft. No surprises that making slime is at the top of all their lists!! We have some big plans in the pipeline for this year. Talent shows, fundraising events, residentials, big art projects and entering teams into community challenges to name a few! The young people are also planning a big event for senior residents in the Le Squez area! I don’t want to give too much away but watch this space!! p44 Spring 2018 ChurchNews from Canon David Shaw St Clement’s Day Pope, champion of blacksmiths, fishermen stone-cutters and sick children, the life of our Parish patron saint is widely commemorated. According to the writings of the time, he served as bishop of Rome in the first century AD and was instrumental in converting many of the Emperor’s court to Christianity. However, he appears to have overdone things to the point that he was banished to the Crimea, where he went about establishing more church communities. All this activity did not please the authorities who finally chose to dispose of him and his ministry by tying him to a ships anchor and throwing him inti the sea. Though the Saints Day falls on 23rd November, parishioners had two chances : Ceremony at Parish churchyard to commemorate his memory on the closest Sunday, by first meeting at the Parish Above Church where the Dean re-consecrated the graves of local scout legend, Kenny Faucon, and Rev. Lee, who founded St Nicholas Church at Greve d’Azette, then by attending the annual St Clement’s Day lunch at the Ambassadeur Hotel. Kenya Calling A new St Clement flag now flies alongside the Kenyan national flag at Malindi. It is raised each morning by the St Clement School Scout pack wearing their very smart uniform funded by 2nd Greve d’Azette Scouts. The new flag replaces the old worn one which had a red anchor as the person making it didn’t have any yellow! The fees of around 150 of the 400 children are sponsored mainly by people in Jersey including many in St Clement. However, 120 children have been identified as being nutritionally deprived – permanently hungry – so hungry, they fail to develop properly and struggle to learn. . A super kitchen and dining hall was completed two years ago and if funds can be raised some or perhaps all of the children will be given lunch as well as the daily porridge. 25p a day doesn’t sound much but multiplied by 40 weeks it works out as £50 a child and £6000 a year which we do not have. If you feel you can help, please send donations payable to St Clement’s Church to The Rectory, La Rue du Presbytere, St Clement JE26RB. Right: Raising the Flag Eastertime We have established an alfresco tradition. Weather permitting, we will gather at 7.30am around the cross on the green opposite the Parish Hall by Le Hocq tower to celebrate Easter Day “Sunrise” communion followed by a picnic breakfast of hot cross buns and coffee. With high tide at 8am this year it will be a truly seaside service. All welcome – children and dogs included! In the days leading up to this there will be a Maundy Thursday communion as we remember the Last Supper at 6pm on the Thursday. The mood and style change totally for Good Friday beginning with a two hour craft and cooking workshop in the Caldwell Hall for all ages – even the smallest have fun pounding the dough for hot cross buns and adults do their best to make crosses for the Easter gardens Once the buns are cooked and eaten with Pam’s home-made jam, there is a short family service at noon in the church. Then from 2 – 3pm in St Nicholas there will be a more contemplative service. As well as the service by the sea on Easter Day there will be a 9am Traditional Holy Communion and Hymns at 9am in St Nicholas and a 10.30am Family Communion in St Clement.
