Foreword

I am very glad to know that the Publication Division of Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DES) has brought out District Statistical Hand Book-2018. This book contains key statistical data on various socio-economic aspects of the District and will help as a reference book for the Policy Planners, Administrators, Researchers and Academicians. The present issue has been enriched with inclusions like various health programmes, activities of the SHGs, programmes under ICDS and employment generated under MGNREGS in different blocks of the District.

Preface

The District Statistical Hand Book, Koraput’ 2018 is a step forward for evidence based planning with compilation of sub-district level information. It furnishes block-wise statistics on Area & Population, Agriculture, Co-operation, Forest, Fisheries, Live Stock & Animal Husbandry, Industry & Mining, Power, Transport & Communication, Education, Health and Family Welfare, Banking, Revenue, Police, Crime and Judiciary, Labour & Employment, Public Distribution, Local Bodies, Election, Women & Child Welfare Programme, Poverty Alleviation Programme, Disaster Statistics etc. Besides, the publication provides district wise information on selected indicators which helps to access the relative position of the district in the State.

This publication will be a handy guide to the line Departments at the district and State level for sectoral and decentralized planning. This will also carter to the district and block level data requirement for Non-Government Organizations working in the field.

5 SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE: KORAPUT

1. Introduction: Koraput district becoming a district of Odisha state on 1st April 1936. After reorganization of districts the Geographical area of the district is 8807 Sq kms. The district headquarters situated 2900 ft. above sea level. The district is bounded by district in North, Vishakapatnam district of in South, district and Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh in the east and district and of Chhatisgarh in the west. It lies between 82°5’ E to 83°23’ E longitude and between 18°13’ N to 19°10’ N latitude.

2. Area and Population: The district has an area of 8807 sq. kms and 13.80 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The rural and urban population is 1153478 and 226169 respectively. The level of urbanization stands 16.39% of the total district population as against the 3.23% in the State. The district accounts for 5.66 percent of the state territory and shares 3.29 percent of the state population. The density of population of the district is 157 per sq. kms as against 270 person per sq. km of the state. The district has 2042 villages (including 101 un-inhabited villages) covering 14 blocks, 14 Tahasils and 2 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 196540 (14.2%) and schedule tribe population 697583 (50.6%). The literacy percentage of the district is 49.2 as against 72.9 of the state. The languages spoken by the people of this district are Tribal, Oriya, Telugu, Hindi and English.

3. Climate: The climate condition of the district is generally warm with high humidity during April and May and cold during October to February. The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June. The Average annual rainfall of the district is 1794.0 m.m (during 2018) which is higher than the normal rainfall (1567.2 m.m).

4. Agriculture: During the year 2017-18, the net area sown was 183 thousand hectares against 4725 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 4359256 quintals, maize 105962 quintals, ragi 222776 quintals, Mung 3687 quintals, Biri 6430 quintals, Kulthi 9172 quintals, till 675 quintals, groundnuts 31109 quintals, mustard 598 quintals, potatoes 99871 quintals and sugarcane 1450454 quintals. During 2017-18, the total fertilizers used in district was about 15857 MT with a breakage of 9106 MT nitrogenous, 4233 MT Phosphatic and 2518 MT Pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 47.33 Kg. which is 19th position of the State.

5. Irrigation: During 2017-18, it is reported by Agriculture department that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi from all sources were 93908 thousand hectares and 61924 hectares respectively through major / medium / minor (Flow), lift irrigation projects and other sources.

6. Co-operation: The district has 20 agricultural Co-operative societies with a membership of 196021. The loan advances is to the tune of Rs. 22706.62 lakh and loan outstanding stood at Rs. 24276.53 lakhs as of 2017-18. The agricultural credit Co-operative societies are more or less evenly distributed across the 14 Blocks of the district. Besides there are 10 non- agricultural credit Co-operative Societies and 4 marketing Co-operative Societies in the district.

7. Forest: District of Koraput has abundant of Forest area that contributed 21.34% of the total geographical area of the district.

8. Veterinary Services: During 2017-18, Milk production is 58.35 thousand MT, production of eggs is 494.23 lakhs nos. and production of meat is 5.63 thousand MT in this district. During the year 2017-18, 24 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 135 nos. of livestock Aid centers, 137 nos. of Artificial insemination centers and 26 nos. V.A.S and Additional V.A.S were functioning in Koraput district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining: During the year 2017-18, 1771 nos. of micro small and medium enterpriser have been established with total capital investment of about Rs.7794.53 lakhs with 5378 nos. of Employment generated in Kopraput district.

10. Power: There are 1383 nos. of villages so far electrified as on 31.03.2018 which is covered 71.3 % to the total villages in the Kopraput district.

11. Transport & Communication: During 2017-18, 163.85 kms of state highways, 132.12 kms Major district roads, 590.05 kms of other district roads, 1575.87 kms of village roads, 5170.62 kms, of Inter village roads, 3626.81 kms of Intra village roads and 208.75 kms of forest roads are operating in the district.

12. Education: There were 1713 nos. of primary schools, 849 nos. of Up-primary schools, 314 nos. of secondary schools and 44 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2017-18. Besides, there is 6 nos. of engineering schools and 1 no. of engineering colleges in the district during year 2017-18 to impart technical education. The pupil- teacher ratio in the primary, upper primary, Secondary School stood at 26, 26 and 20 respectively.

13. Health: The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 2 no. DHH, 14 nos. CHC, 60 nos. PHC of the Allopathic medical institutions including 310 nos. of Sub Centre in the district during the year 2017-18. There were 18 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 18 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2017-18.

14. Banking: As on December 2018, there were 127 nos. of all banks having 5077.42 crores rupees deposit and 2621.10 crores rupees credit in the Kopraput district. The district has banking branches network of 127 out of which 0 (0%) were in the urban area, 61 (48.03%) in semi-urban area and 66 (51.97%) in rural areas. The total number of ATMs in the district stood at 148.

15. Collection of Land Revenue: The total collection of land revenue in the district for 2017- 18 was Rs. 500.09 lakh. The total collection of Tax in the district during 2017-18 was Rs. 390.77 Lakh.

16. Poverty Alleviation Programme: In the district total no. of Job card issued was 2.73 Lakh and total no. of person days generated was 53.53 lakh during the year 2017-18.

17. Disaster Scenario: In terms of Disaster activity the district is graded as slight zone for wind & cyclone, high risk zone for flood, very high risk zone for drought, moderate risk zone for earthquake & high risk zone for accident.


